I really like this place but wouldn’t choose over border café any day of the week. The food is okay, the salsa is great, and the service staff is hit or miss.

Automatic star deductions for the following: 1. Their website and menu claims to have a New_Ark location when there isn’t one anymore. Very frustrating. 2. Speedy gonzales is $ 5.99 which is a little steep. I suppose north of the Mason-Dixon line, this is still pretty cheap I guess. 3. Very slow, inattentive service. They are friendly, yes but that does not cut it. Chips and salsa is suppose to be refilled. It must be a Delaware thing at the La Tolteca/La Tonolteca locations. 4. Portion sizes are much smaller than what you pay for. Decorative plates is just a way to fool people into thinking you get a lot of food. 5. Although the Chicken Quesadilla was very good, it was cut up like it was an appetizer(I am not at On The Border). Plus, the add-ons of lettuce, sour cream and guacamole made the dish much more expensive than it was suppose to be. I asked for a Ala carte item and instead, I got robbed. 6. Do not advertise SWEETTEA when it’s ICEDTEA. The star rating didn’t get to 1 stars because: The food overall was very good. Infact, the salsa was some of the best i have ever had. Everyone at my table(party of 3) enjoyed the meal a lot. It was something they all agreed that you couldn’t find this in New Jersey. Verdict? I would go there and spend the least amount as possible. Then again, when you come from NJ, you want to make the most out of the meal. I won’t be going there too often except when i really want Mexican food badly! Quite possibly the best 2 star rating I have ever given to a restaurant.

This place used to be so good. The service was good and the chips were good but everything else was cold, bland, and undesirable. The white cheese dip looked orange and tasted weird. I’m so sad that I lost my favorite place for Mexican food.

Eh, I kind of knew what to expect coming into this place. We were waiting to catch a movie next door so we came here. It’s cheap and fast. Nothing fancy. Got a luch special with some chicken enchilada. The gf got a cheese quesidilla and it wasn’t bad. Best part of the lunch was the mango daiquiri, ha. The food was average but the prices were cheap so I expected that. It’s 2* for what you expect it to be. Nothing great, but nothing you shouldn’t avoid either.

I love this place. Even when the name changed to La Tonalteca. I have never had a disappointing dish here and I think the Tacos are the best I’ve ever had. The cheese they put on them is amazing. It’s never crowded and the service is always quick. The food comes out to you sizzling hot and fresh. There is a great selection of items on the menu. I’ve really never had a bad experience here. I will definitely keep coming back!

I keep going back to this place. The people are friendly and the food is rich and tasty. I recommend the taco salad. The best part is the juices at the bottom with the re-fried beans and crunchy bowl. Somehow the food is better here than the one in Newark. I think the are both Tonaltecas despite the name on this post.

This place was terrible. I had come here based on the advice of a few coworkers. If you think Mexican food has five ingredients(crunchy shell of some sort, refried beans, shredded lettuce, jack cheese, and tomatoes) this place is for you. You’d be amazed at how many creations they will come up with those 5 ingredients. You will also be amazed at how bad the food is. When I ordered the fried ice cream i thought«oh well, how bad can ice cream be?» I hate asking questions like these because the universe will inevitably answer them. The fried ice cream was a let down of matrix 2 and 3 proportions. Do not waste your money at La Tolteca, even if it is only $ 10.
