Way up north, most retail establishments are all about helping people get by. Plain and businesslike, most stores offer service and products and not a lot of else. Most stores, that is. Not the Country Cobbler, my favorite leather goods retailer north of the Massachusetts border. Shelves and racks are practically overflowing with a wide variety of items for motorcyclists, outdoor enthusiasts, dancers, and just regular people looking for something that looks and feels good and comes at an excellent price. Not bad for a place located upcountry. Who shops here? In an area with long winding back roads and scenic highways, motorcyclists find chaps, helmets, vests, saddlebags, gloves… in short, just about everything a cyclist needs, aside from the bike. Those who favor the Western-style country look can find hats, shirts, belts, while the selection of dancewear appeals to those involved in jazz, Irish step, tap, etc. Myself? I come here looking for boots, and here’s where shoppers can get real bargains. First of all, boots and other footware is very reasonably priced, but when things start getting discounted… the specials are really special. Example: I got a pair of workboots originally priced at $ 130 most places(including here) marked down close to the end of the season, to $ 20. There is a particularly strong selection of moccasins and slippers that beats any place in the Upper Valley in quality and selection. I’d very strongly recommend stopping here for anyone looking for workboots. I will confess that I’ve done little shopping in the accessories selection but I can testify to the fact that the selection here is very strong. Briefcases, backpacks and wallets here are of extremely high quality and could be sold in larger cities at higher prices. And… it’s very possible to also find some great discounted items here, as was the case when some of us found an awesome shearling handbag for a friend that was originally over $ 100 and marked down to under $ 20. And bargains like that aren’t unusual. If you put the Country Cobbler in a larger city it would do very well. It offers all of the kinds of goods and services one would expect of a well appointed leather store. Yet it still has a certain kind of country upretentiousness that makes shopping there a treat and a pleasure. Dancer, motorcyclist, outdoor enthusiast… all will find something at the Country Cobbler. Very much recommended.
