Schorr Lake Vineyards is my new favorite vineyard that is close to St. Louis. It is small and has that small town friendliness that one expects. We went on a lazy Sunday and had most of the place to ourselves. Saturdays are apparently much busier. It has lots of seating and tables for a smaller place but it is not crowded too tightly together. It has a nice 7-acre vineyard that also includes a number of rows of big, beautiful blackberries. It has a small shop with various wine-related gifts and some food items, but you are welcome to bring a picnic basket as well — which is always important to us. We’ve evolved into avoiding those wineries that no longer allow us to bring in our own cheese. After all, we are there for their wine, not their food. Which brings me to the most important aspect of this place. The red wines and the blackberry wines(including the port) are phenomenal! I love dry, velvety reds with deep flavors. My girlfriend loves sweet wines. Here we get them both. Seriously, this is probably the best Chambourcin I’ve ever had and one of the best Norton’s(Cynthiana) that I’ve had. My girlfriend is not a port drinker, but bought multiple bottles of the blackberry port and the blackberry wine to take home. All in all, a great place!
