I thought this place was really different and unique. It was cool that it had such a history and interesting past. Our server was fantastic and has worked at the restaurant for 40 years. She really made this an even better dining experience. The food was fantastic. I had the pot roast(which I definitely recommend) and my boyfriend had the fish and chips. Even the bread was great! I loved the little relish tray that also came with the meal. The dill dressing(which they make in house) was something I’ve never tasted and was quite delicious. The white table clothes and three course meal menu were the icing on the cake. The only tiny complaint I had was the funny smell of the place, but apparently it was the smell of old, dried out wood(kinda antiquey and mildewy). I would recommend this restaurant especially if you love history and are a history buff. It’s Connecticut’s oldest inn!

The wait staff have huge breasts. It’s like a Hooters or Tilted Kilt in the middle of Catholic land. The food and the wait staff are exceptional. This is a jewel in a tight ass state, Awesome place to stay! It’s a warm and welcome place to stay.

I thought it was good food at the pub in the lower level. Went there on a cold afternoon in March was very cozy staff was very nice warm and friendly. Has stuffed shrimp very good and onion soup, Iwant to try and go back for their Sunday Brunch. My mom use to eat there with her friends many years ago and it was very good as well. Could be a little cleaner looking but it is a old place, cozy.

Yikes! My wife and I ate here about a week ago. The average age of the clientele was about 106(we’re in our 40s). We knew something was wrong when the waiter(a polite kid) put one of those condiment holders on the table. In it were sweet pickles, pulverized beets, and this cottage cheese concoction. Heinous. Food was acceptable but not good enough to bring us back. Should’ve just gone to Chips.

I have seen such an improvement in the Curtis House Inn in the past few months. It’s been a lot of hard work on the parts of Chris and Dorrie, and it’s quite apparent that they’ve been striving to make this the best restaurant in town. It’s the little things that count. The entire property seems a bit cleaner and brighter. There are more smiles on staff than before. The quality of the food, which I always thought was good, has gotten even better. Since I eat here at least once a week, it’s easy to track changes. They’re attentive to reviews on Unilocal and other sites, and work to fix the problems people identify. There have been staff changes, and menu changes. Picayune complaints from too-fussy guests are [rightfully] ignored. Serious problems are fixed before the guest sees them. Here’s a good example: A new server, who didn’t know me, took my order(Pan-seared Turbot). She returned when I expected it to be served and told me that the chef was not happy with the quality of the fish and asked if it was okay if the chef substituted sole. I was pleased that the chef refused to serve something that wasn’t up to his standard. I’ve been in too many places that just sent the food out and let the server deal with complaints. A tip of my toque to the chef! My replacement meal was out in no time, and was more than great. Yes, there will be off nights — an unexpected rush that spreads staff thin and may cause something on the menu to be 86’ed. A server who was less than cheerful. In my recent experience, these are aberrations, and not the standard. There are very few restaurants in town that I recommend to others. Curtis House is back on the list.

I really like this kind of an old fashioned inn. But this includes exspectations. Interieur Is authentic, service is good. I was wondering about burgers and pizza on the menu but they prob want to widen their target group. Unfortunately I think they loose focus. I had a creamy carrot soup which was great and meatloaf with veggie and mashed potatos. Meatloaf… what can you do wrong? It was ok as well as the veggies. The mashed potatos from my point of view the weakest part of the meal. Not fresh made but made from powder, had a bit of a skin on it as it was sitting for a while in the hot plate. Apple crumble was good and the choice of wine and tap beer is good. The restaurant was full and people seemed to enjoy their food.

I like old style New England ambiance and food, this place has both. They emphasis the 3 course meal and it’s reasonably priced. I had short rib pot roast, it was great. My wife had a salmon special and loved it. Coffee and apple crisp for dessert can’t be beat. The service was good and the staff just attentive enough.

Went with the family for thanksgiving. First of all… they dont have home made bread. it was a bread from stop and shop. Secondly HORRIBLE service — the waitress would reply to me if i ordered something saying«i guess» with a nasty voice. In addition, OMG i must say… the only good thing they had in there was good — calamari. that you cant go wrong! but the food didnt look good at all, the soup was in a small cup — so cheap no pieces of lobster(lobster bisque). i didnt order the regular meal because the thanksgiving menu was very limited. i asked for a kids pasta with mariana instead and the waitress says to me «i guess». The pasta came with butter — i asked for sauce the sauce and it was ok but i had to pay 16 $ for a kids pasta. NEVERSEENANYTHINGLIKETHIS. we had an apple pie for dessert and OMG — please… dont order… its frozen, it doesnt taste well(actually it has no taste) and it does not have any juice from the pie. ITSLIKE A ROCK! I honestly don’t know how this restaurant still in business… You dont see any young people. Only older crowed like 60 – 70 and above. If you are looking for a restaurant to have a nice meal — plan ahead and go somewhere… Their food is tasteless… My husband requested crab cakes with mashed potatoes. The plate came with sweet potatoes too and ok no biggie but the taste for crab cakes… Was canned chicken! My husband didn’t eat the meal at all. It was so bad that he only had one bite, he didn’t eat the desert because the pie was dry and no taste, and they still wanted to charge him 28 $ for the meal. Please! I talked to a woman about charging full price… Her response was… Did he say he didn’t like? I said does it need to say when the food is on the side of the table? I had to argue with her because they would no give any discount eventhough he didn’t eat the meal. I told her he barely touched the crab cakes and she said ok i will take 14 $ off — whatever. Never again!!! ps: all this was in caps… but too bad that i cant leave a review in caps.

I’ve been eating here since I was a baby in the 1950s. I love the place and I don’t want to give it a low review… but…the food is just not good. Most of what we were served was dry and reheated and we could not find a healthy meal or item on the menu. The Inn was almost empty when we were there and the service was slow. The worst part about all this is that they’ve cut back, way back, on their famous relish plate that was served before all meals.

The food was good but the service was awful. Went for lunch on 9−26−15. An older woman with a deep voice was the waitress. What an attitude. Not friendly at all. If she does not want to work there; quit. Don’t spread your negative attitude with paying customers.

One star is way to much. Unless you completely lost all sense of taste(food, décor & service) turn around and run, but not far… so many superior places close by. Sorry but just don’t know where to start with this«below diner quality» dishes. Oh well I’ll stop so I actually don’t have to insult individuals.

Went here for me and my fiancé’s rehearsal dinner. The food was served buffet style. The waitress was very good, attentive, and nice. The food itself, especially for a buffet, was unbelievably delicious. The most most tender and buttery steak I’ve ever eaten. Delicious seasonal vegetables, roasted potatoes well seasoned, their homemade dill and balsamic vinaigrette was to die for, chicken and ravioli also well done, the whole meal was spot on. Would recommend to anyone hosting a get together or an event.

Went hear for Mother’s Day brunch. It was eh. I was hoping for some old school classics . But it was just poorly prepared banquet food. Ok. Brunch buffet should have eggs on it. This had other breakfast foods but no eggs. The carving station consisted of one meat. Turkey and it was s boiled breast. The stuffing was made in a bread loaf and sliced like bread. The shrimp cocktail was floating in a bowl of water. Im sure it used to b Ice, but way before I got there. Not one server thought it would b a good idea to drain off the water and add Ice? The bar was10’ away and has tons of ice! The mimosas and belinis were flat as if no champagne or they were pre-made and all fizzled out. Last but not least, chicken pot pie should always b a pie !! Not some cream sauce w chix and some frozen peas and carrots thrown in w a biscuit on top… Very dissapointed. So wanted this to b a classic. New England experience.

Bottom line: Excellent meal!!! Went there for Mothers Day dinner. It was crowded, as expected. What was unexpected was how delicious the meal was, especially considering how busy they were. We ordered Filet Mignon & Scallop Salad… Both came with sides, dessert & coffee. The steak was the best I’ve had in CT — red wine sauce, carmelized onions & mushrooms. My husband loved the flavors in the salad. The sides were delicious & even the dessert was great — not overly sweet, with great flavors. For CT, the prices were reasonable, considering the quality & amount of food. The atmosphere was warm and comforting. We will definitely be back & I can’t believe it took so long for us to get there. All in all, a GREAT dining experience & I would highly recommend!!!

My husband and I and stepdaughter went there last night for dinner. Everything was excellent!!! My husband had the filet mignon, he said it was the best he had ever had, my stepdaughter had the meatloaf wrapped in bacon… out of this world, possibly better than the filet… I had had the turkey dinner.delicious. if you get an app, I highly recommend the nacho dip. Our server was Trevor, he was incredible, polite, attentive and a sincere pleasure. We will definitely be going back there

I am a film producer and just finished shooting a movie in Woodbury, Ct. I have to say that we couldn’t have done it without the help of the Curtis House. We housed our entire crew here, they served us meals at night, stayed open late for us(crew hours run late), covered us when we needed last minute catering. Both Chris and Dorie let me talk their ears off when I was frustrated. Specifics: Their homemade Fried Chicken might be the best I’ve ever had. No exaggeration. Pot Roast– Perfect Drinks(Important for a film crew) — Great pours for low prices. City Hall(Basement bar) has such a great club house feel to it. Exactly what we needed. Thanks guys, I really look forward to visiting again if I’m back that way!

I first stayed at the Curtis House upon discovering it in 1993. I drove from Boston for what I thought would be a day trip to research some ancestral roots. According to my family tree 5 generations of my paternal kin lived in Woodbury from approx 1700 to 1795, and at most I hoped to find some property records at the town hall. I arrived before the town hall opened, so I decided to turn back and have a look at the inn I passed on the way in. As I approached I was shocked to find a sign above the front door: «Built by Anthony Stoddard Before 1736» Rev Anthony Stoddard is my 6th great-grandfather, and he served as Woodbury’s pastor for 60 years. It took me a while to regain my composure while I stared at that sign. As I entered I was greeted by owner Chet Hardisty and his daughter TJ. Long story short, we talked for hours, and they educated me on the inn’s history. The Hardisty family has owned the place since 1954, so they are fairly well informed. Needless to say I decided to stay for a couple of nights, and I pretty much levitated for the entire duration. I visited again twice in the late ’90’s and most recently in 2012. On the last trip I brought my 11 year old son, and we were assigned to Room 1. TJ informed us that Marilyn Monroe was a guest in Room 1 in the 1950’s while visiting future husband, playwright Arthur Miller.(I knew nothing about hauntings until just prior to this visit.) We experienced no paranormal activity during our stay, with one minor exception: Kevin claimed he got a nice foot rub in the middle of the night. I didn’t give it to him, so it must have been Marilyn. I can only say that every stay at this place has been a most pleasant experience, and, to put it mildly, a thrill. I echo what others write about the quality and value of both lodging and dining. The lobster bisque is indeed outstanding, as is the pot roast and other entrees mentioned. I’ll add that I have never had a larger portion of escargot in my life — they usually run $ 12+ for a meager 6 snails — at the Curtis House $ 8 for 10 or more, and delicious. Most important of all is a characteristic also mentioned by other reviewers, the staff’s warmth and hospitality. They genuinely welcome you like you’re family — and I must point out that most staff had no knowledge that I indeed AM family. Simply a fabulous place, but then again I’m kinda biased.
