Apna Bazar is one of my favorite places to shop for Indo-Pak cooking at home. The spice prices are way below what you’d pay at H-E-B or Kroger, so I always buy cumin, cloves and hot pepper here. There’s a very nice selection of rices and beans here, and there is a meat counter now where you can buy specialty meats like goat and mutton, things you don’t normally see in the big grocers. They also carry a few produce items that are hard to find in the big grocers. Incense is incredibly inexpensive here. Sometimes they have fresh baked naan, but I think they sell out of it quickly so get there early. They always have warm samosas to go for about a buck each. The snack food aisle here is insane, so much from which to choose. And if you’re lazy or just fail at Indian cooking, they have ample prepared Indian dishes you can microwave from the refrigerated section. I know H-E-B has started carrying a few Indo-Pak items in their Asian aisle, but it doesn’t compare to Apna Bazar at all. It’s worth the side trip.

how long you have to wait to get JUST5lbs chicken from a halal store… I was there in the halal store to buy just 5lbs chicken and the halal guy took my order and he asked me to wait. I waited outside in my car and checked back again in 25 minutes. this guy was still busy. so i waited again standing there. time went… 15 – 18 more minutes. halal guy was not paying attention to me. after a while, he went inside to pick more chicken and he came out with a bunch of big boxes of chicken. I was sure, this is not for me. I asked him, «Is this fo me?». he said, «No, You have to wait. I will get you chicken after this». Come on man. this is not fair. I canceled the order, «I can’t wait any more.» IS this FAIR??? Just for 5lbs of chicken, anybody should wait this long???

Last I visited was September 2011. I love this store. It’s the best place to buy spices in bulk. Why buy a tiny McCormick spice for $ 4 when you can get a huge bag of it for like $ 2. If you want to make Indian food, this is the best place to stock up on spices. I also like that they have Indian cosmetics in this store. Very inexpensive as well. The older woman at the register was so nice. I guess she’s the owner. She helped me with my purchase and chatted with me a bit. I will definitely be back!

This was the very first day that they’d been open, so take my review as provisional. They were still unpacking boxes onto the shelves and most of the merchandise hadn’t been priced yet. Still, the place was well lit and uncrowded. People were very friendly. It appears to be a family operated joint; the parents’ English was a bit sketchy but the son’s was fluent and he told me about the place. They stock only vegetarian items. They plan to have freshly prepared somosas and other hot snack /light fare it a few weeks. They’ll have a few chairs, but mainly for take out. This place is no relation to the same-named Apna Bazaar on the West side.
