Almost hate to tell you about my hidden spot but the La Cocina at Castanenda’s marketplace is off the hook! Everything I’ve tried here has been so tasty, delicious and Fresh! From the Chiladillas to the Zopilote. I am NOT going to tell you what those dishes are you just going to have to come here and find out for yourself! Fyi, you’re going to pass at least three or four other Mexican restaurants before you get to the market just keep on walking! They aren’t as good as Castanenda’s!

Went in to their advertisement and got told they don’t have it. Showed them the picture and they still told me no. So we showed the cashier whom called the boss and than went to tell the cooks they do offer that. We got our tacos BUT it looked nothing like the advertisement :/sad embarrassing experience… now I know not to go there again for the kitchen. Just grocery shopping.

I was so disappointed to return to Castanedas market after 1 year! I used to be a regular there since I worked across the street and had been ranting and raving to everyone about how great the Torta Cubana was and how this is the only place in Sonoma county I would ever order from, however this is no longer the case. I was surprised to see the price had increased to $ 10 but was willing to pay it because I thought it would be worth it. Once I got home and unwrapped the torta I noticed it was all bread and no meat! Not how I remember it! It was filled with lettuce and tomato to make up for the size and had a spoonful of meat! I called Castanedas that night to express my disappointment, the clerk was extremely apologetic and told me the owner would contact me the next day. It has been over a week and I have not heard back. Not going back and I won’t be recommending this place to anyone!

Nice clean market located in windsor. Inside the market there is a counter where you can order a variety of mexican food and they cook to order. You can eat there(a couple of picnic type tables) or take it to go, which I usually do. I’ve come a couple times for the breakfast burritos, which are huge. The burritos are packed with egg, meat, and potatoes and I added some of their homemade salsa. Delish! The burritos are about $ 6.99 but they’re so large, I could only eat half. But it was a great way to start off the day. They also have an early bird special M-F before 9:00 for the same burrito for $ 4.99. That’s a really good deal for all the locals!

I am a Mexican food fan. Especially a great Taqueria which we have many great ones in Sonoma County. Here is another for you«mexican foodies» need to try. Castaneda s market and taqueria in Windsor. Great, clean market with killer hot food, salsas and the fixings. I drive from Santa Rosa for a plate they make up for me. Rotisserie style chicken, a thick freshly made chicharones, lean shredded carnitas, freshly made guacamole and pico de gallo. Wow Great hot food choices. Do yourself a favor and make the trip.

My wife & I enjoyed a taste of Valencia Spain(paella feast) on Saturday night 24 May at Jose’s Windsor Marketplace . This is a one of a kind Wine Country treat not to be missed. Reservations required at While you are at the market take advantage of some of his excellent produce and meats — all most reasonably priced.

The seafood paella was great! Jose is an excellent chef and gracious host. Loved the food so much, I went back the next day for a super burrito and bought a couple of thick New York steaks. Delicioso!

If you are in Windsor on Saturday night, and you love paella, then you should book for a paella dinner at Castenda’s. Jose’s paella is one of the best I have ever tasted, and included in the price are appetizers, salad, sangria and dessert. He will cook it behind the counter, and serve it to you at tables inside the market. If you are interested, you should sign up on so that Jose knows how much paella to prepare. We can’t wait to go back.

This place is a nice change of pace from your Safeways or Lola’s markets. I usually stop in during my lunch hour to pick up some fruits, veggies, other Latin food staples and lunch. The store is very clean and the products is fresh and the staff is friendly. The restaurant food is pretty darn good, and the rice is almost as good as my moms. I usually get tacos, a Plate of carnitas or chile verde, or the taco special(with tamales). Their guacamole/pico de gallo is fresh n chunky with hints of lime(yum). It help that most of the food is pretty inexpensive :). It worth stopping into and getting a few things and a bite to eat.

We came in here based on Unilocal reviews. I read that you get a free breakfast burrito if you check in, but i did not realize that the offer had expired. When i requested the free burrito(unaware the promo had expired), this guy kindly explained that even though the offer was over a year ago, that he would give me the free burrito anyways. He was very nice, friendly and accommodating to our party. Then I found out later he was Jose the paella guy! We bought 10 burritos and they were all very good. My husband and daughters loved the shrimp and garlic one. We ended eating half for lunch and the other half for dinner because they are so big. I wish we could have tried their paella. He mentioned he will be adding that to the menu very soon.

I come here a few times a week for meat, but today I ate lunch here and it was very delicious. I had 2 chicken breast tacos and my coworker had chicherone. U get to pick whatever you want to put on them and the 3 salsas at the tables are pretty tasty!

I love going here for fresh produce. It is a lot smaller than most of the grocery stores but it is really a great place. The people that work here have the best customer service and you can ask them for anything and they won’t get annoyed or irritated at helping you find what you need. And the best part about shopping here is the prices are a lot more reasonable than the other stores around here. Also, they have the best cakes and desserts here. I love the freshness of everything and it’s also very clean here. You can tell that the employees take pride in keeping the place clean and making sure everything is fresh. Love it here!

A great place for fresh, affordable produce! This has quickly become the only place that I’ll buy my fruits and veggies! The store is always clean and they have an amazing selection of Mexican foods. Their bakery is also filled with tasty pastries! Don’t forget to get a breakfast burrito while you’re there… They’re the best in town!

I love breakfast burritos, and seek them out when I can. This market has one of the very best breakfast burritos I have ever had. I’m sure it depends upon who is cooking, but I will visit again every time I am in the area.

Great market with lots of produce and dried products. Bakery, meat counter and Mexican food to go or eat there. Their homemade salsas are really good and the burritos are excellent. Also, they have Chicaron.

I might be confusing their breakfast burritos with the market on the other side of town. My husband had Castaneda’s breakfast burrito and it didn’t knock his socks off.(I don’t yet have the heart to tell him I probably sent him to the wrong place!) Looks like they do a pretty sweet business in their dining area though. I’d like to step in during lunchtime on a weekday to see how busy they get. They offer specials like $ 1 taco & tecate tuesdays, and um… I don’t drink tecate, but if I did, I’d SO be there! I checked out the images from and am ASTOUNDED. I absolutely need to create an event just so I can have them cater me some of that INSANELY incredible looking paella!!!

Wanted to give some huge kudos to Jose Castaneda, owner of Castaneda’s Market on Old Redwood Highway in Windsor and he is also known as «The Paella Guy». Our son’s wedding took place over the Fathers Day weekend at The Anvil Ranch and Vineyard way out in Annapolis. There were 100 people attending, give or take a few and one of the featured dishes was the Paella from Jose. All I can say is that you need to sample some for yourself! Two huge Paella pans were filled with rice, peas, shrimp, clams, mussels, calamari, sausage, chicken, edible flowers and a HUGE salmon placed on top, simmering in the broth. That is what I could remember, I’m sure there was more. Served with bread and green salad. On Friday’s at his market the paella is served from 4:30 pm(I think) till its sold out. There was plenty for everyone with many having second and third helpings. Just delicious. In addition to the pans of paella, Jose also had some great tasting appetizers to start. House cured Serrano ham, Spanish cheeses, marinated peppers and very yummy tortillas Espanolas(omelet with potatoes and chorizo). His market on Old Redwood Highway in Windsor has a large assortment of fresh vegetables, fruits as well as prepared foods. There is a small dining area and yesterday we had a breakfast burrito which was packed with eggs, sausage, potatoes and green salsa. Before 9:00 am it is $ 1.99 which is like stealing. On Friday’s at his market that delicious paella is served from 4:30 pm(I think) till it is sold out. Jose is the consummate professional and a pleasure to deal with. If you are having an affair, wedding or outing, consider getting that wonderful paella. Or just visit his market and snatch up some goodies there!
