Why I picked Dr. DiStefano over Dr. Leonard. I met with both doctors and here’s why it was easy to pick Dr. DiStefano over Dr. Leonard. DiStefano: I met with the doctor himself in a conference room and he took as much time with me as I wanted. He measured my balding spot and used pictures, diagrams, and a computer to educate me on the two techniques, Follicular Unit Transplant(FUT) and Individual Graft Technique(IGT)(Basically FUT takes less time on the day and is therefore cheaper, but the recovery is one day longer.) He explained the math to determine how many follicles I would need transplanted, and quoted a price per follicle. I went with the more expensive IGT as I wanted less time out of work. The doctor explained the drug Propecia which many people take — in addition to having a transplant — for baldness, quoting specific percentages of effectiveness. He also detailed the negative side effects and he suggested strongly that I should carefully read about the side effects before taking the drug. When I finished with the doctor, the quote was put in writing. They did not ask me for money and there was no attempt to get me to sign up that day. Leonard: Though I had asked for a meeting with the doctor, I was first made to meet with someone else. When I asked his credentials he said, «I had a hair transplant myself once.» He took no measurements and he discussed(without the aid of pictures, diagrams, or a computer) the FUT technique. I asked twice about the IGT technique and he dismissed it out of hand saying, «It’s too expensive.» After awhile, Dr. Leonard came in and took me to his very large office where he sat at his desk. He looked me over and then wrote a number on my file and covered it with his hand. He told me that, in addition to a transplant, I should take the drug Propecia. He never mentioned any negative side effects. When I asked about price, there was no talk about the number of follicles to be transplanted. Instead, he looked under his hand and said, «It’ll cost you $,» a figure multiple thousands of dollars more than what Dr. DiStefano quoted. After less than three minutes, he whisked me out of his office and gave me to someone who asked for my credit card. What I did not grasp was that they were going charge me for a three-month supply of Propecia.(Subsequently, they sent me another three-month supply, but they have agreed to refund me the money for that one.) The entire experience at Dr. Leonard’s office felt very sleazy. Given this sleaziness feeling, given they insisted on the FUT technique, and given the significantly higher price, it was easy to decide that Dr. Leonard was not for me. I had the procedure done at Dr. DiStefano’s and I am very happy with this decision.
