This Walgreens is a wonderful West Memphis freak show. They have a mentally ill guy who gathers carts and protects pretty women as they walk to their car. They have a little-person cashier who is so nice and wears Hollywood style makeup. They have a power tripping pharmacist who practically places you under arrest if you ask for cold medicine. They have an almost beautiful, tan asian girl at the makeup counter. They’ve got a fully-stocked liquor store and the line for it on Friday night is one of my favorite places to people-watch. You see truckers, truck– stop hookers, businesspeople, farmers and bootleggers. Although the line is long it moves very quickly. But don’t accidentally break in line by going directly to the register first. I always get good service at the store and I enjoy its wonderful freakiness.

I have used this Walgreens for prescriptions before and yet lately, they seem to have slipped. Not just the pharmacy, either. Let me just tell you of two recent experiences. 1, I went in and bought some food, milk, etc. and went to pay via credit card(less than $ 25 of stuff) and the lady carded me for ID. I had to walk all the way back to my car, get my ID(i keep the wallet in the car) and come back in. She had in the MEANTIME she had put my milk and yogurt BACKUP. I had to then go back down the isle and get those items again b4 walking back to the checkout and all this with fatigue going on. 2, I dropped off a presc recently at the drive thru window. «be ready in about an hour». Next day, not only not ready — they LOSTTHEPRESCRIPTION. No record of it and I gave the Dr. info and they’d call me back. No call. I call AGAIN a few days later. No idea so I give Dr. info AGAIN and they call and say they’ll have it ready this time. Still no call from them. 3, ok, 3 things, I am now calling them again and TWICE I have been disconnected during waiting on hold b4 getting the pharmacy dept. So, is my presc ready? Who the hell knows? I think from now on, I’m using a different pharmacy. They seem to be in slow motion mode all the time but it depends on who’s working.

The store and liquor sections are fine, but they have the slowest pharmacy ever. Got a prescription for Zyrtec D and dropped it off; was told it would be ready by noon. Came back at 6:00 that evening and it still wasn’t ready and had to wait 30 minutes. It wouldn’t have been so bad if I couldn’t see the Zyrtec D on the shelf behind the register, or the fact the pharmacy techs were laughing and having a great time doing nothing. They had always been slow, but this incident made me swap pharmacies.

Living(wait, is it living?) in a dry county as we do, this Walgreens is a well known«Welcome back to Arkansas» stop for everyone who needs to restock their ahem.. .medicine cabinet coming home from Memphis. West Memphis has that«hey now, this is a dangerous place» sensation all over it, this Walgreen’s is no exception however you take the risk since they typically have a lot of good stuff on sale. Not a tremendous selection, but good selection of Scotch and other standards. I even spot a few good Belgian beers here from time to time. And it is right next door to a Krystal and Lenny’s Subs if you need a snack for the ride home.
