Returning to the Midwest from a winter break in FL, my wife & I were driving thru rural Mississippi… intentionally using a road less traveled to see what the state really was like. Realizing that we had concentrated on ocean seafood for the past weeks, thought it would be interesting to experience catfish prepared Southern style. An inquiry at a sporting goods store in West Point gave us a lead to a town favorite so long as we understood that this was a true shack, with few tables, offering little beyond excellent fried catfish filets, okra, green tomatoes, etc. We ate inside, although most locals picked up their dinners to go. The owner is a delightful young woman, assisted in the kitchen by her Mom, who taught her how to prepare great food, simply, in the traditional local way. We will even divert our route off the Interstate to go back on future trips.
