They had a fire and have not reopened yet. I revised their score so as to NOT negatively influence one’s decision to go there when they re-open. I called them and they are under construction. I plan a visit as soon at they are up and running. Stay tuned for a REAL review whn I can.

I love Wen Hwa. I was so sad to hear about their fire over the summer and I hope they get up and running again soon! I know that they’re inevitably going to re-open because they are too good not to — so a few suggestions of my favorites: 1. Dumplings — they make THEBEST steamed dumplings around. They are awesome. Do not forget to order these. Their pork is really well cooked, they aren’t dense, and they just have awesome floor 2. Lemongrass Chicken — this was my go to entrée 9 times out of 10. Their lemongrass was awesome, it was spicy but not too spicy, and had a good selection of cooked veggies that came along with it. Their portions are huge so the dumplings lemongrass chicken combo is absolutely big enough for two people to split. I miss you Wen Hwa! Come back soon!

This place is really great and the staff is really responsive and nice. The owner works here a lot and they take a lot of pride in this place. The food is really good, and they have some great beer available. Highly recommended.

FYI — We stopped by today for lunch and found the location closed down. It appeared to have been closed for some time.

Wen Hwa is a superstar restaurant in Winston-Salem. The food is always fresh and flavorful, and the service matches in quality. Their dumplings, lemongrass chicken, and Singapore noodles are all tip top. I just got back in town from a week working on the road, called to place a take out order, and my call couldn’t be completed on numerous attempts. I googled to see if something had happened, and Im sad to have read a kitchen fire caused massive damage to the facilities this weekend.
Hoping the best for the owners and everyone that gets their livelihood from such an amazing business.

Unilocal lead us here and did not disappoint. Our waiter, Daniel, was excellent and knew the menu inside and out. The food was wonderful, the steamed edamame was INSANELY good, as well as the mango sticky rice. All the meats can be substituted with tofu, veggies, vegan chicken, or vegan pork. The vegan chicken/pork is just sliced tofu with different sauces and spices. Being vegan, the vegan chicken was the some of the best vegan chicken I’ve ever had. The atmosphere is a cool casual. A must for Winston-Salem tourists and locals alike.

Excellent food and service. The place was packed so we got it to go, but the food was superb. Hot and sour soup, Crab Ragoons, Orange Chicken!

Nice family owned restaurant. Food was very good. Service very friendly and attentive. We will return, but probably won’t get the sticky rice with mango again. Not exactly what we were hoping for.

Wen Hwa is quite simply our go-to in Winston. While we love most of the independent restaurants in downtown, Wen Hwa’s excellent(and always piping hot) tradition Chinese and fusion specialties are consistently delicious. The fact is, whether it’s a business lunch or a family dinner, they are the best value in town which is why we eat here more frequently than at any other restaurant.

I was very impressed when I ate here with my mother and nieces ages 10 and 7. While they did not have a childrens menu they quickly offered suggestions. It was a hit. The menu is on what looks like a Chinese calendar. Very unique. The service was amazing! The owner made sure to come over to our table and engage in conversation with us. The waitress was very good and made sure we had everything we needed and more. She showed my nieces some tricks with the big fish they have. The pineapple chicken dish I had was beyond amazing. My taste buds were in heaven!

Outstanding service. Nice atmosphere. The best fried rice I’ve ever had. The spring rolls were good. Wife’s General’s chicken lacked in flavor, and the chicken was lightly breaded and thin sliced, and slightly dry. I had the sizzling Saigon chicken, and it was okay. A very healthy dish, but lacked in flavor.

I have been meaning to try Wen Hwa for a few years. I wish I had not waited so long. The food, service, and ambiance were fabulous plus the prices were reasonable. The server was nice and very polite. They have fabric menus which were cool but they had an odd smell to them. We ordered the egg drop soup, pork ribs, summer rolls, mango cheesecake, and Singapore noodles. The soup was good. The pork ribs were delicious. The sauce was well balanced and not too sweet. The ribs themselves were very tender and I would order them again. The summer rolls were fresh and the shrimp on the inside were cooked well. I liked the sauce it was served with. The noodles were delicious. The meats were cooked well and the noodles had a nice spice. They were not dry and I want to try other noodle dishes here. The summer roll was a nice cooling accompaniment for the spicy noodles. The dessert was tasty. It reminded me of a blintz. It was not too sweet and the ice cream was a good side since it added a little more sweet to the dessert. i can’t wait to come back here the next time I crave traditional chinese food.

General Tao chicken was fresh with big pieces lightly breaded with a delicious and delightful sauce. I had the mandarin orange shrimp. Crispy and orangy. Another delightful sauce. Owner John came to table and greeted us. We will see you again real soon and bring our friends.

We love this place! The food is always fresh, the servers are always friendly. They offer several vegan and vegetarian dishes that even a meat eater would enjoy. The ambiance is great inside and outside and the owner always stops by our table to make sure everything was ok. We Highly recommend trying this restaurant!

Not good. I was hesitant to try this place, and my instinct ended up being correct. came here tonight for dinner. I have to say, had it not been the ambiance, this place would have been a 1 star for me. why so harsh? well let’s just say this whole pan-asian theme is not working. i ordered the cantonese chow fun. there is NOTHING cantonese about that dish. my chow fun was drenched in soy sauce that had an excessive amount of msg in it, i already had a headache going in to dinner and it made it twice as bad. in fact, the msg is so strong i am still thirsty, 3 hours after my meal. The rice noodle is all hard, flaky and broken up. Cabbage in chow fun? The only plus, the fried tofu was pretty darn good. for a saturday night, this place is really quiet! the inside is really dark, so we decided to be seated outside, plus it’s a nice day out. the decorations is pretty cute, and i guess the waiter is ok, nothing special. but honestly, the food really needs help. i give up on good asian food in town, or ethnic food for that matter. i think i will stick to thai swatdee, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Their dessert sounded good, I was going to order the banana spring rolls to redeem my entrée experience, but then again, maybe not.

I have eaten at Wen Hwa probably a dozen times. Always when I am going to a show at the theater across the street. I have been going since before the chef’s special fried rice was on the menu. So, I feel a bit guilty for not reviewing it sooner. I also, for some reason, feel guilty for liking it so much. After all, what is not to like? The food is very good and reasonably priced, the owner is a pleasant presence in the dining room. I almost always start with the lettuce wraps, which are more than enough for two people. The chef’s special fried rice and Singapore street noodles are also favorites, the latter being a bit spicy for those who like that. In fact, I’ve not had anything here that I don’t like. I am always happy when I leave. I think I must have a subconscious preference for«authentic» cuisine, probably from watching too much No Reservations. This is an Asian FUSION restaurant. So, there are hints of Chinese and Thai and other Asian cuisines on the menu, and what’s so wrong with that? My only suggestion for improvement is with the menus. Although I liked the novelty of the cloth scroll menu when I first started going, now I feel like it is limiting. After all, if you invest in that menu, you’re not going to want to change it often — if at all. Which is too bad because I feel the chef is pretty creative.

Brought a group for my birthday. I was the only one that had eaten here before. It’s one of my favs for work lunches and a casual dinner. I wasn’t surprised all my picky eaters LOVED the dishes they got. I’ve never had anything less than excellent off this menu. Gina always takes care of me and didn’t disappoint when she remembered it was my birthday celebration :) I don’t care for fried desserts, but she brought out the fried mango cheesecake for my birthday and it was amazing. They make it in house and I had to share there was so much deliciousness. They have the best seaweed salad in town and I can’t seem to get away from the veggie lettuce wraps. The street noodles are the jam too. The ambience is in line with the cuisine and a great place for everyone. Families, parties, dates, working lunches and I even see parents with babies. We often come after the gym for a guaranteed healthy vegan bite. However, they do have meat choices and make everything as you order and are very accommodating to substitutions.

I can’t believe it took me so long to try this place out! This place has great food and amazing service. I was a bit shocked the service was so great because I feel like more and more I find service going downhill at places. I thought the cloth menu scrolls were a nice touch. The bf was confused at first and thought they just didn’t drop off a menu. I started off with the dumpling soup which was quite good. For the entrees we went with the honey sesame chicken. The sauce was good and I liked that they used large pieces of white meat chicken. Not that questionable small pieces of meat situation(I’m looking at you Mr Lu’s). We also got the pan fried noodles which resembled a dish the bf loves at a restaurant in his home town. It did not disappoint! Although the vegetables on it were carrots and broccoli(my least favorite of the category) the noodles were that perfect al dente texture you look for in this type of dish. The bf commented how the dish was even better as leftovers since the noodles had some time to soak up the sauce. Once I saw the dessert menu I knew I was getting something! I was torn between the fried mango cheesecake and the fried banana spring roll. I went with the cheesecake and it was delicious! Next time I will have to try the banana spring roll. Check-in on Unilocal and get 10% off of your entire bill! I also saw a sign outside that said on Tuesdays you can get one entrée 50% off.

I’m beginning to sound like a broken record, but this is yet another fine restaurant I wish was in Greensboro. We have nothing here that approaches the quality of food, service, and ambiance that this little hidden gem offers. This is a small place, with some limits on the parking — the lot is small, and a little awkward and tight, and there is a little parking on the street. The interior is nicely done, the lighting is soft — dark ceciling with some lanterns hanging; the walls are red; there are table cloths and water glasses with red napkins, & small plates with really nice chop sticks, on all the tables, along with a decorative bamboo plant — and the music is soft and soothing. We started with a couple of Spring Rolls(crispy & delicious), and Cantonese Pot Stickers that were fried as crispy as I’ve seen, and loaded with well seasoned pork — I would, without reservation, order both again. The dipping sauce for the Spring Rolls was exceptional, tangy without being overly sweet. We followed that with Vietnamese Black Pepper Chicken & Shrimp, and Hunan Style Beef — two of my favorites Chinese dishes, when they are done right, and these were done right! The Black Pepper dish was loaded with thinly sliced, tender chicken and fresh tasting shrimp. The dish included sliced onion, green onions, and shredded carrot in a spicy black pepper sauce that was super — the amount of spice was just right as the heat steadily built as you ate the dish — outstanding! The Hunan Beef was its equal in every way — loaded with thin slices of tender, flavorful beef in combination with sliced onions, green onions, and a super Hunan sauce on crispy noodles — and in this dish as well, the heat level built as you went along. This dish had none of the superfluous vegetables you typically find in this dish, and its cousins — Mongolian Beef & Szechuan Beef. Both dishes came with rice & spring rolls. The service was extremely friendly and attentive — we were checked on frequently, our water glasses never were empty, and we simply felt well taken care of in a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. Our 2 apps, 2 entress, and hot tea came to a touch over $ 31 — real value for the quality of the food, service, and the overall dining experience. As you might guess, we’ll be back — there are a number of items we want to try. This is a statement on their website, and it is so true: «Our quiet and soothing atmosphere is perfect for couples and groups looking for a romantic setting.»

Continuing on my quest for the best Chinese food in town, Wen Hwa fits the bill. There is a long, drawn out story that involves a lovely couple, their restaurant mixed with Asian authenticity in Downtown Winston-Salem that turns nasty, ugly and acrimonious complete with a décor change, management change and restaurant name change. I won’t tell you that story because I don’t believe in spreading gossip. But I will tell you this: It’s not gossip if it’s true. What I do know to be true is: This restaurant has never failed me. Every single time I eat here, the service is great, the food is great and the décor is even better. A trip to the restroom may reveal that the kitchen staff prefers to listen to rap music while churning out your meal, but this should not deter you from digging into saucy, crispy, General Tao’s chicken, steaming hot Singapore Street Noodles or the crisp lettuce leaves of the chicken wraps. Not to leave vegetarians or vegans out in the street, Wen Hwa offers faux chicken and pork as additional protein options. Classic tofu is always available, but it’s nice to know you have choices. The sake, beer and wine lists cover the gamut and there is something for everyone on the drink menu. The only cautionary item: the calamari. Not only does it look like pieces of styrofoam, it is garnished with styrofoam noodles and tastes like rocks. Flash-fried pieces of granite. :-/ Complementary at the end of your meal, you will get a fortune cookie and a coupon for 10% off your next visit. If you’re anything like me, you’ll have 5 of them in your purse and forget to use it each time you visit.
