This place should be renamed House of Bland. Our food was overcooked and the sauces were thick. Wish the Pine Yard would re-open.

I’m bumping this up a bit because I think this place is underrated. I was getting tired of our usual mediocre go-to Chinese down the street – Tsing Tao and thought I’d try House of Chan. When I walked in, I was almost afraid to pick up my food. The interior looks like it hasn’t been touched since about 1965; my first instinct was that I hope they maintain the food and kitchen better than the décor. This is not a place you are going to want to hang out waiting for your food to finish cooking. The man who took my money must have been the cook and was very friendly and happy smiley in a contagious way. I had ordered hot and sour soup and their take on general tso chicken. First the chicken tasted really bland, as other reviewers mentioned. Then I generously sprinkled on some crushed red pepper, and problem fixed – it went from boring to delicious! It’s the kind that’s no longer crunchy by the time you eat it, if it ever was. Though that’s not necessarily bad. Upon opening the lid of my hot and sour soup, I was so excited to smell the unmistakable scent of vinegar. Why the hell does practically every place else in Chicago omit this key ingredient from hot and sour soup? The recipe is practically there in the title for you! Where do you think the sour comes from if you don’t add any vinegar? Skittles? At House of Chan, the soup seems like it’s made with a base of corn starch, water, and salt. Here it was a lot more balanced and less gelatinous. I could have used some pork slices in there, but I was just so thrilled not to have to dig out my white vinegar jug that it’s not worth complaining about. All in all I’ll definitely be back.

The egg rolls are amazing, as are the pot stickers and chicken chow mein. If you want ‘old school’ Chinese food this is your place

All the shrimp, chicken, pork, and beef dishes I’ve had here have been good.

The food was completely average, the spicy orange chicken was not spicy. The egg roll with the lunch special was very small and barely resembled an egg roll. The biggest disappointment was the crab Rangoon. THEREWASNOFILLINGATALL. Just wonton. I threw it all out. Never again.

I created a rule that if we went out anytime this week we have to eat or get food from somewhere we’ve never been. Enter House of Chan for takeout. They gave us one too many food items, which would have been okay if the food had been good. Servings were huge, which would have been great if the food had been good. Everything was very thick in an unflavorful way, like a lot of corn starch was used. Curry shouldn’t be thick… or breaded. The mongolian beef tasted really soft, like it wasn’t beef. Hmmm. The orange chicken and the sesame chicken(one was the redundant order) both had an odd flavor, like wet dog. Not the direction we were looking to go with that. The crab rangoons had the tiniest bit of filling, some had no filling. The pot stickers were the best thing we got and I’d give those 2-stars. Owners seemed very nice so I feel badly being honest but it was really the worst meal we’ve had all year.

We had a great experience here. I called on Saturday night around 7:30 and placed an order for General Tso’s chicken, chicken fried rice and moo shu pork. They hung up without giving more than a subtle affirmation that they understood my order. I didn’t know what to expect. 15 minutes later my doorbell rang and the food was absolutely delicious. I’m going to be a repeat customer.

Well… The place is pretty good if you order certain items like egg foo young, pot stickers, and various soups. The governors chicken is okay too. The egg rolls leave much to desire… The people working and taking orders are the nicest.

I love to carry out from the House of Chan, and I think it’s because even after you carry it away, the food is still super hot when you get home. And they are so fast you can order and get the food on your table in the time they are getting around to the water someplace else. I have never had anything bad from here, but I am not even sure that the food is so great. It always seems great at the time, however. On the other hand, I am pretty fussy and I have no complaints. I particularly like the lunch carry out, but it’s really all good.

definitely not a place to dress up for. it’s mostly take out, but my owner knows my mom, and we sometimes eat at one of their three small tables. lunch is a bargain. five dollars for numerous entrees, fried rice, and an egg roll. my favorite is the garlic chicken, curry beef, and kung pao beef. also try the chicken noodle soup. the chicken is sooo tender, just melts in your mouth. the soup broth is so good, definitely a hangover soup. also, be sure to add a little bit of the chili oil. great little place, super friendly owner.

I don’t have high expectations from carryout-only Chinese, especially when it is located close to my work. But I cannot understand the good ratings for this place. I ordered the house combination chow mein, which meant I got to taste quite a few of the basic ingredients. The dish was ruined by shrimp that were at least a couple of days past their prime. But the cooking oil also didn’t taste fresh, and the beef was of a low quality. This dish also reinforced the principle that the quality of Chinese food is inversely proportional to the quantity of sliced celery and canned water chestnuts used as ingredients. About the only thing palatable in the dish was the chicken, so if you have to eat here, maybe order the lemon chicken endorsed by another reviewer. Usually with even mediocre Chinese food, I can look forward to having a meal for the next day. But the shrimp in this dish made even that unappealing.

Our garlic chicken lacked flavor and the chicken was very chewy. The egg rolls were VERY greasy and over-fried — very unappetizing. Outdated atmosphere had me hoping for some authentic charm but the food unfortunately didn’t deliver. However staff was friendly, prices were cheap, portions were generous, and our food was ready in 5 minutes flat. Would likely not go back.

They have this lemon chicken dish which is excellent and cheap! I absolutely love love love this place. I use to come here for lunch once a week and I always had leftovers.

We didn’t realise that this place was take-out only when we came in here after the movies on Christmas. However, they were kind enough to serve us anyway, with real plates, silverware and everything! I loved my chicken eight delight, lots of tasty vegetables, although the chicken in garlic sauce that some friends got was very very garlicky and intense. Overall, just props for niceness and ignoring our obvious stupidity.

My absolute favorite chinese restaurant locally. Their food is definitely on the low price range, and the portions are huge. Every entrée comes with a side of rice, so you’re good to go on that front. My personal favorite is the Curry chicken. It’s absolutely delicious fresh and hot, and the next day I mix my leftovers with stovetop Ramen. It’s absolutely the perfect usage of leftover chinese. My family always picks House of Chan when we want take out.
