This place has a fun selection of Nepali goods as well as Indian and East Asian. I put up a picture of something I always had a hard time finding. Well, Po Wing Hong in Chinatown has almost everything but there are a few things that are here and not there.

Himalayan Mini Mart is a corner store geared towards the sizable population of Nepalis in the area. As far as I know, this is the only place around(perhaps in all of NYC or even the North East) where one can buy ingredients that are unique to Nepali cooking. I’m talking about things like gundruk(dried fermented mustard greens), jimbu(a Himalayan dried herb that’s in the onion family) and timmur(Nepal’s own relative of the Sichuan pepper). These ingredients are staples of Nepali cooking but are never ever found in the Indian grocers. I used to bring back suitcases of the stuff from Nepal(always worried they’d be mistaken for another aromatic contraband), but I no longer need to. They don’t gouge you on the prices either. I also come here for goat leg, already cut up for a curry and reasonably priced at $ 3.49/lb in 2lb packages. They even carry goat meat with the skin attached, which can be difficult to find. An adjacent freezer is stocked with momos(Nepali dumplings with chicken, pork or beef) at 17 for about $ 6. They’re decent, but I prefer to get mine from Chinese dumpling houses at $ 10 for 50 — or better yet, make it at home for a minuscule sum.

«Himalayan» is a bit ambitious, as this is almost your normal corner convenience store. There is a small row of Indian snacks that attracted a couple purchases, and the owner will try to sell his«handmade» paper notebooks imported from Nepal. I think I saw those at Barnes and Noble…
