Hong Kong Gourmet

Honestly first ever review. Only felt the need because this was literally not only the worst Chinese food I’ve ever ordered, it was seriously the worst food period. Yellow rice, definitely not chicken in the sesame chicken, just awful. My ex-​girlfriend and I are in the in between period of eating and puking. Not joking. Don’t do it.

Short and simple: Don’t Order Out Here. You can do a lot better anywhere else. Since this place has changed names, and ownership it has gone from a fairly good takeout restaurant to pretty much the worst place to get Chinese food. (or any kind of food for that matter) in Newton. Throw your takeout menu in the recycling bin, it’s better off being made into post consumer waste.

Terrible service! Very rude staff. First of all i had to repeat my phone number and adress hundred times because those people dont understand english. Second I were waiting for food one hour and half and when i called them and ask where is the food they said the driver on the way after half hour food still not here. I called again and they told me that they dont have that order at all. I am very disappointed and upset. Will never order there again!

This place is now under new management. I know that when this happens, things change and usually not for the good.
I really miss the old management!
It took me forever to place my order. When told it would take 45 minutes for delivery, it took almost an hour & a half (I live like 5 minutes away from this place too). The delivery guy did apologize profusely and admitted there was a lack of communication within the place.
The food. Wow. Where do I begin. Awful. The sesame chicken is nothing like what it was. It just tasted like candied chicken. So syrupy. The wonton soup was ok. Don’t think they needed to add in all the extra things like mushrooms. I like just the basic wonton soup — broth, wontons, whatever the green vegetable is in it and the sliced pork. Simple — the way it should be.
I did not place my typical order this time, which would have included the sweet and sour chicken and beef lo mein. After this experience, I’m honestly afraid to. This is really too bad because this WAS the only good Chinese takeout/​delivery place in the area.
Really a shame.

Shocked by all the high reviews, the food was gross overall, cheap oil that tainted the taste of the semi-​fresh veggies and too tough beef was the main theme of the night, even the soup didn’t taste very good, the best dish I had was sesame chicken, where the sauce hid the taste of whatever oil they doused all the dishes with. Come on people, write some honest reviews, this cheap chinese food joint is NOT GOOD

This is our family’s favorite chinese restaurant. Take-​out only – incredible food, plus no MSG! Nothing seems to compare, and we always head back to Hong Kong Gourmet when we’re craving Chinese food!

Amazing food and very very clean, my favorite chinese food spot wish there was one closer!

We still love this place, but their new menu didn’t say that they don’t use MSG. We called them and they said that we request to have no MSG in our food.

This place has to have the best Chinese food in the Newton/​Waltham area. We have tried them numerous times in the past few months and everything we get from them is delicious!
I always go and pick up the food. I call it in and it is always ready when I get there. The people there are very friendly and courteous.
They have large and small portions for many items. They don’t use MSG and their food is not too salty or oily. All the food we have ordered is very flavorful and the portions are good sized.
We have had Kung Pao Chicken, Kung Pao Tofu, Yu Hsiang Tofu, Curry Chicken, Moo Goo Gai Pan, Tofu Szechuan Style and Chicken with Ginger, Scallion and Onion. All of these were excellent!!!
We will definitely go back. We seem to be going there every other week because it is so good.

I have been here many times and the food is consistently good. It is always hot when I pick it up and the restaurant is very clean.
The service is very good. I would recommend this place to any one in the Newton area looking for some great Chinese at a very good price.

By far the best Chinese I have had in a long time! Unless your going to Chinatown in Boston, HK Gourmet is absolutely the next best thing.
I have only ordered for delivery, so I cannot tell you anything about dining in, but everything I have ordered has always been hot, fresh, full of flavor, and correct.
There portions are perfect and on most items you can choose a small or large.
Their scallion pancake is the bomb, crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside and tons of flavor. Great Wonton soup, and my favorite the Pork fried rice is beyond compare. Perfectly done not too greasy and tastes out of this world.
The General Gau’s chicken is yummy, crispy on the outside moist on the inside and not overly breaded, but if you like it super spicy then you might have to add you own or ask them for extra spicy.
Great food, great prices, and super fast delivery! Enough said!!!

I don’t understand all the good reviews.
I decided to give HK gourmet a try after reading the various good reviews. We sampled a few items to get a feel for what they have to offer. The crab rangoons were average. Spring & egg rolls were both poor. Beef Teriakyi was burnt.
On the entrée side, the orange beef had far too much breading. It was overcooked and the sauce was terrible. The salt and pepper shrimp was actually very good with a touch of unexpected spice.
Overall, I wouldn’t say terrible but I don’t think I’d go back.

Our 1^st time and both liked it. Had 4 items and all were considered winners.
We forgot to order rice and they did not ask us, so remember to.
Their online menu says to ask for discount when ordering; $ 3 off order over $ 20.
They offer to bring food out to cars if you call, as parking is not great there, sometimes all spots nearby are taken.
1. Egg drop soup–
2. Jumbo shrimp with mixed vegetables-​the version from the «healthy & lo-​cal specials– I had a tasre of vegetables as I am the vegetarian in family. As lo-​cal dish, they lacked flavordul sauce but were high quality and cooked well.
3. Scallion Pancake — excellent, not greasy at all
4. Yu Hsiang style Tofu — as advertised, were spicy, could have been more spicy, but definitely more than most suburban Chinese food.
We’ll be back for more yummee takeout.

We ordered take out from here a few Saturdays ago, and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. First, they have combination plates for lunch and dinner, which is great, since for some reason, a lot of places in the area don’t. The portions are really large. We ordered the General Gao Chicken and a combo app. plate. Both were really good. I have to say this is some of the best general gao I’ve had in the Newton area. The Terriyaki Beef was also delicious. The prices were affordable compared to other places and for how much food you’re getting. The service was also super quick, as our food was ready to be picked up in 10 minutes. We will definitely order from here again!

I just ordered from here for the first time. The pork fried rice and pork lo mein were both great. The general gao’s chicken could stand a bit more spice. The ravioli and crab Rangoon were a bit too sweet. Good overall but not fantastic. I’ll give ten another shot though.

HK Gourmet is among the better chinese food restaurants in the Newton area.
The crab rangoons and lo mein are a little weak but most of the main entrees are really good. My only big complaint is that some of the veggies seem like they aren’t fresh (canned), particularly the mushrooms. But, compared to other chinese restaurants in the area, this one is by far the best.
Honestly my favorite things about this place are the insanely fast delivery (think less than 15 minutes) and the fact that they throw in free items when you order a certain amount of food.

My quest to find good Chinese food in Waltham is not over. But until I find it, Hong Kong Gourmet, just across the border in West Newton, looks like it’s going to be my go-​to.
Overall, entrees are refreshingly non-​greasy. Good portions in the large entrée (you can get them small if you want). We got hot and sour and egg drop soups, both pretty good. Pork fried rice was also good.
I don’t think rice comes with the meal though. You do get free stuff like lo mein, fried rice, etc. if you spend more than $ 20. Really friendly on the phone too!

Wow, ordered tonight when I was craving Chinese, and it was delish! The broccoli was amazingly fresh, and the spare ribs, wow yum! I will definitely be ordering again.
As stated in other reviews, they give you free stuff over $ 20. Also, they had no problem delivering to Watertown (no minimum order either!).

Just tried this restaurant last night. Sooooooooo good! Large menu, clean, neat restaurant and friendly staff! I called ahead for a «pick-​up» order which was ready in 10 minutes! Wow, talk about quick, hot and good! I ordered the scallion pancakes, pu-​pu platter for 2 with a FREE pork fried rice (order was over $ 20.00). You cannot beat that! When ordering Chinese there are always left-​overs for the next day; so, it’s a treat opening the fridge finding Hong Kong Gourmet :)

Great Chinese food! Their menu is filled with all the standard Americanized Chinese offerings, plus more. The staff is super friendly and has never made a mistake on an order. Slightly pricey in the end but they give you tons of free items when your order is over $ 20. They continue to add free food the higher your final bill!
Perfect standby for a quick dinner.

Hong Kong Gourmet is a great place to go for good, Americanized Chinese food. The place only serves the food to-​go, so you can pick-​up your food or have it delivered. I have picked up my food and also had delivery – each time the food has been hot and tasted fresh. Delivery has always been quick, under a half hour, and the staff at Hong Kong Gourmet is super friendly too. Parking here can be troublesome though, since the place is on busy Washington Street.
