Highland Tropical Fish & Bird Haven

I believe the staff member I came in contact with was Emily. I called in advance to ask if the birds were sociable and friendly, she told me yes.
I drove an hour to this store and they weren’t friendly at all, they all seemed scared.
Then the staff member proceeded to be very rude to me. Even the people I was with asked me why she was being so rude to me.
If I could give 0 stars I would.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect, but I was impressed before I got inside.
From the window, you could see that the bird section of the building was clean. Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve noticed that lots of pet stores seem to have obscured windows, like there’s something to hide. Not here, though.
I didn’t come for birds, though. I came aquarium shopping. The selection of fish is pretty incredible, as far as tropical fish go. I liked that in all but one of the vast selection of tanks, I only noticed one fish that seemed to be nearing the end of its life.
I hadn’t planned on needing any help, and the guy there did a commendable job of leaving me alone while I was browsing, and instinctively knew when I had a question about something. The question became a series of questions, and he took the time to show me all sorts of things in the store. You really don’t see that kind of service.
On my way home, I decided to drop by the nearest Meijer, just to do a comparison (it’s been years since I’ve had an aquarium, so I’m not current on pricing) and I was really surprised to find that the prices here are as good or better.
I came back a couple of days later, to discover three different employees. I’m reasonably sure two of them were owners, and all of them were totally helpful and nice.

Half the business is a bird store and half of the business is a fresh water fish store. The business has stood the test of time as it has been there for years. You can bring your water in to have it tested, just keep an eye on your kid if he has the water, as I literally saw a child drinking aquarium water from a ziplock. They also sell live plants. They also carry aquariums and bird cages. If you are going on vacation, they will board your birds.

Disappointed. All the fish tanks with fish in it had fake foilage. There were several tanks which were clearly too small for the size and/​or number of fish in them. Staff seemed friendly though.

Very friendly and knowledgeable staff /​Great freshwater selection I’ve been looking all over the area for a good LFS and this is it. They have a very good selection of cichlids, from SA/​CA to Africans. Anything they don’t have they seem to be very open to order in for you. The fish look to be in great quality, and I noticed an adult male venustus that was expensive but beautiful. They are not to pricey compared to most places only thing that is alittle pricey is the adult fish but that is normal. They are a great LFS for any cichlid lover in the area. Any time you’re in there talk to Bob, he’s been very friendly and knowledgeable. and always helped me out with any questions I had.

Long-​time customer. Many years… literally. They know what they are talking about, and are super helpful. I have recommended them enthusiastically over the years to friends, and will continue to do so. Keep up the good work. I have always shopped on the ‘wet’ side of the store, not a bird owner, but I’m sure they’re just as conscientious with the feathered friends as well!

My husband has gone here for years. Now my son goes with dad and this is the «only» place we are allowed to purchase fish due to quality of fish and service.

I’ve been a happy customer of Highland Tropical for years. We have an umbrella cockatoo that was born there and they offer a boarding service for parrots that can truly be relied upon. One side of the store is birds and supplies and the other specializes in fish, lizards and various other slithering pets. I have come to rely upon their excellent care and advice-​as an owner of two cockatoos, I would go nowhere else. Whatever your interests or questions these people are experts.
