This place has been here forever. Great Food. Nice and cool inside. I love the Chile Colorado.

Was invited to lunch here by my husband, «you’ll love the food» he said. «It’s really good». Hhmm ok I guess and so I came. He recommended the fish tacos so i got the combo with 2 fish tacos. I’ve tried fish tacos that were fried in a batter, but theirs are not. It’s marinated in a sauce and grilled, topped with a cabbage mix and that’s it. It was kinda blah it needed something. some kind of sauce? Salt? Maybe guacamole? I don’t know but i was not wowed even after I overdose it with 2 different salsas. The tortilla is not soft either it’s fried. Which gives it a little crunch which is fine but still needed flavor. The combo came with black beans and white rice. The rice was actually good, but I’m not a fan of black whole beans and wish I would have known it came with those I would have asked for refried pinto beans. The horchata was very sweet, and of course it not authentic homemade horchata but some powdered one, i didn’t enjoy it. I did like the art work around the restaurant though.

Excellent salsa bar but the service is crap. Always try to call in my order and they hang up on you. Finally got a hold of someone yesterday and they told me that the Asada fries came with olives and tomatoes on top. Get my food home and there’s no olives nor tomatoes

Recently went to Sal’s for the first time and really enjoyed it! I’ve never been to a restaurant that is so artistically unique! The use of tile in this place is incredible. As far as the food, it’s good… nothing super special about it, but it came out hot and tasty and that’s all I could ask for the price I paid! My only complaint is that service was a little slow. It took a while for them to ring us up and a while for our food to come out. Other than that, Sal’s is a great place to go when you’re craving some authentic Mexican cuisine!

Highlights: excellent and large menu selection. Awesome self serve salsa bar. $ 1 street tacos $ 3 beers during happy hour 2pm-5pm. Negatives: meat isn’t super tasty and salsa is mild. Even the one labeled super hot w/habanero didn’t have any heat. Overall I love this place for being a friendly neighborhood spot with good cheap food.

Came in for the lunch special and was pleased with the food. Upon entering the establishment there was a table set out with all of the lunch specials plated, so you could see what your plate looks like and what comes with the special. For me and my buddy the fish tacos were a no brainer. Like most mexican places they had a chip and salsa bar with a good variety. The outdoor seating is nice and they have several tile mosaics around the entire place. The fish tacos are not battered and fried but instead are juicy and grilled. It is a basic taco, but it is done right. I wish the place was just a little cleaner, since our table smelled like it had been wiped with a rag that hadn’t been washed in weeks. Unfortunately the smell took away from the delicious tacos. The beans and rice left me desiring for something else, because they just didn’t hit the spot, The beans were watery and the rice is not your traditional mexican rice, so brace yourself when it comes to sides.

It’s OK. My orders were messed up. When ordering a side of guacamole, that doesn’t mean avocado salsa and being charged for it. That was REALLY disappointing. The young girl doesn’t know the food at all. When I asked her a question she didn’t proceed to actually inquire in the back. I don’t think she is suitable for cashier/server. She’s very polite, just not a good fit.

We stopped in a couple weeks ago for Sunday brunch. Put our name on the waiting list. The guy at the counter took our name and number and let us know it would be a 45 min wait and would call us when the table was ready. Never heard from him. I guess they didn’t need our business

Went there last night for some to go for me and my boyfriend and everything I got was so fresh and tasty! Crispy tortillas, yummy enchiladas, beans and rice didn’t seem like they were warmed up in the container in microwave so that was a plus. This place really is hit or miss at times but when it hits, it really hits!

This place is awesome! Amazing authentic food and great staff! They always have deals and happy hour. Free chips and salsa with at least 10 different styles. Customer service is top notch! Really cool at on the walls too. Just a great place all around!

Just like I remember 20 years ago. Great portions and food. Especially for the price. There is a salsa bar and self serve chips so you can always get enough. Lots of quality choices on the menu.

Solid 3.5 stars — Local spot celebrating their 35th year — WOW! On a recent visit to Sacramento, I was introduced to Sal’s Tacos for dinner and it definitely didn’t disappoint. There is a chalkboard menu of offerings as well as specials with visuals. Beer and wine available too. They have breakfast items and burgers too(although ordering a burgers & fries at a Mexican spot seems strange to me — whatever floats your boat!) I decided on the taquitos special with refried beans and rice. I also wanted to try a taco so I ordered a fish one. To wash it all down, I got a Horchata. Complimentary chips and salsa bar — those CHIPS! I didn’t want to fill up on chips so only grabbed a small amount but quickly went back for more. I appreciate housemade chips — these had a little salt & lime — absolutely delicious. I’m a wimp when it comes to spice so I only stuck with mild salsa & radishes but there were an array of choices to choose from. Once you’ve ordered at the counter, you go find a seat. We had a large party so opted for a long table in the back room. The mosaic art everywhere is really cool — I really enjoyed admiring them while waiting for my food. Portions were generous — I thought the taquitos was a bit TOO crispy but flavor was good. The fish taco was also a nice side with a little peppery kick. I was laughing when I got my $ 3 Horchata because it came in a giant beer mug. Yes there was a bunch of ice in it but that’s still a lot for $ 3. Impressed haha. If I were to visit Sac again and craving some Mexican food, I would definitely eat here again to try other menu items. Delicious food with generous portions at reasonable prices — doesn’t get much better than that! Tips: Surrounding area appears to be a bit on the sketchy side — even though they have a small private lot, definitely lock those doors and hide your valuables!

Since I live right down the street I keep giving this place more chances to redeem themselves but my experience keeps coming up short. To start the staff I’ve encountered are not friendly at all. I get the vive that they just want me to eat and get the hell out. I’ve only stopped by when I’m the only customer there. Maybe they’ll get friendlier once I become a regular? You would think they’d appreciate their own Latino paisa stopping by to support their establishment a little more. The street taco meat I got the first time was not the best quality. More gristle than there needs to be. The second time I got carnita sopes and they tasted bland. 3rd time ordered a super burrito and I had to wait like 20 minutes. Customers came and went and I was still there. If I didn’t pay upfront I would’ve just left. I honestly need to stop tipping up front. Side rant: Anybody else hate the fact that you have to decide on tipping right as you get the credit card receipt for a signature? That burrito was HUGE and tasted alright so I won’t deduct a star. I’ll keep em at 2 stars.

Meh. There’s better. So, there’s lots of reasons to like Sal’s, but on my sole visit so far(and anticipated), the food was not particularly one of them.(There are also others much worse, and I would go to Sal’s before them.) Sal’s is rightly famous for its mosaic theme and impressive salsa bar, which is nearly a meal in and of itself. The mosaics are remarkably well done, and tile is a general theme throughout the restaurant. Another feature is the 6 specials on the lunch menu are actually prepared dishes, under wraps, right there in the ordering area. I had the chicken flautas on the lunch special, with spanish rice and refried beans. Maybe I’m just too gringo, but when I think«flautas» I think«flour tortilla, crispy» not«corn tortilla, crunchy.» First-World problem? Maybe, but that’s me.(OK, just checked with a Latino friend, he confirms flautas may be corn and crunchy, but would also expect to be asked his preference when ordering.) Presentation was exceptional, looked really good, with fresh sliced red onion, green peppers and a bed of romaine(not iceberg!) lettuce, just like the example on the specials table. But pretty isn’t always tasty, and that was the case today.

Where should I start. I’ll try and be kind right now and just say the food I had here is very poor quality. I had their menudo and the meat was very VERY soggy and overcooked. A whole bowl went to waste. One thing I can say was pretty good was the salsa. Thats about it. If my boyfriend didnt like this place I definitely wouldn’t come again. Also, the time on here says they open at 10am so me and my boyfriend came down and the open sign was off… so we called the place while outside in the front and they were not answering the phone and keep in mind it was only a few mins before 11am(what another website said they open) so a couple of minutes after 11 we call again and still no answer so we left. Just poor customer service.

This place is really cute, not sure about the neighborhood– there were bums walking around the streets but then there’s townhomes that are modern and updated– I’m sorta confused on how to feel about that. The salsa bar was cute, had plenty of salsa– I liked the mild and the cucumber salsa salad thing was good. The whole place is very colorful and has tile art which is really cool. I’m assuming they love the Sacramento Kings since they had a Kings room and art of Peja and Vlade Divac. Price was it was about $ 12 – 13 per person– however you can definitely get it under $ 10 with the street tacos and a smaller meal. We walked in around 4:40pm and you just go straight to ordering then they bring the food to your table. I ordered the Pisole and street tacos and my boyfriend ordered the Huevos con Enchiladas. Pisole: weak in flavor but with 2 bowls of the hot salsa it was good. I also added onions and cilantro. Street Tacos: Ok– carne Asada was normal– however they only serve it on one tiny corn tortilla where as most places serve it on two corn tortillas– which I prefer because they fall apart. I had about three huge pieces of fat in mine– I know it’s impossible to get rid of all the fat– but i hate biting into a chunk of fat. Huevos con enchilada: he said it was really delicious, potatoes served with the meal were really good — I just had to try it! Enough to share! I like how they serve all drinks in a chilled glass. I feel bad giving them three stars– but that’s only because the food wasn’t work the price to me… But maybe I’ll try something different next time and update my stars. But until then– enjoy!

We come to Sal’s when we get a chance to head into West Sac around dinner time. They have pretty large portions and we are always really full when we leave. They have an awesome chip bar. Tons of great salsas! I always get the chicken taco salad. They don’t put much sour cream on it but they have a delicious ranch like dip at the salsa bar made from sour cream and jalapeños I think… It’s delicious! My husband normally mixes it up. One that sticks out the most so me is the mega wet burrito… it is HUGE!

Sal’s is allways a great place to stop at when your in the west sacramento area. This is like my 50th time coming here and first review since ive been Unilocaling. The women who work here are vary nice to me all the time which makes my experience here awesome!!! Warning stay away from the chips you will fill up on them before your food comes out lol. This is the best mexican restaurant in town by far my other fav is the taqueria down the street from my house but this one is definitely more hip and bigger of course. Come give sal’s a try you wont regret it.
