earlier in the day, an out of town guest and i enjoyed a memorable lunch at the blind pig in butchertown so i was hopeful that lightening would strike twice when we headed up highway 42 and out to westport, kentucky for an evening of locally sourced food and music by the kittly slickers. my friend will crawford and his wife ruth have owned the westport general store for a little while now and i have been hearing that it is worth the drive out into oldham county. the place is not swanky, in fact it’s very homey and casual with mis-matched furniture, wonderful low lighting and some pretty outstanding acoustics. i personally have a hard time enjoying myself at really noisy restaurants and find i am seeking out quieter spaces. my friend commented more than once how nice it was for us to be able to chat while the kitty slickers played. we started with an order of fried green tomatoes which were crispy on the outside and tender and slighty acidic on the inside. we both ordered the special which was a pork chop from a local farm on top of smashed yukon golds, surrounded by gently sauteed squash, zucchini and bell peppers and topped with a fresh fruit salsa. other than being a tiny bit tough, my pork chop was out of this world and seasoned to perfection. the portion was more than generous and despite a nearly full to capacity tummy, i did promise myself dessert after turning down the offerings at the blind pig. i had ruth crawford’s blackberry cobbler with vanilla icecream. the cobbler assembly was unlike any i’ve ever had before. it was almost like a really big, really wonderful jam bar. my friend had a bite of mine, which i was admittedly and selfishly reluctant to share. she then ordered some to take home. it was so wonderful getting to reconnect with will and meet ruth. i look forward to many more dinners in westport.
