Out of the Closet Thrift Store

Staff was friendly and I didn’t feel like any of them were rude or anything. I love thrift shopping and I got some amazing used cowboy boots for around 17 dollars because of a sale they had going on.
Whenever I’m in town, I love to stop by here and check out any bargains.

I cannot remember a time when I’ve been so compelled to give 0 stars and a negative review. If just one of the sales people in this Santa Monica blvd. West Hollywood location had some redeeming quality I would be sure to mention it. Alas the store is filthy on both sides, furniture and small hardgoods as well as clothing. I am used to thrift and flea market shopping so it is certainly not unusual and I could have also overlooked the lack of cleanliness. It was the end of the day and perhaps they had been very busy? It quickly became apparent after having struggled with an armful of clothing and basically waddling toward the dressing room while being watched with a glare that the employees are just plain lazy, unhelpful and ultimately unkind. I was never greeted. Not one of the 3 employees smiled or said a simple hello.
I selected my garments after trying everything on. I neatly replaced all of the unwanted merchandise on hangers and left them in the dressing room with the door open. They do not provide a go back rack at this location and I had 2 jackets, jeans and 2 dresses I decided against. Roughly 5 items and 4 hangers for the 4 pairs of pants I decided to purchase. I proceeded to the checkout laying my items on the side counter while the girl cashier was helping another customer. Clearly a regular and she couldn’t have been more animated and helpful with this man. I waited by looking in the case. When the girl was finished she disappeared into the back of the store nowhere to be seen. After a few minutes I said I’m ready to checkout. Both guys working had also disappeared out the front door. So bizarre!
While I was being rung up one of the guys came back from outside, went directly to the fitting room and grabbed the items I’d neatly hung up. Then he said something to me while walking up to the cash register. It was sort of mumbled so I said excuse me? He said, and I quote, «you need to clean up your mess». I was both confused and humiliated to be spoken to like this. Especially because the store does not provide any printed directions for how to «clean up my mess» and this is just absolutely not the way someone working in customer service should approach a paying customer. Even had I bought nothing (and believe me I wished I hadn’t) this is inappropriate treatment.
I hate to make this about race, but it occurred to me after leaving the store, that I was indeed the minority at Out of the Closet in Weho today. That said I have never had very good treatment in this location or for that matter many others. I have donated more often to Out of the Closet in the past, but now feel strongly that despite my support for Aids research and care I cannot support this location. I will take my business to Goodwill, and Jewish Coucil thrift stores until Out of the Closet can clean up their act!

I enjoy donating here because they help AIDS Research, HIV Testing, Patient Medication, and many other things that help the LGBT community. They also will do large pickups of items if you are moving and just want to get rid of something that has some value and would like to donate.

We were trying to kill some time before going to Connie and Ted’s, so we happened upon this store. Upon entering, the staff was welcoming and friendly.
There are many, many racks of all sorts of gently used clothing for reasonable prices. Everything is clean and very organized. There is a bit of everything here, from accessories to furniture. If you are looking for something in good condition but don’t want to pay full price, this may be the place for you.

This location seems pretty good for furniture, but let’s be real, I can’t walk by a thrift shop without stopping by to check out their bookshelves.
I can’t remember the last time I saw so many shelves at a thrift shop — the entire wall on both sides are completely filled. I love book hunting because I feel like they tell you so much about the neighbourhood. Do you want books about «What I Wish I Knew When I Was 20» and «What You’re Really Meant to Do»? Are you a gay couple planning a wedding or learning how to support a partner living with AIDS or trying to figure out what to do after learning your son is gay? Do you want to own the entire Harry Potter series in hardcover?
This is a pretty great place to get ahold of popular books both slightly more literary (Garcia Marquez, Margaret Atwood, Jonathan Lethem) and — well, if you ever wanted a collection of Candace Bushnell (of Sex & the City fame), this is a good place to start. Paperbacks are only $ 1.

Do they think they are Bloomingdale’s when they price things?

I’ve been donating to them for several years. The cause is wonderful and the staff is very helpful with collecting the donations. They are so much more pleasant than the local goodwill (Michigan and Pico) who are surly and lazy.

My favorite location of this chain. We just found an absolutely beautiful dining room table and chairs in near perfect condition for $ 150!
This location is great for furniture — in fact I think it’s the best location of the chain (at least the ones I’ve been to) for furniture. It’s also good for handbags — you’ll find an occasional gem if you search.
There is parking in the back. A really great place where you can find some fabulous deals.

My husband and I came here looking for Burning Man clothes — figured it might have some fun stuff being located in West Hollywood. Store is smaller than the thrift stores I normally go to. Found a faux fur vest ($ 25) and a Juicy Couture faux fur jacket ($ 45 — found it for sale online new for $ 398). So good deals for what I needed. But in general I found prices to be high — it’s the most expensive thrift shop I’ve ever been to. For example, used mens cowboy boots price at $ 60 and womens t-​dresses were $ 20-​$ 40+. I understand that the store is raising money for AIDs but the steep prices don’t really fit the «thrift» title.

This is my go-​to store to bargain hunt, browse for the interesting and unusual and easy donate/​drop-​off convenience. Whether hit or miss, best to do your own digging than relying on customer service… something you will pay for elsewhere. Go with an open mind and open pocket book for bargains and you’ll have fun.

I just cannot imagine a weekend without checking this place out! There is always a ‘treasure’ to be found! Many of my books, DVDs and LPs, as well as my large screen TV and most of my furniture come from Out of the Closet! Knowing that they give all their benefits to a foundation which is helping patients with AIDS is just AWESOME! From the bottom of my heart, thank you, guys!

Horrible customer service !
Do not even bother to call to see if an item is still there. I called and the woman (later identified as a skinny blond in her 30’s who did not even say hello or looked at me when she passed me by later… read on :) refused to check on an item. SHe just said she can not check for me. The store is tiny !!!
Had to drive from Sherman Oaks all the way because of the lack of her customer service, just to be told by an evenly annoyed, ignorant faced guy at the front desk, that it was sold 30 min ago !!!
Try calling Habitat for Humanity in Chatsworth. they go out of their way to make you feel appreciated for shopping in their store. They go measure furniture for you and hold it for days.
Done with this place !

There is not much I can say about this place. I’ve been here twice and I don’t think I’ll be back.
I’m a big thrift shopper and Out of the Closet would’ve been a nice place to shop, but the prices are just ridiculous and there wasn’t much when I went there twice… That is all.

A great thrift shop with tons of quality clothes that are in great shape and most importantly, cheap! I have always been a fan of thrift stores but after visiting out of the closet last year it’s been by my go-​to shop.
All types of clothes for both sexes, pants, shorts, shoes, shirts– long and short, jackets, sweaters, hats, etc. etc.
Every style as well, not just hipster or mainstream. Anyone can sell their clothes back here making for a very diverse selection of clothing.

This is tinier on the inside than I had realized.
The guys who work the counter? Very, very cute and unassuming.
I like that I spent about two minutes to walk in, find several things, pay for my items, and then walk out. It’s also convenient that there’s a bus stop/​bench right outside.
I’ll have to go back soon.

3 stars because for a thrift store, the prices were sucky.
Considering it’s in Hollywood though, you might think it’s worth it.
Left with nothing.

To be frank, the only differentiating factor between this and any other thrift store in L.A. is its location. By this I mean that you’ll find all sorts of decent quality, surprisingly cute things to take home for next to no money. To the noob it might not be obvious that clothing and everything-​but-​clothing are housed in separate but adjacent stores.
There are always killer deals to be had on the housewares side. Furniture especially turns over really quickly, so if you’re looking for a particular piece, just come in every two or three days until your dream headboard appears. Staff are ALWAYS flexible on prices so long as you’re not an ass about it.
Most importantly, when entering from the back, breathe through your nose. Between the dumpsters on the right and puke/​piss from The Old Coast bar on the left, you’re in for a scent sensation you’d just as soon skip.
