Between Us

Best Authenic Thai food around! A bakery turned into yummy Thai cuisine! Seriously so good! All of their ingredients are extremely fresh. They just added spring chicken rolls. Or chicken spring rolls. What I like best is they are bite size!

I hate to give low stars but this place was severely lacking. I used to go to Buttercake bakery all the time because it was really cute and I loved the location. Buttercake closed a year or so ago and I continued to come here a couple of times but it never exuded that cute bakery feel. Either way I didn’t think it was that bad until I went recently; it seemed worse than before. When I walked it had a very sticky sweet chemical smell, or an amplified scent of stale orange cream soda. I’ve smelled this before and usually I believe it’s some sort of industrial cleaning product that I’ve smelt in staircases or bathrooms, something high strength and probably not normally used around food.
There was no one there up front and I had to ring a bell that very faintly worked so I had to tap it a few times repeatedly instead of just once. It made me feel like an annoying person ringing a bell inpatient for service while I just wanted to get a coffee. There was a decent selection of macaroons however in the display case there were 2 shelves and the bottom shelf was completely empty. I don’t know if this is normal or they are closing down but it looked very barren and unappealing. I ordered a coffee and the cashier looked at me sort of weird like I was asking him for something out of the ordinary and said that they were out; if I wanted one he’d have to brew a fresh pot. Why would you be out of coffee at a coffee shop? I came in the middle of the afternoon so it’s not like I came there right before closing and they had just run out. That seemed very bizarre and he acted like he didn’t want to be bothered with brewing a new one so I got something else.
Behind the counter there was a shelf with many receipts, invoices, and 2 stacks of other paperwork that looked cluttered and inappropriate for a bakeshop floor where guests could see. This all would have been more fitting to be located in the back in the office.
Maybe this place is trying to morph into something else because I did see a sign saying try their noodles. Noodles and macaroons is a bizarre type of store, sort of like that store on the corner of Franklin and Highland that is a Donut/​Chinese food store. I hope they go one way or another because the way it is now it doesn’t work.
I don’t know I really wasn’t impressed. I almost gave 1 star because I know people on Unilocal can have high standards but I really do want to see this place thrive. It’s in a good location with parking, and they have a couple of tables outside to enjoy your coffee. I wouldn’t call it in a destination in itself but maybe appropriate to go to after going to Olé Hendrickson or for take home macaroons after dinner at one of the Sunset Plaza restaurants.

This is a cute little café in Sunset Plaza, right below Chin Chin. The entrance is from the parking lot. I had a smile on my face the whole time as I walk in, I also noticed myself mumbling a Sinatra song while waiting for my tea. I guess I was enjoying the laid back vibe here.
Adrian, the Badass behind the counter was cool. He was wearing a pink shirt that matched the pink counter he was standing behind. Then I noticed the wall behind me was all mirrors with a little tiny bar area with flower vases on it. It’s a great place for a Thai food takeout and an afternoon tea. They run out of pastry and macarons late in the afternoon, so try them early in the day.

This is a hidden but cute sweet shop located in the back of Sunset plaza. We wanted sweets but the sign said that they were closed. But the lady inside opened the door for us and let us in. Very nice. Thank you :)
Because it was already late, there weren’t many sweets left in the show case, but I picked Fruit Tart and Pistachio macaron. The lady told us that she was the owner of the place and they also started serving Thai food there. The lady showed me the Thai menu and it looked great. That’s something I would love to try next time.
I was happy and looking forward to tasting the sweet, but when I opened the bag, there was no macaron. Noooo! Where is my Pistachio macaron? The lady probably forgot to put it in the bag, and this is a big deal to me… My pistachio macaron…
It was already late and I didn’t want to go back there to pursue my missing macaron. But I couldn’t help but smile when I ate the Tart. Mmmm so yummy! I would’ve given them 5 stars if I had the macaron in my bag. One macaron is equivalent to one star. I am giving them 4 stars at this time.

These folks make incredible Thai food! Who knew?!
They have become my go-​to for incredible authentic Thai.
Definitely get the chan poo noodles. They have a kick and are filled with bright green and red peppers, crab meat and egg with a homemade sauce.
Their tom yum soup is some of the best I’ve had. Order a large, you won’t regret it. It has a depth that most tom yum soups lack.
Garlic shrimp had an excellent sauce with garlic and bok choy but the shrimp were the tiny frozen kind. I’d prefer it if they used larger shrimp.
They gave me two macaroons, which was so nice. A chocolate and a blueberry. Great texture and flavor. This is my go-​to spot for Thai now!

Love this place!!! They make really good pastries. Some of my favorites are the ham & cheese croissant & macaroon. Im even more happy that they serve Thai food now. I live in Laurel Canyon so it’s very convenient for me and also they do deliver food. 5 starts for this place. Love it!!!

Being a new business, I would think that service should be one of the most important things to focus on, as that’s what people will remember and also what may keep people coming back. However, the service here definitely needs some major improvement.
I purchased a Living Social deal to use here, and yes I should have used it sooner, but if it says that it doesn’t expire till a certain date then that means I can use it on the very last day if I want to.
And that is what I planned to do, but when I called Between Us to confirm the store hour that afternoon, after no one picked up despite multiple calls that morning or the afternoon before, the man who picked up the phone told me that they had decided to close a few hours early because they had already run out of pastries. I explained that I had a deal that would expire that day that I planned to use and asked if they would possibly be able to honor it if I came in tomorrow, and the man rudely told me that they wouldn’t be able to honor it and that if I had wanted to complain or ask for a refund (which by the way I did not even mention), I would have to take it up with Living Social. He went on to tell me, «If we’re out of pastry then we’re out. We can close early if we decide to.»
I probably would have come here eventually to just use the face value of the deal since I’ve been wanting to try the macarons here, but after this phone call, I felt that Between Us did not deserve my business at all. (So I did exactly what he had suggested for me to do — I emailed Living Social.)

I really wanted to love (I always use that word when associated with any bakery or sweet food items) this place more, and while there were some definite pluses, I think our coming here a few days AFTER the big Valentines push AND over a holiday weekend, well, that was just dumb on our part. Their display cases were quite empty, and they didn’t even have the tropezienne that Brittany B and a couple of others raved about, which I was so wanting to try. Boo-​hoo. They had a fair amount of macarons, 2 croissants, and 3 tarts. I bought zero croissants, but I did buy their macarons and the tarts… I ended up only trying 5 flavors of the macarons (gave the rest away), and I shared the tarts with several others but at least got to taste them. As for the macarons, they were quite fresh and the perfect texture, but I have to say, I didn’t know what flavors I was eating. I forgot what they were by the time I got home, and with macarons from other bakers, I have often determined the flavors on my own… because they are that evident. Not from here… at least, not when we bought them. As for the tarts, again, the texture and freshness were spot on and quite reliable, but they were also light on flavor. Now that I’m thinking about it, perhaps, this patisserie uses less sugar, which, while it controls the waistline from expanding faster, it also reduces the flavor factor, too. I could be wrong, but something was definitely missing. I’m just too caught up in what kind of flavor is in food… I need it to hit harder. I was also disappointed because I wanted to have more things to choose from, but I think that was simply my bad timing.
I loved how the shop is neatly tucked in the back where there was lots of parking… and FREE parking at that on the otherwise crazy busy Sunset Blvd.
I’d give this place another try, but only if they have more things to choose from. I really don’t like seeing empty display cases… but I do understand why.

Delicious macarons at a reasonable price! On the lower level of Sunset Plaza (southside). My favorite was the hazelnut but they were all lovely.

The pastries are excellent. The macarrons are legitimate. The ONLY reason I rated it at 3 stars was the service. It was TERRIBLE. The French gentleman who eventually came out was great, but the guy who was manning the front counter had such a nasty «I don’t want to be here» attitude, I almost told the boss. I didn’t want to get the guy in trouble, but geez, what a turn off. If the French gentleman, probably the boss, had not come out, we would have probably have left without getting anything. So: great pastries, the counter guy has to go.

Excellent service and yummy macaroons

Ok, that tarte tropezienne is the best thing I have ever tasted. Thanks to another reviewer for that tip! The macarons were delicious. The rose was pretty darn delicious and authentic. The sandwiches and wraps are made fresh everyday and are pretty darn good too. This is my new favorite spot. Go to H&M next door and this place — its the perfect way to cheer a girl up!

I love this little place! It’s so cute, I never have to wait in line, and their sandwiches and their desserts are super delicious! Free parking at Sunset Plaza, and their prices are very inexpensive!

Always on the lookout for a new bakery and was delighted by the warm and clean atmosphere. The pistachio and white chocolate sponge was so delicate and not too sweet. Do try it out. You won’t be disappointed.

I kept seeing this place everytime I went to Sunset Plaza and I finally stopped in just to check it out. There was a beautiful tray of fresh baked red velvet cupcakes waiting for me… gimme one of those please…2 actually (1 for a friend… really!). JJ the darling lady who I’ve seen since that day*, did that… packed and wrapped up nicely in little containers.
After I had that cupcake, I have been back 3 times in a week and a half*…finding excuses to stop in after my workout at Equinox (I know… I know…) I have had another cupcake– just as good as the first… and I’ve had 2 almond croissants– one without chocolate and one with– both were heaven. I had never had a macaroon before– these were my first and they were amazing! I highly recommend the pistachio, rose and bubblegum as weird as that sounds… they were amazing…
You just gotta try this place– It’s really divine… and that JJ is a doll!

I came here on a whim after having lunch at Le Clafutis and I purchased some macaroons and they were amazing!
