Wheaton Ice Arena

Its a nice rink. Historically a hockey rink not a figure skating rink. Convenient for people in the local neighborhoods. Wonderfully updated in the 1990’s when, before, it was an outdoor seasonal rink.

The lessons here were fun and the staff is nice. The rink is not as crowded as Cabin John and the skaters are more polite during public skating. I would drive an extra few miles to this rink to avoid the Cabin John crowd.

Horrible painful skates. I did one lap and couldn’t walk and then went to get my money back. Do not rent here. Also, they didn’t have anything for kids to hold onto. Terrible experience, just as I remember it. Go to Silver Spring instead.

The bottom line is that if you’re looking for a nice public skate in Montgomery County, this is an excellent option.
This facility has great, NHL-​size ice. It’s well-​maintained and has great staff. The building doesn’t feel too old, and the atmosphere feels nice and fresh. I was able to go in and get summer skate admission (pretty sure this comes with skate rental) for only 5 dollars, and paid $ 0.50 for a small locker for my personal belongings.
One thing that’s nice is the ample public skate opportunities throughout the month. Most rinks that I’ve checked do not have such frequent opportunities for the public to skate. It’s also cool to note that Montgomery County Parks has a strong relationship with this facility and offers many classes for both children and adults toward developing skills in ice skating and hockey. I’ll be taking a class soon and I’m looking forward to working with their staff.
At the rink you can also visit a snack shop, the pro shop (where they sell equipment), and there’s ample room to sit from the bleachers if you want to watch your child during their session. After the skate, you can explore the surroundings, as the rink is surrounded by very large fields and tennis courts.
Overall, I didn’t experience many downsides to this location. I’m going to keep going back and I’ll write if anything rubs me the wrong way. However, it seems like this location is stellar.
