They say they’re the«World’s Fastest Couch Potato», and nothing could be more true. For years, I’ve thought about adopting a Greyhound. I read up on the breed, learning what I could and deciding whether or not it would be a good fit for me and my lifestyle. After all, becoming a dog owner is no small decision. It’s a lot of responsibility, and up until recently, the timing was never quite right. But last year, I took the leap. I called up MSGAO, the local adoption organization and made an appointment to go visit the available dogs and learn a little more about the process. When I got to the kennel, I was overwhelmed with the number of dogs that were in need of a home. I was only able to choose one, and it was so hard because I wanted to take them all home with me. Vicky, the kennel manager, was awesome. She let me take out each of the dogs from their crate and interact with them one on one. Amazingly enough, I actually did take them all out — every single one of them. Some of them twice. But at the end of the day, it wasn’t me who chose the dog, it was the dog who chose me. Her name was Cat, a beautiful fawn colored female with sweet eyes and a playful disposition. When she jumped down out of her crate, instead of walking off on her own like most of the other dogs, she stopped, looked up at me and wagged her tail. Then she ran to the dogie bed in the next room and just plopped on it. It was hilarious. I sat down and petted her, and when I would stop, she would paw at me for more. I was hooked. A few days later, I brought Cat Dog home and she has been with me now for almost a year. I can say, she is without question, the best dog I have ever had. She’s smart, sweet and extremely low maintenance. She never chews anything except her toys, was completely house broken from day one and generally just wants to lay quietly near me. I let her outside about 2 or 3 times a day, and she runs with all her might, as fast as she can(and boy is she fast) around the backyard. Then she stops. She’s done. Nap time again again. I would highly recommend this breed for anyone who is looking for a sweet canine companion who demands little but gives so much. And Mid South Greyhound Adoption Option is a fantastic organization where the dogs are loved and cared for, and every attempt made at finding them permanent homes. Give them a call, or better yet, visit their website and take a look at the available dogs. You might just find youself as hooked as I was.
