I have no clue why this place would get anything other than 5 stars. For starters I found this place because these cat’s are not kept in bright, sterile, cold, and confined «cat condos» and I love that. They are able to roam free and in the process familiarize themselves with other cats and humans. The staff genuinely loves all of the animals here and seem to do their very best to send them home to you although they do have some requirements which I think is respectable. I have to admit I was not much of a cat person before we fostered a lost cat whom we eventually found his owner but I could not be more impressed or love my cat more!!! He is super healthy, and well balanced of course with the exception that he is under 1 which makes him very mischevious naturally.
Even if you’re not in the market for a pet stop in and treat yourself to some kitten therapy. You can meander, play, and pet all of the cat’s & kittens your heart desires wth out being pestered or bothered. I think I spent a good hour there my first visit!

Absolutely amazing establishment. The people there really care and take amazing care of the animals. Plus you can tell the animals are pretty happy. Total grassroots cause. They run off donations so if you have the means definitely help them out.

We had adopted two kittens from a neighbor and found shots at a vet very expensive, after having a free check-​up with a vet. I spontaneously stopped at Almost Home to ask about finding a low-​cost shot clinic. We were so impressed to see all the cats roaming freely rather than sad looking in cages. The Almost Home staff could not have been nicer and more helpful! If anyone wants to adopt a happy, well cared for cat, Almost Home is the place for you.

This review is long overdue.
I adopted a kitten from this shelter in the summer of 2010 while suffering a broken heart from the recent loss of an elderly cat to heart failure. So maybe I’m biased because of how much I love the cat that I adopted from this shelter? I don’t know.
Anyway, I was impressed by this place primarily because it was so unlike the majority of depressing animal shelters that seem to house angry or depressed animals with various behavioral problems. Also, unlike most shelters, the cats were not in small cages. They were either roaming free in the main part of the shelter or they were in large rooms, each of which accommodates cats of different «needs» (i.e., a room for newly rescued cats, a room for kittens, a room for shy cats, etc.).
Also, this shelter screens potential cat owners, which I think is a good thing because it limits the potential for the newly adopted pets from being returned due to a bad match between the owner and pet.
Most importantly, though, the cats appeared to be happy and well cared for.
The only thing I don’t agree with is the requirement to sign an agreement that you will never declaw a cat that you’ve adopted. Though I can’t say that declawing is «right», I think pet owners should have the option to choose. I would rather declaw than to have no choice but to give up a cat to an animal shelter due to destructive clawing on the furniture and risk the possibility of the cat ultimately being euthanized.

There you have it, folks. The adoption counselor is not willing to admit when she’s wrong, and she just might deny you for absolutely no good reason. She sees two young professionals who have years of experience caring for and working with animals as «unfit for pets;» why? We still don’t know.
If I were looking to adopt another cat, I would avoid the drama and stress of this place. The adoption counselor might just not like the look of you, or might make up a random stipulation that results in you not being able to adopt a cat.
Thanks for your response, Kathleen. And thanks for also not addressing any of the problems I had with your shelter, but instead wrongfully accusing me of being a bad pet owner based on absolutely no knowledge of me. I hope you change your whole perspective on who you are and fix your God complex, because there are a lot of cats out there that need homes, and a lot of good, responsible people that want to adopt them.

I’ll preface this by saying that this place gets two stars because the facility itself is nice. It’s a clean, safe environment that the cats seem to enjoy, or at least tolerate. Visiting here was a pleasant experience until we got around to actually trying to adopt a cat.
First off, there were no adoption counselors present when we arrived (why wouldn’t there always be one available during business hours?) So, after warming to a particular kitten, we left for a couple hours and returned around the time we were told someone would be available for adoptions. After sitting around another 20 mins after returning, we were told that we wouldn’t be able to adopt the kitten in question because it had to go home with another kitten, not a particular kitten, mind you, not a litter-​mate, just one of the other kittens… just because, despite the fact that this particular kitten showed little-​to-​no interest in playing with the other kittens. I worked at a humane society for many years with a strict adoption policy and have never encountered such thinking. To me, it seemed completely random and without precedent, like a rule made up by someone who has no idea what they’re doing. My mother, who has also worked in the pet adoption industry and now at a vet’s office also found this adoption-​caveat to be completely insane.
While we waited around to discuss this further with the adoption counselor we found ourselves warming to another cat — this one an older adult. She seemed to take a particular shine to my girlfriend, something other visitors and employees found remarkable. I was very much in favor of giving a nice home to an adult cat that had a lot less chance of being adopted than one of their many kittens. While we waited and grew even more in love with this special feline, we tried interrogating the other employees for information about the cat to see if she would be a good fit. Although they were quite friendly, they knew nothing of her particulars or whether we would be able to adopt her. Eventually, the counselor buzzed by us and told us not to fall in love with this particular cat because she «hated dogs» and couldn’t go home with us, despite the fact that our dog is a very docile, friendly, and sleepy old corgi. This is another notion that seems to stem from sheer ignorance. Cats «hating» dogs is a cliché, not reality. Sure, some don’t like them, but it’s all situational. The counselor told us that she had fostered the cat and that it hated her «two big dogs». When we inquired about the cat’s potential to be with little dogs, she replied «I have one big one and one small one». LIAR! All the while the woman hugged and kissed the cat, calling her «my baby». Obviously, she was not ready to part with this particular cat.
Like I said, I worked in a pet-​adoption environment before, so I understand being cautious and discerning about potential forever homes, but this place crossed the line with their nonsense. I hope all the cats here eventually find a home, but if you’re considering stopping here, be prepared for a rather frustrating and emotionally taxing adoption process.

I got my cat Pandora from Almost Home! They were friendly, and very compassionate as I had recently lost another to kidney disease. The kittens/​cats at Almost Home were free to run around and play which was awesome! It made picking Pandora the obvious choice as she basically greeted me at the door and didn’t leave my feet the entire time I was there. She’s been in my lap ever since. The process was easy and well priced. I would highly recommend adding these wonderful folks to your list if you’re looking to adopt a kitten or cat!

I came to Almost Home for a kitten shown as adoptable on Petfinder. Walking in the door, I was excited. It was filled with cats who looked quite happy to be there. Even though I was the first person there this morning, the kitten had been adopted the day before. Understandable, and the representative told me she had a brother who would be up for adoption in a few days to a few weeks. I was excited and wanted to start adoption process for him, however was told I couldn’t. They wouldn’t call or email me when he up and I was told I could continue to call, but nothing more could be done. I have volunteered in shelters for years and they always had a policy in place to let interested people know when a foster cat was ready for adoption. It was a frustrating experience on a few levels and I was sad to see that such a well meaning place didn’t have the correct policies in place.

Almost Home Adoptions is a nice little place to adopt a cat. We only visited for a bit. They have a «no kitten for families with kids under 6» policy, which ruled us out. We are responsible pet owners, but that’s their policy which we have to go by. Anyway, they have a lot of cats here. Most of them are allowed to roam around. They had a room with a few kittens, another room for teenage cats, and another room for yet more cats. The cats here are friendly and relaxed. They are perched everywhere, which is interesting.
The woman who greeted us was very friendly and willing to answer any questions we have. I would highly recommend this organization if you’re interested in getting a cat.

You will be hard pressed to find another shelter that comes close to this one. If you are looking for a pet, search here first. Your animal will be much further along than traditional shelters, as all animals are cage free, health permitting.
Not only will you gain a friend for life, you will be helping to ensure the survival of an amazing establishment full of true souls. Keep in mind, this is the shelter that takes in animals that others are going to put down.
Yes, as some stated, the size is nothing near the larger establishments, but the philosophy is nothing close to the larger establishments. This is a no kill shelter, a rarity today.
This place is truly a god send.

It’s been three weeks since my kitten entered my life and I’m pretty damn happy I got her from Almost Home. I’m sure the cage-​free environment, as well as the fact that she was fostered by one of Almost Home’s employees are major factors in how well-​socialized she is. She loves to cuddle (one of her frequently used nicknames is SnuggleSlut), loves to play, and is just the sweetest kitty ever.
The place itself is a bit overwhelming, since it is filled with cats and people. If you go on a weekend, make sure to set aside a couple hours for the process. The prices are decent. We paid $ 150 for our kitten which is slightly more than animal shelters, but she was already spayed and had received all but one vaccination. We also signed a contract that stated we wouldn’t declaw her (which I totally agree with — I would never declaw a cat) so if that’s something you must do, this is not the shelter for you.
The employees really care about the cats — one woman actually teared up when she was saying goodbye to our kitty. To the staff at Almost Home — thank you so much for all you do, and thank you for letting us give our kitty a forever home.

Almost Home Adoptions has great intentions. They’re a cage-​free, no-​kill shelter. The cats get to roam around quite a bit in a number of different rooms, separated out primarily by age. The major issue I had with the place was its size. It is TEENY. Only 1 – 2 people can be in any cat room at a time, and if you make the mistake of visiting them on a weekend (as we did), you wind up feeling pretty claustrophobic in the waiting room. It’s difficult to speak to folks who volunteer there, too, because they’re running around pretty frantically. I’m guessing if you go on a weekday, the experience is entirely different. However, like I said, they’re providing a good service and it’s obvious the people who work there care passionately about the cause. Plus, the cats appear to be pretty darned happy, and that counts for something. The costs are pretty decent, too. Kittens are around $ 150, «teenage» cats are closer to $ 120 – 130, and adults/​seniors are $ 95, and all shots (except rabies) are handled, as is the spay/​neuter.

What a great place! We adopted a new kitty from Almost Home Adoptions (after our 19-​year old cat died of natural causes) and were thrilled by the whole experience. They are a non-​kill shelter that keeps their pets in a cage free environment (whenever medically possible). The spend quite a lot of time socializing the cats so they are ready for a loving environment. I must say, Fred, our new buddy, settled in very well.
