I have almost completed the full Guitar Craft Program at the Musicians Institute. I’m currently in the Acoustic program which is the final quarter of Guitar Craft Academy and by far the most difficult. It is an advanced class, the prerequisites are the passing of the Guitar Craft Academy’s Electric Guitar program. The program was originally founded by John Carruthers, a prominent, Master Luthier in the field today. This is an incredible course that gives you the tools to be successful in the Guitar Building industry. You gain skills that you cannot be taught by just anyone. The Instructors are all current guitar designers and builders for various companies, from the Fender Custom Shop to Schecter all the way to their own custom guitar companies. They are an endless bank of knowledge and common sensical know-how when it comes to guitar building. The course is structured very well, and your abilities and your craftsmanship is tested everyday. When I say you build a guitar from the ground up I mean it. the only thing you do not build is the hardware, i.e. the tuners, the bridge, etc. You construct your own pickups, so do the research on what you would like in your guitar before you go! Other than that, you are provided with a tool box full of all the basic tools you need to get started in the repair and setup part of Lutherie. They are not cheap tools either. If you have a true passion for music and working with your hands and showing true craftsmanship then this is perfect course to do just that! The skills you learn here are irreplaceable! You will not regret doing it I guarantee it! The tuition cost is the same as the Performance Programs at MI’s main campus. The Guitar Craft Academy is Located on the Southeast Corner of La Brea and Santa Monica, in Hollywood, behind the AVON Rent-a-Car. If you want to tour the facility you must contact the school, through an Admissions Representative who will schedule a tour date and time. You will not be granted access at the door of the academy.
