Generous portions on all the dishes. Fish tacos were amazing. Tender and super juicy with lots of flavor. Stuffed fried avocado with shrimp was delicious. Table side guacamole was good but avocados were not fully ripe so the richness of the avocado was lacking. Margaritas were inexpensive and if you come on Monday or Tuesday its only $ 1.99 or before 4pm the rest of the week. $ 5.99 is the regular price. We will be back!

The food overall was mediocre. The salsa and chips were good but different. I’m not used to an avocado based salsa which was very good. The other salsa was a traditional tomato salsa but is served warm. The service was ok. They all seemed like they’d rather be somewhere else and where just going through the motions. The place was very clean and a great view of the Colorado river.

Just got to town & went here my first night. It was so good, I went back the second night too! Now I have plenty of leftovers for my third night in town. All the food(and cactus margaritas) I & my friends had was delicious! And the service was great too.

Muy Bueno! Coming from San Antonio we eat a lot of Mexican food and it’s without a doubt my favorite overall food category but I sure was not expecting this place to be so incredible! We had a big lunch in Houston and were intentionally driving the back roads home when we stumbled on this place. We wanted something light so we shared the Fish Cancun and it was nothing short of awesome. I had ordered a single ala carte beef fajita enchilada so I was expecting a bland simple enchilada, but I was very pleasantly surprised when I bit into it. The steak was sauteed in a delicious mole sauce. Even their boracho beans were excellent and clearly home made as well as the tortillas. A few of the others ahead of us here left somewhat disparaging remarks about the service but we had excellent service and our dinner was on our table within ten minutes. It was about 7:30 on a Saturday night and the parking lot was packed so probably fairly representative of their normal crowded nights. By the way if you look closer at one of the guys who left some of the negative comments you’ll see he’s a bookworm from Wichita so I’ll let you judge the value of his reviews of a Texas Mexican restaurant for yourself… As for my suggestion, pull on in and dive in. You won’t regret it.

Worst service I’ve ever experienced. Never order catering. They can never get any order right.

Met my mom half way between Houston and where she lives to take her for a Mother’s Day casual lunch. The restaurant sits on The Colorado River with some tables over looking. Pros– The food portions are HUGE! And lots to choose from. Cons — not clean at all. If you are busy I’d suggest having one of the many staff members clean the floors often. We even had a drink come out and the glass had food stuck on it. I would be so afraid to go to the restroom here if they can’t even keep the visible floors clean. I know it was Mother’s Day and it was busy, but my mom and I had to shout across the table to hear each other. Would I go back? Maybe, but they’ve got to do something with the filth and I’d go on a non holiday.

Absolutely love Los Cucos! Worked in and around Wharton for many years and always a treat to eat there. Actually so much they always knew my drink order! The staff very attentive and cordial. Great food and the best Spanish rice anywhere!

My family travels all over and this is some of the best food we’ve had. It’s got a nice atmosphere and excellent views of the river too.

I just moved here and ate here for both lunch and dinner on the same day. That being said, I had two very different experiences! Lunch was with my Aunt and my 9 month old son. We were seated by the huge windows overlooking the Colorado river and the beautiful trees. It was way slow, right about 11:15am. Out of all of their high chairs in the whole restaurant, none of them had clips that worked on the straps. Ugh. The high chairs with caked with years-old grease, as were the floors. Elbert was our waiter and didn’t come around near often enough. We wait over 35 minutes for our food– I had the fish cancun(white fish cooked in butter sauce topped with shrimp and scallops. A-mazing) and my Aunt had the fish tacos. My aunt said hers was good and mine was SO great. We finished eating and waited for Elbert to come back by. He finally came by and took our plates. I had to flag him down 10 minutes later to bring our check– I found that odd; we were obviously finished eating, and the baby was getting cranky, why not bring the check when you clear the plates? We were there over an hour, and I don’t think that’s right when there’s only 2 other tables there when we came in. That evening I went back with my husband and baby. The hostess was busy taking a phone order and then ran to the kitchen to drop off the order. No biggie. She seats us and then walks off! Didn’t offer to get a high chair, booster or anything! Thanks to lunch I knew where they were and got one and carried it back to my table, making eye contact with her as I passed her. John was our waiter and he was absolutely phenomenal! Very personable, very caring, and really knew his stuff. I inquired to the long lunch wait times and he said it just depended what was going on in the kitchen but my earlier experience didn’t sound normal. The baby was fussy and I asked him for a small plate of rice even before we placed drink orders and he brought it back immediately– in under 30 seconds. Awesome! I ordered the fish cancun again because it was so good at lunch. It was just as good at dinner– so good! My husband ordered the El Rey plate. He liked his food, except the taco was a bit too spicy for a normal taco. I tried it and I agreed. The meat mix certainly had a kick to it. Our food only took 10 minutes to come out for the supper service and the restaurant was packed! That’s a complete 180 from lunch. I highly recommend the Cancun plate, but if you are there it seems to be a crapshoot on waitstaff. Ask for John– he will certainly take care of you!

Every time I come to Wharton I try to eat here. The food is fantastic and if you are lucky enough to get a window booth you can get a great view of the Colorado River! You will not be disappointed dining here.

Contrary to what one of the reviewers said, this isn’t the original Los Cucos. That’s actually in west Houston off the Katy Freeway. That said as far as I’m concerned, this particular location is the weakest of the chain that I’ve visited so far. The high point for this place is the view, as the restaurant is perched above the Colorado River. Service, as well as the quality of the food, pales compared to their other locations I’ve visited in Houston, Rosenberg, and even nearby El Campo. I’ve been to this location several times, and each time I can guarantee at least one item that I order will be overly watery. Sometimes it’s the salsa but most others it seems to be due to the garnish that’s placed with so many of the restaurant’s entrees. The other locations seem to square this away by placing it near either rice or beans which create a barrier of sorts, but this one… I guess the dam breaks sometimes! In addition, I’ve never not waited at least a half-hour for my entrée to arrive at my table. I generally visit off peak hours, so it’s pretty remarkable that they can be that slow for their, at times, sole customer. If you really want Los Cucos, definitely check out the one just down the road in El Campo. The food seems to be more flavorful and service is generally quicker.

We’ve been here several times and we’ve always had a long wait and sub-par food. Drive 20 miles up the road to El Campo. That Los Cucos and is much better!

Los Cucos is a very charming restaurant with an excellent view of the Colorado River. The food is good and the portions are satisfying. I often get the shrimp fajitas.

This place was so so. I’m not a fan of waiting for my food and it took the waiter 15 minutes from when we sat down till they came to get drinks and bring salsa. Then it was a 30 minute it wait for a party of four for food. Mother than that the food was bland.

My wife says they make the best enchiladas here. She is an enchilada expert. So there. I like the fajita quesadillas, and there is this deep fried avocado, well it is delicious.

The original Los Cucos! I am from San Antonio and our Los Cucos locations do not compare to this one. I had the green enchiladas, what a surprise I know. They were great! The green sauce was great and the chicken was perfectly cooked. The rice had a different flavor to it but I still liked it. The only complaint I had was my server was a bit off but he was young so I will forgive him and the place. Check out the original Los Cucos next time you are in exciting Wharton!

First of all, I’m not from this area, so I actually didn’t even realize this was a chain until I did a little research online. As far as the service goes, while the waitstaff was very nice, the food came out very slowly. We had a party of 9 and waited about 30 – 45 minutes for our food after ordering simple dishes. The salsa that we snacked on during that wait was okay, but their tomatillo/green sauce was actually pretty tasty. Others in my group ordered enchiladas, fajitas, etc., which they all said were all right, but I ordered the fish tacos, which were not very good at all. The fish itself was burned to a crisp on one side and had failed to be seasoned on the other. There was no type of sauce for me to put on the tacos, which turned out to be okay anyway since the corn tortillas they used were still dripping in grease and fell apart as soon as I touched them. The beans were dry, as was the rice, and the margaritas had very little tequila in them. I would suggest ordering a couple of beers and filling up on the chips and salsa, perhaps ordering the shrimp nachos– you’ll save some cash and have a better meal that way.
