Lizard mound park has one of the largest, most diverse groups of effigy mounds open to the public. Getting its name from its most interesting one– a huge lizard hundreds of feet long. The park is sacred ground and requires visitors to stay off the mounds. Home to 28 mounds out of the original 60, the park hosts a mile long tour of 26 of its mounds which are well preserved and easy to see. Unfortunately the emerald ash borer did a number on many of this parks trees, and it’s strange walking the trails seeing new so many stumps left behind. They recently renovated the park by building a interactive gazebo with a 3d map and a recorded speaker with information about wisconsins effigy mound builders and history of the park. They also replaced the trails and put up more signage. On our last visit they seemed to be in the process of resignage of each mound. A beautiful place to learn about the native Americans of our state and have a nice walk with your family. They do have porta Pottys available and you’ll want to check out the neighboring farm for tomato plants during summer. They have a self serve station and the plants are amazing.
