So, so glad I took pretty much every local’s recommendation to go to Hoffman’s during my visit to Westminster — people say it is the best ice cream and they are correct. They have both classic and unique flavors, and my hot fudge brownie sundae with cookie dough ice cream was perfection. Reasonable prices and good service too — I wish I lived closer to this place!

Best ice cream and milkshakes around! You can get them extra thick too. Their ice cream cakes are so good! It’s nice how they have both pints and gallons to take home as well!

The ice cream is fresh, inexpensive, and offered in lots of flavors. Hours are pretty decent, nice treat if you are in the area.

We took an hour long drive from Silver Spring to try the what some say is the best in Maryland. I can’t say I was disappointed. This is your classic, local homemade ice cream shop. They have a variety of flavors and serve them how you like. Cone, cup, milkshake, however you want it. I got mint chocolate in a cake cone, which is my favorite, and a cup of their strawberry cheesecake. You could tell the mint chocolate chip was fresh, it also wasn’t super creamy. The strawberry cheesecake however was pretty creamy and very enjoyable. I’m definitely looking forward to going back and trying some more of there. The customer service was good as well. Possible edit to 5 stars once I try more of the flavors.

Whoa, mama! One of the only ice-cream places on the planet(Main Street Ice Cream, now the Main Cup, in Middletown, MD is the only other one) that carries Orange Pineapple Ice Cream, my grandfather’s favorite. You can get a milkshake, cone, cup… even malt. Plus for true fans, pick up a pint of some Oriole Tracks.

You want to go to a good old style ice cream shop? Then stop by here. Its a convenience store with an ice cream shop attached to it. People are friendly and service is quick. Many patrons will sit outside on the wood retaining wall by the parking lot to eat their ice cream. One nice thing, you cant beat a good ice cream cone on a warm spring evening.

Doesn’t feel like summer until you stand in line at Hoffmans. The best ice cream not in just Westminster, but anywhere that I know of. The best.

I drive up here with my parents a lot from Howard County, it’s an easy pretty drive and the ice cream is traditional and always delicious. I definitely recommend a peanut butter banana shake, deluxe is nice and thick. I usually get a root beer float with comes with more root beer in a can for when it runs low. The portions are generous and the staff is friendly. One time i had a sandwich in the attached deli and it did not disappoint. The only thing i think they are lacking is sundae suggestions or suggested flavor combinations with toppings.

Very good ice cream! Unilocaled to see if there was ice cream in the area I was passing through and came across this gem of a place! I love to check out new places and Hoffman’s did not disappoint. The cake batter ice cream was wonderful and my «go to» ice cream, mint chocolate chip was good as well. The shoppe also sells their ice cream in pint and half gallon sizes. If I am ever passing through Westminster again, this will definitely be on my list to re-visit!!!

Best damn Ice cream I have ever had. I found the place through a close friend, that grew up in westminster. I would drive from downtown dc to Westminster. Just to pick a couple of pints and and shake for the ride home. If you find yourself out in westminster put this on your Unilocal list to check out. Summer is right around the corner. From what I understand they have been a family owned creamery and convenience shop since 1947.

I’m definitely biased since I grew up just down the road from Hoffman’s and worked there for four years, but this is more than just an ice cream shop. It’s a small, family-owned business that has been a staple in Carroll County for over 65 years(established 1947). It’s one of the most reliable businesses in the community, staying open from 9:00AM to 10:00PM March through December, and closing only an hour earlier during January and February. There is also a deli and convenience store attached, which opens at 7:00AM on weekdays and serves a good number of people on their way to work every morning. The ice cream is traditional and accessible. It’s not Cold Stone(different category anyway) and it’s not Ben & Jerry’s with big chunks mixed in, but it’s made from recipes that are time-tested. Classics like black cherry, buttered pecan and peanut butter ripple are always popular, and in the past several years Hoffman’s has added flavors like banana fudge and coconut chocolate chip – new favorites that aren’t too over the top. I take personal responsibility for Ravens Ripple, a pair of flavors that I created in 2010. All 35+ flavors(including homemade sherbet and no fat/no sugar added ice cream) are available in cones, cups, milkshakes/malts, sundaes, floats, banana splits and ice cream cakes. For folks who compare Hoffman’s to Baskin-Robbins: I don’t understand this comparison at all. You can get the Baskin-Robbins stuff anywhere, and it will always taste the same. To me it tastes like it’s been shipped halfway across the country, because it has. It’s not special – it’s just really, really sweet. I would encourage those who regularly buy Baskin-Robbins, Breyers, Edy’s or any other brand name ice cream to try Hoffman’s. It might not be quite as cheap, and it might be a little out of the way, but it’s worth the trip.

Hoffmans has great consistent home made ice cream each and every time I visit, which is around 200+ I am sure my many years of visiting. There is a part of me that gets sour about visiting Hoffmans as it usually was my reward to walk over after my trip to the Doctors office which is right next door. When I walk into Hoffmans it looks and smells just as I remember it when I was a kid, sitting outside with friends after school enjoying a cone. These days things are not as easy going but its always a treat and a great experience when i return to Hoffmans.

We were enjoying the drive from Hunt Valley to Libertytown via beautiful back roads, on a sunny but low-humidity day.(No, this was not a dream. It really did happen in Maryland last week.) My friend began craving ice cream, so I told her to look around for a Baskin Robbins. Instead, the iPhone led us to Hoffman’s. We could tell from the moment we pulled into the parking lot that this was the real deal — a homegrown shop with lots of local loyalty.(Truthfully, after seeing so much Unilocal love here, I feel a little guilty for only giving it three stars!) Tons of families, older couples, even teenagers were enjoying their food outdoors without a trace of angst. The ice cream wasn’t the best I’d ever had, but it was better than a chain, if only because it wasn’t a chain! Mine(chocolate peanut butter and banana) had a lot of icy chunks in it, and my friend’s(cookies & cream) was mostly cream with a few cookies. But rich, sweet and cold, just like you want ice cream to be. We were especially amused by the plethora of signs behind the counter, each of which seems to reflect a previous customer altercation: «ORDERSHAKESFIRST.» «We CANNOT put 2 flavors in ONESCOOP.» «Credit cards for $ 5.00 and above ONLY!» The servers were mostly the aforementioned teenagers, and we asked ours how long the place had been around. She had only worked there a month, she said. Later someone told us it had been built in the 1920’s. Hoffman’s, here’s to your next hundred years!

A clean place. A lovely place. A place filled with incredibly delicious, homemade, old-school ice cream. Scores of flavors(from the standards to Strawberry Cheesecake, Orange Pineapple — in the summer — and Peppermint — winter), and sherbet, too. Frozen yogurt, though I don’t think it’s made in-house, but so what — it’s tasty. Thick and frosty milkshakes. Ice cream cakes! Sundaes! Floats! MALTS. Handmade ice cream sandwiches. AND A DELI. I swear, we almost fainted upon arrival. We had an entire bag of ice cream sandwiches, the round ones with the scalloped edges, strawberry, cookie dough, vanilla, chocolate, mint chocolate chip, and maybe something else but I for one was too busy putting things into my mouth and making happy noises to remember little details like, was that a fruit taste or a fudge taste? I don’t get down to Maryland as much as I’d like. Hoffman’s is one of the best reasons to visit!
