Yocake

Yes, two stars. Here’s why:
The cupcakes (I purchased two) fell apart in my hands.
I suppose this would not have been a problem had I ordered an actual yocake. I just feel like I am already getting enough lovehandles with the cupcakes, getting froyo on top is just adding fuel to the fire. I am sitting down eating these cupcakes and they literally cannot hold themselves together. I ended up getting frosting (yuck… it actually tasted like the darn Betty Crocker frosting out the jar) all over my pretty blue dress. I probably should have just given the cupcake to the begging squirrel at the park. Yo cake really needs to get their game up as there are cupcake places all over the place, not to mention you are supposed to be competing with Georgetown… and for the price, $ 2.75/piece, I could have made a better batch at home.
I feel like this review is harsh, but it is based solely on the product that they are selling… the lady behind the counter was very nice. She explained the whole concept to me and was patient with my indecisiveness. I got the peanut butter chocolate ship, and some candy one that was supposed to be reminiscent of a snickers bar. I know you can do better yocake! Rent in Dupont aint cheap!
Things that probably don’t need to be mentioned–
I’ve never been to an establishment like this one. Froyo on top of cupcake.. The establishment is up some stairs and quite cute even for it being so small. There is a small, round bar table for patrons that feel they want to eat inside, but I doubt that they will.
BTW…When you check in via Unilocal,it offers you a free cupcake.

Stopped by on the way back to the office from Takeateasy. I wanted to use my check-​in offer and after perusing, got the vanilla cupcake (well, I had to since that was what was offered on the check in offer) and chocolate soft serve. I sampled almost every soft serve flavor and found them all to be extremely artificial tasting, much like FroZenYo, where I opt only to get tart from here on out.
I found the frosting to be also very artificial tasting… I don’t see a reason to come back. I’ll get my froyo at Pinkberry and my cupcake at Hello cupcake if I am back in the area again.

A family-​run chain in Rockville, MD, YoCake has expanded to DC with a location in Dupont Circle as of January 2013. This particular shop is small, so keep your eyes peeled when strolling. Although small, it is cute and is run very efficiently. They offer a broad range of cupcake flavors, frozen yogurt flavors, and yogurt toppings. I’ve had the opportunity to try the following cupcake flavors:
–Almond Pear: pear and almond bits in cake, topped with almond cream cheese frosting
–Coconut: coconut cake with coconut buttercream frosting
–Chocolate Mint: chocolate cake with mint buttercream frosting
–Pecan Hazelnut: pecan hazelnut cake with pecan hazelnut cream cheese frosting
–Red Velvet: red velvet cake with vanilla cream cheese frosting
–Lemon Lavender: lemon cake cake with lavendar buttercream frosting, drizzled with honey
–Blackberry Honey: blackberry (honey and blackberries baked in) cake with vanilla buttercream frosting
–Golden Carrot: carrot (walnuts baked in) cake with maple cream cheese frosting
–Banana Caramel Coconut: banana and caramel (coconut flakes baked in) cake with coconut buttercream frosting
–Strawberry Bliss: strawberry cake with strawberry buttercream frosting
Having tried Georgetown Cupcake, Alexandria Cupcake, Lavender Moon, Baked & Wired, and Whole Foods cupcakes, I found YoCake’s cake to be the moistest. The frosting is also not as dense and tooth-​achingly sweet like Georgetown Cupcake’s or Alexandria Cupcake’s, and that was much appreciated. I must say I am not an American frosting fan since I grew up with French-​influenced Vietnamese pastries and adore places like Song Que and Shilla for their not-​so-​sweet whipped cream-​like frosted cakes. With that said, I found YoCake’s frosting suitable to my palate while still maintaining American cupcake integrity. My favorite flavors are almond pear (also co-​workers’ favorite from survey), coconut, and mint chocolate. The pear bits in the almond pear cupcake are a pleasant surprise; the coconut cream cheese frosting and coconut flakes are a delight; and the cooling mint buttercream frosting balances the chocolate cake very well, like a Thin Mint in cake form.
The name «YoCake» is a portmanteau that is also their genius concept: frozen YOgurt on a cupCAKE. Yogurt flavor offerings include original tart, acai berry tart, cheesecake, cake batter, cookies and cream, strawberry, chocolate, and no sugar added vanilla; all low-​fat or non-​fat. My creation was original tart yogurt on an almond pear cupcake, topped with strawberries and blackberries. I can only describe this combination as amazing because the tart yogurt and berries offset the cupcake’s sweetness and, unfortunately, the entire thing can be eaten by one person in one sitting.

Frozen yogurt and cupcakes – what could possibly go wrong? Everything else aside, this was the first time in my life that I had crumbly mochi. There was absolutely no chew, no texture, just dry pieces of gelatinous flour that broke apart between my teeth. The frozen yogurt wasn’t bad per se, but it wasn’t very memorable and I was so disturbed by the stale tasting mochi that I was pretty much distracted from noticing much else.
The store itself is super cute, and the manager (?) friendly. And they have this interesting cupcake-​frozen yogurt concoction where froyo is piled on top of a cupcake of your choice. While I wouldn’t be conceptually opposed to trying it, I fear that my initial disappointment with my froyo experience may deter me from sucking up the extra calories.
Great concept – mediocre execution. If you’re looking for a cute concept, Yocake will not disappoint. But if you want fresh-​tasting frozen yogurt, there are certainly better options in the immediate vicinity.

If you have a major sweet tooth then this place is a must. You can create your own YOCAKE combo by combining a cupcake with frozen yogurt and to top it off throw on toppings such as nuts, candies, fresh fruits, etc.
I don’t have a «major» sweet tooth. I love to enjoy the frozen yogurt and cupcake separately. My current favorite cupcake is Strawberry Cheesecake… yummmmmm
My current favorite frozen yogurt flavor is original tart with a lot of fresh fruits as toppings.
Oh, they also have these amazing little bite size chocolate chip cookies and red velvet cookies. I can eat 5 of these little guys in one sitting, chug a glass of water/​milk, and eat one more. :)

Golden Carrot cupcake with walnut bits — there’s a carrot on it so ITS ALMOST LIKE IT’S HEALTHY?
Okay, probably not. But this shit was MOIST and decadent and ooooooh my god. That frosting. Now that’s what I call an indulgence. Seriously cannot go wrong with this little shop. Open fairly late so it can satisfy a late night sugar craving if you’re in the area. Great deals, lovely service, absolutely no place to sit and enjoy so gtfo and eat your cupcake on the sidewalk in front of, or on the steps of, bars and try not to make too many O faces.
