I’m a relatively, newborn convert to Martial Arts… For the past 20 years or so, I wanted to try any form of Martial Arts, but I was either shy or was not motivated. Fast forward 23 years, and I had to come out of my shell one way or another. And so, I continue my steady voyage to incorporate new and interesting activities to do in the New Year… Grandmaster B. M. Kim’s Tae Kwon Do program, had a special going on for a grand total of $ 20 which includes: 4 classes and a uniform. Not bad to try it out! Grandmaster Kim’s school is located less than 10 minutes from home. One night, I inquired and spoke to Yolanda(the manager?) who was very sweet and detailed and signed me up for the 4 classes. Because I was pressed for time, I didn’t get into the logistics of the program. Yet, I signed up for my classes-anyway. I was hyped and attended my first class, and it was something my body wasn’t used to. Everyone was welcoming even the Grandmaster himself! James, the Grandmaster’s assistant, gave me all his personal attention and instructions. He drilled me left and right in some of the katas. I absolutely and totally love the exercise aspect of Tae kwon do, and I was sweating buckets. After my class, Yolanda and I sat down and talked business. I explained to her, that I was nowhere interested in doing Bruce Lee moves and start breaking boards until I turned blue– and to put it simply, that was not part of MY agenda. Yet, Yolanda began to sell me the program and tell me, that it would be nice to move up in rank.(What part did she not get?). Again, I repeated myself, and reiterated that I had no desire in breaking planks and getting the many colors of the rainbow on my belt. The kicker of the night was when she talked to me about the dollar amount and said that for the year, it’ll cost me $ 2200 with a $ 150 Registration Fee. What the fu*k? I seriously, didn’t dance around the issue. And nor did I whip out unicorns and fairies and give her false hope. However, what I did end up telling her was that I was going to go home and think about it, because in all honesty, this is an expense that is very outrageous-while other schools and prices are way more reasonably priced and not freaking $ 2200! Aside from the large monthly fee for JUST Tae kwon do, I particularly didn’t like the rigidness of the class. And although customer service was pleasant, I will not include the outrageous prices of this school, in my monthly budget.
