High Falls Gorge

Great experience, awesome views, felt like we were walking in a water fall, first time we walked through it was a bit scary, the second time through we were old pros and felt more relaxed and enjoyed it even more, you can walk through as many times as you like plus they have an additional hiking trail. People who work there are very nice and as for some of the other reviews here that bitch about the entry fee… puhlease…bunch of cheapskates… from our point of view worth the price of admission. Take your time, don’t rush through! A must visit for vacationers!

High Falls Gorge was our first stop after a five hour drive. I didn’t really mind the $ 11 fee, there are some great photo ops and I think it’s worth the money if you also do the nature trail as well. The only problem is the walk is only as nice as the people around you allow it to be. Most are inconsiderate and want to stand on the small lookout taking 100s of picture of the waterfall. You kind of have to muscle your way in. The biggest selling point is the small café. I was worried when I realized the size of it, 6 tables, one waitress. But the food was delicious! My burger was perfectly cooked, the pulled pork special was outstanding. Fries were hot and crispy. I would stay away from the pizza though, seemed like one of those frozen or ready made pizzas. It’s definetly a good landing spot for a family that is looking to stretch their legs and grap a bite to eat after a long drive.

Not friendly and do not allow dogs. It’s weird to have such a beautiful place privately owned. Not sure I ethically agree with this place.

Pretty expensive for this short hike… Apparently there are places where you pay to hike. Great choice if you have older people with you who can’t do traditional hike (though there are stairs). Beautiful views.

Great views however a bit pricy at 11:00 a person for a 15 – 20 minute walk. I would say go once than you can say you saw it. But no return visit fir that price

Why waste money over a very ordinary waterfall. It’s 10.25 for seeing a small area when more beautiful places are available for free

This place was pretty cool. The waterfalls were amazing and the boardwalk to get around was super cool too. I felt like a little kid running up and down the stairs to have my mom take pictures of me from different bridges around the falls. There is also a nature trail that you can do separately (with no views of the fall) but is a nice little hike to get your monies worth. My parents aren’t really in shape and were able to manage the 1-​mile walk around the falls that had a number of stairs (they do have benches for you to rest on in some places). Entrance for an adult is $ 11.25 plus tax, but it’s worth doing at least once while you’re in the lake Placid area. There is a nice little gift shop and café inside and a little wood burning stove for the colder months. They also have snowshoes to use while you’re hiking around in the snow but I don’t know if you have to pay extra for them because I was there in August and obviously didn’t need them.
Overall, these falls were really pretty and it was a pretty cool experience. It has beautiful falls and neat bridges. If you go while it’s raining, you’ll pretty much have the place to yourself: otherwise, I would assume it gets pretty crowded.

High Falls Gorge is, by far, the most beautiful natural attraction in the Adirondack Park. Nestled at the base of Little Whiteface, the 700 feet of Waterfalls provide a picturesque backdrop for an outing when you are visiting the High Peaks. The gift shop and restaurant offer a variety of choices in both souvenirs and refreshments that will complement your visit.

If you want to see some cool waterfalls and dramatic rock formations up close, this is your place. The views at High Falls Gorge are stunning and it’s truly amazing to think about how the falls have changed the landscape over time. The raised walkway along the falls is really cool and a very easy walk for people of all ages and abilities.
That being said, a common point mentioned in the reviews here is the elevated price of admission — but that’s the beauty in owning fantastic private property and making a business out of it, I guess!

If you are debating between HFG & Ausable Chasm — go for the latter. HFG is good for a family outing, but if you hike around Adirondacks, you will see many such beautiful falls without paying the $ 11 entrance fee.
Having said that, we had a perfectly pleasant 1.5 hour outing, meandering around the walkways of HFG and getting some nice summer pics ;) Visited the Ausable Chasm last year and it is definitely more fun, has better walkways and the mile long rafting experience gets my thumbs up. HFG is great for young kids and families visiting with elderly parents/​grandparents.

This place was definitely out of this world. The views were breathtaking! The beautiful waterfalls, river, trees, & trails made this a more than a pleasant experience. The site is very well maintained. I would definitely recommend anybody to come by and enjoy the beauty of Mother Nature! I will definitely be coming back!

Be sure to arrive 45 minutes before the last tour even though they advertise that you can tour up till 4:30. We arrived before 4:30 and they turned us away… again even though the sign says last tour 4:30. My review is more on the integrity of the business rather than the activity itself, since we were denied.

It’s interesting that two such beautiful gorges as Ausable Chasm and High Falls Gorge are privately owned. But even though it costs you a bit to get in it’s worth it. This is beautiful country, and this is a spectacular chasm, well worth the walk.
What I do commend them for as a privately owned facility is the fact that the trails and fencing is so well maintained. Much better than the facilities in a standard state park so I guess that helps justify the admission fee.
It’s really a quick drive down the road if you’re staying in Lake Placid as we were and only a short distance from Whiteface if you’re there in the off season. A good way to spend an hour.

Ooooo, ahhhh! its pretty!

Went here towards the end of summer. Was interesting and the falls were very cool. The kids loved it. Although I would agree that it did seem a little pricey. However after Hurticane Irene they weren’t sure if they would recover I’m glad to see that they did. I found the gift shop stereotypical and was not impressed. It was late in the day so we didn’t try the food.

If I were thinking of jumping off a cliff or bridge or anyplace, I would do it here. Wholly heights batman. Besides that and the 11 dollars to take a tour of this place, I would say this is probably one of the most romantic spots. Seriously, if you were to propose to your significant other, do it here, as your getting sprayed by water falling off the gorge and you’ll have stories to tell your children and grandchildren forever. While I did not experience such romantic things there, I will still be going back, and this experience will now where I go to find my happy place.
They have a store and bathrooms, as the falls will make you have to go really really bad. Running water. Try not to get suckered into the gift shop.

Stopped here during 4^th of July. Privately owned center that offers views of the falls for ~$ 14/​pp.
For the price we paid, we thought we got our money’s worth. The trail (turn right after you cross the first bridge) leading to the fall was well maintained and the walkways in the gorge were well maintained. There are amazing views of the falls so bring your cameras. We spent maybe an hour there snapping photos and taking in the view.
The other side (turn left after you cross the first bridge) has a nature trail and an area where you can pan for gems/fossils.The nature trail was slightly disappointing. There aren’t many views but the trail is well maintained. I suppose this would be fun in the winter when you have snowshoes on.
Overall, not a bad place to stop. Facilities were very clean and there is a very large gift shops to get all your souvenirs. There is also a small café but it was closed when we arrived.

The walkways are well placed and have many different «did you know» signs to inform of the local flora and fauna and how the falls were born. Great way to experience the falls without breaking your neck.

We stopped here on a snowy February day on the way to board at Whiteface Mountain. It was BEAUTIFUL in winter, not a long hike which was perfect for a cold snowy day. Trails and outlooks were very safe and they provided over the shoe cleats to prevent slipping. We set off alone on well documented paths. Coffee/​cocoa/​tea and unlimited s’mores pkgs were also included in the $ 13.50 fee. The provided roasting sticks and had an enormous fire going not to far from the main building with seating. For $ 3 more you can purchase a hot dog (that you roast yourself over the fire) lunch that was delicious. Can’t lie– best s’mores ever. This is the perfect mini adventure for families with kids, older folks or just people (like us) who enjoy beautiful waterfalls and winter landscapes without the hassle of a day long trek.
