Mills falls and history The Westbrook River Walk is a cool walk along the Presumpscot River in the center of Westbrook. It runs for about 1.2 miles and is an easy and pleasant stroll along the water. No real hills and the entire path is paved and easy to follow. Of course there are great views of the river that once powered the mill industry here in Westbrook. Lots of clothing and shoe mills were situated along the water as well as some power plants. Most are long gone but the river still remains. Lots of benches to sit and rest and even a few piers for fishing. Several places are available to launch canoes and kayaks but you better be sure what is waiting around the next bend or you might be in for a big and very unpleasant surprise. Some rather fierce and powerful waterfalls are present along the river and are best avoided in any type of watercraft unless you happen to feel like dying that day. Plenty of parking is available along the water either on Main Street or in the numerous public parking lots. This is a very cool and historic walk with some impressive views. A great glimpse into the past and what it must have been like during the industrial age in this region.
