This place was pretty good, the guy, who I am assuming was the owner was extremely nice and didn’t rush me on my order. The girls all looked unhappy though. The restaurant its self has a weird layout but keeps the kitchen away from the earring space. Thoroughly enjoyed my BBQ sandwich and sides, the hush puppy’s were great! I’d go back if we lived closer!

Not much to write about here. Clean establishment and friendly staff but the food is just not tasty. Cafeteria style dining. Pulled pork was bland. Beans tasted like they were Bush’s and straight out of the can. There were only two barbecue sauces available and both were underwhelming. The best thing here is the cole slaw and it was very good. I won’t be back as there are other options available that taste better.

They should call this place«Smoky Mountain Fried Chicken» because their chicken is great but their bbq sucks! When I say the chicken is good, I mean it is really good. I dropped a tiny piece on the floor and it made me a little bit sad. Their pies are all commercially made and not worth the calories. Their banana pudding is not good… instead of using vanilla pudding they use the fake banana flavored stuff. If you just want a good piece of fried chicken then this is the place. If you’re hoping for a memorable meal then find another spot. You’d be better off going down the road to Shatley Springs.

If you’re looking for a local fried chicken, fish or bbq, this is the place to go! Their food is freshly prepared and simply fantastic. Be aware of the dinner rush because you have to stand in line to order your food.

The BBQ plate with hush puppies at this restaurant is absolutely delicious. It is by far the best BBQ I’ve ever had. There was very nice service there, the food was fantastic, and I would highly recommend this restaurant for people who crave BBQ.

First real southern bbq experience… I’m from New Jersey and i reeked of it when I got to the counter. A quick smile and giggle from the girls about to serve me have me all the initiative to impress them with my order. I read over the menu for all of 15 seconds then tried to rattle something off like I’ve been there before… Pork sandwich with slaw and two sides. I have the appetite of a type 2 diabetic, I want it cheesy and sweet. My choices made that clear; Macnchz, and sweet-Tato casserole. I figured the entrée was meant to be ate last so I decided to dig in to the sides. Each were pretty damn good, the casserole had a ton of walnut and brown sugar and wasn’t short on butter, all blending to a great sweet yet savory feeling… Something that reminds me of thanksgiving dinner. The macaroni and cheese was a good mix of cheese and noodle. Using rotini to grab the balanced cheese sauce. Now the main event. This pulled pork Sammie that entertained the pallete like no other. Vinegar slaw cutting through the seasoned swine adding that extra umami feeling. Progressing through the sandwich trying different sauces on each bite was just the way to help me fly through this sandwich only wanting another one. And I washed it all down with some cheerwine. Something magical in that soda syrup… Thanks to the Vannoys

I have tried BBQ all over western NC… It needs to also be noted I am from the eastern end of the state and I love vinegar. That being said, my experience today was very pleasant with quick friendly service. The food was hot and the tea was sweet. Now for the food. Bbq was juicy and very flavorful. There are two sauces for your sampling; a sweet vinegar sauce and a red tomato based sauce. The vinegar was flavorful though I would have appreciated a bit more heat… A more than adequate representative of eastern NC. The red sauce was sweet and smoky with several layers of subtle flavors my palette is not sophisticated enough to identify. Fried chicken was off the chain and sides were good. Though the Brunswick stew needed a little less sweet. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone asking. Hands down my best western NCBBQ experience.

Steer clear of the pulled pork! Contrary to the name of the restaurant, the barbecue is one of the worst items on the menu. Particularly if you are a fan of eastern North Carolina barbecue, you will find it overly sweet with a poor spice profile. Fortunately, there are plenty of tasty things other than the barbecue. The hushpuppies are hand made and perfectly fried and the battered fried fish is excellent as well. Ultimately though, there are much better options in West Jefferson such as The Hotel Tavern or Casa Garcia.

We eat here every time we are in town. My wife and I both order the small bbq plate and it is more than enough food for us, especially for lunch. There are many bbq places around our area back home and we think this ranks among the best we have ever had.

Good old fashioned food. This was delicious! I would’ve come back every day we were here. And the owner was super nice. Sweet potato fries were the best I have ever had. Everything else was delicious too. Yummy bbq and Mac and cheese!

Stopped into Smoky Mountain Barbecue on a Saturday for lunch with a big group(15 of us). I was worried about all of us finding space to eat but was overjoyed to see 2 long tables to the right of the door that sat 15. It was fate! We got in line at the counter and looked over the menu. I ended up going with the large BBQ plate with mac and cheese and sweet potato fries. By the time I got to the end of the service line most of my food was waiting for me(the sweet potato fries were brought out to me a bit later). The soda machine had RC cola on tap.. . ONTAP!!! BBQ was tender and moist. Of the two sauces available, I preferred the thicker one and even slathered it on top of my hush puppies and dipped my fries in it.. . yea.. . it was real good. The mac and cheese hit the spot. Cheesy and creamy. The price was extremely reasonable. Service was quick but friendly. The décor of the place is just as you’d expect. Lots of North Carolina nostalgia and pigs everywhere. I look forward to returning to SMB.

I was in town on business about a month ago, and searched Unilocal for some local fare places to try. I’m glad I discovered this place! I had been craving BBQ, and this place was nice, quaint, and a pleasant alternative to the area fast food. The service is cafeteria style, which you wouldn’t expect at a place like this, but the staff are extraordinarily friendly. I had the BBQ pulled chicken plate, and the portions were generous and the sauce was sweet. I wouldn’t say it was the best BBQ I’ve ever had, but I don’t think anyone would leave here disappointed. I enjoyed sitting in the back room and taking in the ambiance of the local Civitan’s meeting room and enjoying the taxidermy on display. ;). I would love to visit again and try their BBQ pork. Desserts looked yummy too. I’m glad also that I came for an early lunch, as I noticed it tended to fill up quickly as the noon hour set in. One weird thing. The only diet drink they serve is Diet Dr. Pepper. I thought that odd. Still, my experience here was great.

I came for the pork, which I thought was only OK. It was a little dry, and really needed their tangy sauce to wake it up. However, the sides were great, and the fried chicken was a real surprise — juicy and well seasoned! I’d definitely go back, but probably just order the country ham(from A B Vannoy Hams) and friend chicken instead of the pork.

After reading rave reviews of this place, which I have passed by on many visits to West Jefferson, I decided to give it a try. The reviews are right and it’s still excellent. It is now the standard by which BBQ should be judged! Absolutely the best I have had. Plus all the sides are delicious, especially the green beans, the mac&cheese, a and the baked beans. Large, perfectly cooked hush puppies too. Fried chicken is very good and the pieces are huge. Go early because folks really crowd into this place. It is cafeteria style ordering and self serve drinks, with no frills but you go for the food, not the atmosphere.

This place serves North Carolina style barbecue, fried chicken etc. North Carolina style barbecue is just meat, usually smoked in a barbecue but without any sauce. How it works: You order at a window, pick up at another window and take your tray of yummy food to the condiment table, dispense yor own drinks and sit down at a table or booth. If the food is not ready by the time you get to the second window, they give you a number to display on your table and your food is delivered to the table. I did not like the hush puppies as a matter of personal taste although other people seemed to enjoy them.

This place is THE best barbecue I’ve had in my life. We come here at least twice every time we’re in town and it always feels so good to chow down on real down-home southern cooking. The pulled pork is one of the best options there! I like it in a sandwich w/pinto beans and mashed potatoes mmm. The hush puppies they serve are my absolute favorite in the world! The chicken, ham and beef are all very good. Everything is hand pulled so there are never any bad pieces of meat or fat mixed in. The quality is really great! And, If you like fried chicken then you will be surely pleased ;) The people who work there are always genuinely sweet and the owner is a really nice guy as well; he often comes out to greet costumers and see how everything is.
