The Cove is usually very beautiful, surrounded by old homes, a nice bit of parkland, and has personal watercraft anchored in the water. There are town fields for soccer and T-ball next to it and the Farmer’s Market is nearby. The large parking lot usually has people relaxing during their lunch breaks in their cars and enjoying the sunshine and scenery. During the winter there are ice fishers out on the ice trying to catch a bite. Sounds great right? Then why only three stars? Well, the water filtration plant is just upriver from the Cove and has polluted it heavily over the years with sewage. Typically this isn’t a huge issue, although you’d have to be insane to swim in it, but heavy rains make the Cove and a good portion of Old Wethersfield smell like straight feces. The worst is a day of flooding followed by a day of extreme heat. Urgh. I wish they’d clean it up, it’d be a great little local lake instead of the occasional cesspool it is now.

Yes, there is a Yacht Club in Wethersfield, where you can sail your yacht in the Wethersfield Cove. Wethersfield Cove you say? Yes, in the Old Wethersfield part of town, you’ll find the Wethersfield Cove and Cove Park. The Cove is a small bay connected to the Connecticut River by a tiny sliver of water known as Folly Brook. Back in the day, Wethersfield saw a lot of shipping commerce in lumber, grain, onions, meats and fish going to the Caribbean in exchange for salt, sugar, molasses and rum. Today the Cove is a very nice place to walk around, see the sights, and maybe see a boat or two. The adjacent park has jogging trails and a huge meadow that today served as the starting point for the Old Wethersfield 5K and 10K race. It’s a very pretty place in a very unexpected location.
