If your going to visit us, please check this out, day or night. If your looking for a great date night suggestion that works to. During the day you can stroll around the river, check out the hidden troll. Then at night you can wait till 9 pm and experience a wonderful fire lit around the Indian. One of the best places to go in town for a great relaxing time.

Super cool monument. There is information all around the plaza about Native American life. If you go to the side by the Museum there is an auditory walk through of the plaza. Quick thing to go see if you need to waste a little bit of time!

If you’re visiting Wichita, you must see Keeper of the Plains. This structure is a steel sculpture gifted to the City of Wichita by Blackbear Bosin. And like any gift, you want to take good care of it, which is exactly what the City of Wichita has done with Keeper of the Plains. Huge hats off for the Wichita Parks and Rec department because the surrounding areas were beautifully maintained. Everything was pristine, green, and clean! I parked by the bridge crossing the Big Arkansas River and made my way across to the plaza itself. Once you enter the plaza, there’s informational boards on history of Native Americans in the area. They even had light drum music playing, which was a touch schmaltzy but definitely contributed to the ambiance. You can walk around underneath the Keeper, which is also how I presume Parks and Rec staff are able to light the fire basins at the nightly joining of the 4 elements: earth(the park), air(duh), water(the confluence of the Arkansas Rivers), and fire(provided by P&R). I was there during the afternoon and couldn’t stay for the lighting, which happens at 9pm during the summer. Wintertime lighting is at 7pm. Be sure to walk on to the bridge that crosses the Little Arkansas River. You get a great view of the rivers’ confluence and a different angle on the Keeper. One thing to note is that Keeper of the Plains is in walking distance of several hotels that are along the river. The paths are clean and clearly-marked, so if you’re staying in Wichita, take a walk down the river and enjoy the sight! Thank you, Blackbear Bosin, for this sculpture. Although I was an out-of-towner, I am very grateful to have seen such an excellent structure that has been clearly left in good hands.

Great place to visit. Wichita is a clean and well-maintained city. This area is no different. The bridge is beautifully designed. The Keeper of the Plains tells the rich history of the Indians in this area. Stay for the fire show @ 9! It is relaxing to walk this area and take in all the landscape!

I live right here, I didn’t know this was a check in place. Sheer beauty is all I have to say. I enjoy walks on this bridge and the fire, the water, the trees. I still have lots to learn about this area in wichita.

The Keeper of the Plains status is remarkable and worth visiting at least once. To get to the statue, you just take a relaxing walk down the river. The place where the statue is stationed consists of a lot of rocks you can climb– a noteworthy place to take pictures. I would definitely come here again to see the statue and hopefully see the flames turn on in the evening.

The Keeper is a signature of Wichita and it’s on the Arkansas River running, biking, walking trail. Right at the confluence of the Little and Big Arkansas Rivers. Nice statue that is also impressive at night(it gets lit after 9pm in summer, 7pm other times). Gret place to walk around in nice weather.

What a lovely statue on the rivers, that has such wonderful displays concerning the history of the plains and the statue. Come and experience this one, especially about 9 when the light it off!

When I grew up in Wichita, the Keeper was a statue on the river that was very cool but didn’t have a dramatic presence in the city of Wichita. It was a symbol… but not as strong as it could be. Today, it has become a gorgeous piece of our downtown thanks to the creation of the park and walking bridges from either side of the rivers. The Keeper is a Native American Warrior, part of the All-American Indian Center located just down the road. The location of the statue is sacred and the meeting place of the Big and Little Arkansas(pronounced«ARE — KANSAS»…not«ARE — KAN — SAW»). Foot bridges from either side are an awesome addition and a gorgeous place to sit and stare down the river at the Wichita skyline. The park has some great pieces that teach about the history of the area and the Native American heritage as well as a path down to the foot of the statue and the fork of the river. At night there is a fire show, you can ride your bike there along the riverwalk path, and it is walking distance from Exploration Place. It is a learning experience and our city’s icon, our St. Louis Arch if you will. It is a peaceful place everyone should visit in Wichita and always a destination when I have guests in town or when my son and I are kicking around on a weekend.
