I was at Fusion a number of years ago when they first opened but didn’t review it or follow up until the other day. Fusion is basically a men’s health and assistance organization supported by Broward County Health Department. Its emphasis is on HIV testing, HIV support, prevention and counseling along with programs involving drug and alcohol counseling and recovery. With Broward County Florida having over 18,000 known cases of HIV/AIDS, a large but somewhat undetermined number of unknown cases, one of the most rapidly growing percentages of new infections in the nation with an statistical ethic breakdown of 29% White, 48% Black, 21% Hispanic and 1% Multiracial, Fusion plays a very essential health role and diverse outlet in prevention and treatment of what is still a serious and ever growing local as well as national problem. Fusion also plays a very significant role in preventing drug addiction and in helping those who are in recovery from drug addiction. Along with various volunteer groups such as NoMoreMeth they form an outreach of services offering assistance. Fortunately, during my visit I had the opportunity to speak with some of those involved who were kind enough to explain to me how the drug addiction scene has changed from the reigning days of the Cocaine Cowboys of Miami to what they have become today. Quite frankly I had sort of thought those days were long over but apparently they have actually only changed in form, from one drug to another, along with differing associated problems including alarming increases of Hepatitis C infection rates which, back in the early days of the 70’s, was seemingly unknown. They do a lot of good and fulfill a community need.
