Got a Unilocal deal $ 75 worth of services for $ 50. Made an appt for a cut and blow out with Mumtahanah. The appt. was at 10:00 and she started me promptly at that time (I was on my way by 11:15 or so). Got the conditioner washed out of my hair (I had already shampooed at home) and then «M» combed, blew and cut my hair. She uses a round brush which did not get my hair completely straight but she was gentle. She also sat me under a hooded dryer for a brief spell to make sure my roots weren’t wet (good call). After the blow dry and cut I got a flat iron and was on my way. I’m rocking curls so I’ll have more to say about the cut when I actually wash it myself. All in all a good experience. Nothing earth shattering, nothing horrible. I left feeling good and I’d def. go back (mostly because I was in and out quick, the heat on my hair wasn’t excessive and M knows natural hair care). Paid $ 50.00 for the cut and style… stay tuned for an update when I evaluate my cut…

I was passing through the area and desperately needed to dye my hair. The receptionist was super friendly and was able to squeeze me in during the weekend. Kim, the owner, colored my hair and instantly made me feel welcomed. Teshana (sorry for the spelling!) gave the best head and neck massage ever while washing my hair. If you don’t need your hair cut or styled but just want her to wash your hair, it’s worth it! I had a long drive following my appointment but just wanted to curl up and go to bed.
Highly recommend this place as a fun location just to hang out. One doesn’t always feel a sense of community or a welcoming nature in all hair salons, but that’s what makes Soultry Scissors unique. You can tell that everyone knows one another and that the staff has fun not only together but with their customers too. Such a welcoming, hospitable and fun environment… Wish I lived in the area to make it my regular salon…

I took my daughter here to get a deep condition and a trim. First thing we got there for a 10am appt. and they were running a bit late… she was called up at 10:02! Wow! A salon that was on time! That has never happened to me before so I was a bit confused. :-). Everyone there was friendly, professional, knowledgable and quick to advise. My daughter’s hair came out great. I will definitely go back there. My only complaint (although that word is too strong) is that the music is a bit loud; at times I had trouble hearing the stylist. LOVE THIS PLACE!!!

Thank goodness! A salon for women of color where the stylists are super professional and friendly. I had my Brazilian Blowout done today for the first time with Mumtahanah Jackson. She immediately made me feel comfortable… she works magic with the scalp massage during the shampoos… and it was the most gentle blowout I’ve ever received. Mumtahanah doesn’t keep her hair dryer super hot (a nice change from my prior stylist who obviously thought «the hotter the better»)…and the hot flat iron never touched my scalp (like with other stylists). I couldn’t be happier with the results. She styled my hair so pretty with some spiral curls (with a flat iron) and offered me tips for how to wear it naturally with 2-​strand twists. The shop plays R&B music at respectable volume and all of the ladies in the shop were welcoming. These ladies know exactly what they’re doing. I’ll definitely be back, again and again.

The folks here are very friendly and nice. I needed some hair care products and as I was passing by I noticed the store, stepped in to get their expertise and was pleasantly surprised when most of the staff chipped in to give me the recommendation of the best brands to buy for my hair. Even though I was a guy I was impressed that they would be so willing to help and that they knew so much about male hair care products. The shop itself was very clean and nice, & I can see why customers would enjoy getting their hair treated here. Great staff, great expertise, and I can definitely see this being a hot spot for women to get their hair done. the location is also very convenient if you having a busy day

I was looking for a spot to get my hair done last minute. I have natural hair and wanted a blow out. This was the only option and looking at these Unilocal reviews I went in with high hopes. My hair was styled by Velma. She was kind and very fast, but the end result was just ok. Sometimes with blow outs it is a hit or miss. It may have been the products that were used or the fact that she chose to blow dry my hair with a diffuser to detangle it, blow dry it with a round brush, flat iron it bone straight, then flat iron it again to give it that nice bump at the ends. I think all that heat, plus the products used left my hair feeling dry. As I looked around at the other ladies getting their hair done, none of them looked that much better to be honest (regardless if they had natural hair or not). I was glad I had the Unilocal discount but I don’t think I’ll return again.

Like other reviewers I was a bit nervous about finding a salon to get a much needed trim for my natural hair. The appt was easy to make, I did not have to wait around all day (and my appt was at 12:30 on a Saturday –i prepared myself for the worst), and everyone was polite. My stylist, Mumtahanah, was great — she only cut what was needed and she knew how to comb through/​detangle my natural hair. I also observed that all the other clients looked like they had healthy hair, which was encouraging. I will return

I’ve been looking for a hairstylist that I could trust and not have me spend a whole day sitting!!! I didn’t know what to expect! But my expectations were met! I had an excellent stylist by the name of Meena! She is awesome. She took a look at my hair and knew exactly what I needed and I left her chair feeling oh so sexy! And we conversed like we new each other for years. Meena will have me driving from Elizabeth to go to her!!!

I was referred to Soultry Scissors by my cousin who has very long natural hair. Kim, my stylist was very professional and gave me a helpful consultation to reach my hair goals. I’ll be back.

For my first visit, I waited 1 hour for an appt w/​Velma (Junior stylist) as I watched all the other Senior stylists getting their clients in & out of the door. Thumbs down. She gave me a relaxer, trim, and blowout. I thought she did a good job with the relaxer & blowout but I won’t ask for her to cut my hair again since she didn’t appear confident.
Aside from the waiting, I thought the shop experience was nice and staff, friendly. I plan to return.

I love this salon. When I moved to New Jersey I was scared about trusting my natural hair to a new stylist. I came across Soultry Scissors and haven’t looked back. I’ve had my hair styled by both Ramena and Mumtahanna. I haven’t let not satisfied.

Good spot. Just remember your stuff. I’ve had a large improvement in the growth and health of my hair.

I love this salon. I have been going practically since it first opened in the original location. Soultry Scissors gives you the full salon experience from the minute you walk in the door. They offer to take your coat, ask you if you would like something to drink, and they do an amazing job on your hair without holding you hostage all day. Ninety percent of the time I don’t have an appointment or make one last minute via the online system. This means I have been serviced at least once by everyone who works there and they are all fantastic. One of my favorite salons by far!

If your looking for color and highlight that matches the Likes of Jlo’s hair this is the salon to go to. My daughter has been seeing Kim the owner of Soultry Scissors for close to a year for hair extensions, and coloring to which we have been more than satisfied. Kim now has captured me as one of her loyal clients! I love my hair color, I asked for color and highlights comparable to the look of JLo’s. Kim more than matched the look!

My favorite hair salon in New Jersey! Mumtahanah is amazing and everyone is so nice! I love getting my hair done here because they take their time and are extremely patient with natural heads like myself. Every time I’m in town I stop by to have my hair trimmed, blow dried and flat ironed. Highly recommended.
Good music playlist is definitely a plus!

I found this place on Unilocal and was pleasantly surprised. My first appointment was with a stylist named Mumtahanah. She was awesome! My hair was in need of major surgery due to a botched color job at another salon. I was desperate to find a stylist who would take the time to provide a personal consultation. She took her time and explained everything and answered all my questions. Her advice was great and my hair is on the road to recovery. She made a client out of me and will be returning with my 8 year old. Great location, lots of space. As a bonus they have a makeup specialist who sells the Motives line which I have been dying to sample.

I moved to NJ from Atlanta (the epicenter of all things hair and hair stylists) and had not been able to find anyone to take care of my natural hair. I did a Google search and found this place. I loved Natonya (might be spelling it incorrectly) after the first visit. She not only blew my hair out so that it wasn’t totally fried and damaged, but she was all about helping me grow my hair. Every woman and child I see in there always leaves looking amazing. The shop is a nice size — not huge but not tiny — and is kept up. They always have a great playlist going and I’m never there for hours! Most important of all, the prices here are super reasonable. While in ATL I paid over $ 100 a pop to get a deep conditioner, natural blow out and some curls. Here I pay between $ 50 – 60. It’s so worth it to not have to worry about my hair falling out, breaking or being damaged.

I was introduced to Soultry Scissors, by a past stylist. All the stylists working there, are great at what they do. I would marvel at how beautiful the ladies leaving the chairs looked, when they were done & walked pass me, as I was sitting under the dryer. After my previous stylist left, I had the pleasure of having Rameena do my hair. When I used to relax my hair, it always came out looking shiny, healthy. She even gave me courage to try out some flexi-​rod curls and I fell in love with the look. I got so many compliments on it. Now that I’m natural and have a really short hairstyle, I’ve taken to doing my hair myself. However, I would definitely recommend you visit. You pay a little more, but you get great results.

Mumtahanah is my hair stylist and she is excellent with hair care, styles and maintenance. She works with long hair, short hair, colors, weaves, naturals, etc. I just moved back to Jersey and decided to try a new salon and read the previous reviews about this place. Salon quality products are used, and I am able to maintain my hair in between appointments. I love the atmosphere of the salon and they do not overbook their appointments. There are other stylists there that does excellent work also.

I just moved to Jersey and was struggling with finding a hair salon. My Realtor referred me to Soultry Scissors and I am extremely grateful! I made a last minute appointment and was able to get in Saturday morning. The stylist was awesome and very knowledgeable about the type of treatment I have in my hair. I was impressed and have already made my two week appointment for myself and my daughter.
The salon is a bit small but the end result was well worth the cramp space.
