A fantastic little place that takes over at night. It’s a surprise that more people don’t frequent the place. Seating for a few people is at the counter with no tables. Another bonus, the place is BYOB. It worked bringing some Cigar City Jai Alai as the citrusy hops and malt balance work well with the spice and heat of Indian food. The bitterness does accentuate the heat though. The chicken biryani has a wonderful density of spice familiar with Indian food, but also the bright additions of fried onions, garlic, leafy herbs, and citrus. Be sure to order some hot sauce on the side, as it offers another layer spice.

I’ve been wanting to try this for awhile ever since reading the NYT review. Never tried Saltie before but this is their after hours/weekend popup. Decided to finally swing by last Friday and I’m glad I did. Menu is limited which makes things easy for indecisive peeps like me. I went with the meatballs which are served on a bed of rice and some really yummy garnishes like green onions roasted shallots(I think) and pickled something. There’s not description on the menu so I had to guess. These really made the dish. Food came out SUPER fast because it’s already prepared. Deducting a star because I wish there was some kind of sauce with the meatballs like a curry. I also got the naan, which tasted more like a paratha. It was good, but since there was no sauce with the curry, didn’t really have a use for it. Remember — cash only. There’s an ATM if you forget. I took mine to go because I live nearby but there was plenty of seating along the wall on a Friday night.

Mr. Curry is for true foodies — forget about ambiance(although I do like the bright and welcoming space — I live nearby but frequently eat there) — focus on the food. It is consistently fresh and incredibly tasty; they are masters with spices. I’ve also had a few of their specials, including the roasted eggplant, and the meatball naan sandwich(awesome). The chicken buriyani is also fantastic. The peach lassi was also maybe the best lassi I’ve ever had. The space is simple and unpretentious. The staff are also unpretentious, helpful, and totally awesome. So are the prices, which are excellent for the quality of the food. You can also finish the meal with one of the best pastries in the neighborhood. I think these are the same as Saltie’s. In any case, they are amazing — the galette has incredibly thin and light pastry crust and the fruit inside is always the perfect amount sweet to really bring out the flavor of the fruit. The crumb cake is also incredible; the cake is moist and the crumble has a strong vanilla flavor that is addictive. Again, this place is about flavor and quality. If you’re a real foodie, you will love this place. The focus is on the flavors and freshness. I wish more eateries were nearly as high in quality of food and taste as this place.

Mr. Curry is magic. Everything is delicious, and the menu is constantly changing. The only thing that doesn’t change is that it’s delicious.

This is not about the cash only inconvenience, the rigid counter stools or the(perhaps) intentionally vague and laconic menu. This review is about the food, and the food most certainly delivers. I can only comment on the vegetable curry with tomato chutney and hot sauce. I’m enamored with curries of all types — Japanese, Thai: red, yellow, massaman, Indian, Pakistani, Burmese, Sri Lankan — but it’s because of those muddled and complex flavors that I find curries so enjoyable. This curry was indeed thoroughly complex, but it was at the same time uniquely vibrant with distinct and creative flavor combinations that literally pop in your mouth. Sometimes you stumble across food that excites your taste buds to such a degree that each bite is more than just enjoyable and delicious — the very act of eating it is fun. This was fun eating through and through and I will most certainly go back to sample more from the menu. Tip: BYOB so grab a tasty, cold IPA(you can buy individual bottles) from the bodega across the street to pair with the spice!

Saltie is one of my favorite restaurants in the city and this is also true for their evening iteration. This is some amazing Indian — everything is amazingly flavored but unlike most Indian food everything is bright and fresh. They put these delectable pickled vegetables all over the place. The meatballs are lovely and the vegetable dish is really good too. One day they had a kohlrabi special and I’m still dreaming about it. Really good place for an excellent and well priced weekend meal.

Saltie chefs Rebecca Collerton and Caroline Fidanza have a new curry night menu under a different name, Mr. Curry. Flavorful, Indian inspired dishes with local, organic vegetables. I had the pickles and rice which has all sorts of pickled vegetables plus flavorful rice, as well as the vegetable curry which had beautiful local, seasonal vegetables and herbs combined with a curry sauce and rice. The lassi, yogurt sauce, green sauce, and naan were also all nice accompaniments.
