This is a new ‘Latin American’ restaurant replacing a long established Mexican restaurant. We were wary upon entering as there were no guests at 12:30. The waiter explained they had been open only a short time and had just gotten their liquor license. He brought the menus. We asked a couple basic questions, he stated the menus were new and scurried to the back to ask the cook or owner. We could overhear the loud conversations. He returned to explain burrito Verde is pork and Colorado is beef. We asked for water — he hurried away after explaining they were newly arrived from Illinois. The menu mentioned that meals came with two hot sauces, extra 50 cents each and an extra plate to share a dish is $ 1.00. We asked if chips and salsa were served. He said yes and about 10 minutes after arriving he brought one bowl with maybe 20 chips and a Chinese soup spoon with a scoop of salsa! We asked for additional chips and a bowl of salsa and to speak with owner. The owner arrived, we explained we were long time customers and that Yakima had some pretty high expectations for Mexican restaurants; have the most per capita and best in the state. We mentioned the spoon of salsa, chips and stated they were both very good. I ordered the burrito verde, partner asked for half order of nachos grande and asked if it came with beans and rice. Waiter said yes, so partner asked if they could sprinkle the beans and rice over the top. We could overhear the waiter explaining the order. Food arrived, burrito was beautiful, looked like the burritos we used to get from our favorite restaurant in Houston years ago. The nachos were huge! We knew this was not the half order we ordered. The burrito and sauce was wonderful, pork cubes as tasty as my homemade. However, a few bites in to it and the over saltiness was overwhelming. Flavor great — too much salt. The nachos were disappointing and also too salty. Knowing we could not eat the leftovers, left on table and asked for check. Nachos were $ 14.95. Not only charged for full order but added a side of rice and beans. What happened was the frenetic waiter mistook the order then gave the wrong instructions to the cook, as we over heard. Issue of not listening, clarifying due to haste and inexperience and then miss communicating to cook. Owner credited the nachos after arguing with us that we asked for a side order of rice and beans and talking down to us explaining several times that ‘all restaurants’ do this or that and this is industry standard. Good luck with that. This could be a good place again with attention to décor(looks like a tired highway diner inside — no décor — but this must be what they want); better service, reduction in salt and paying more attention to the community expectations.
