This was a nice little stop to take a break and enjoy some locally home made Schnaps and rum. Staff is very friendly and you can tell they truly like what they are doing. The inside is not very large so it can get packed fast. Tasters are a good deal and you can try one or divide them up to try several.

This is a definite place to be visited if you find yourself in the cute town of Yellow Springs. It is located next door to Yellow Springs Brewery and there is often a food truck outside. We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and one of the owners served us. She was extremely friendly and you could tell she was passionate about their products. They have clearly marked their location with yellow signs directing you there, which was much appreciated. We sampled most of their products for $ 2 each(they let you split them up into smaller servings if you are trying multiple types). They specialize in German schnaps and rum. I admittedly do not often drink either but these were exceptional! I learned a lot about the process of distilling these spirits, as well as what sets German schnaps apart from their American counterparts(spoiler alert: German schnaps is a million times better and less sweet). There was a wide variety of products to choose from and they were all delicious. My favorite was the Apple Pie Moonshine which is made from rum for a nice twist. We vowed right then and there to stop by on our way out of town to buy some bottles(our car was far away and we didn’t want to be THOSE people walking around with bottles in brown bags). We returned later that day and the owner warmly welcomed us back, even giving us great suggestions for other things to do in the area. We ended up buying a bottle of the Apple Pie Moonshine and Golden Moon Rum, both priced very reasonably. The owner thanked us for coming in and supporting their local business. It felt great that they were so appreciative of their customers and it was an overall fantastic experience.

What can a small, intimate, bright yellow tasting room next door to a sleepy-town distillery have to offer? An opportunity to relax and sample ambitious small batches of locally made, European-inspired Schnaps and varieties of rum so sweet and pure you’ll second guess your senses. Then of course want more! It’s not hard to find-signs everywhere. Inside, outside, follow the yellow wood signs. Like I said, once in you’ll notice the intimacy of the room. We walked in to encounter a rather boisterous(yet nice) group finishing their tastings. It’s hard to hide from conversation in such a setting. I can only imagine what the owners end up with after tastings since these creations of theirs mean business. These aren’t Pucker, liquid-sugar, line-‘em-up-schnapps. No. These are high alcohol formulations that are in constant development and rotation, many times using local, seasonal ingredients. What you see one week might be replaced with something else the next. Pretty cool. Each 1 ounce(roughly) sample is $ 2. If you sample many, or all, you can do ½ samples-not an issue. Kerry, the gracious co-owner we met, suggested this to us when she learned we were definitely curious about trying everything. Must tries-the Sneaky Monk and their best-selling Apple Pie Moonshine. The former is a complex concoction of herbs, spices and wines that takes over a year to create. The latter, put simply, is liquid apple pie in a cup. Utterly delicious; definitely addictive. Soooo, perhaps I lied a little when I said they’re not liquid sugar. Liquid sugar with no impurities-that’s better. If they have it, the Honey Do is another to experience. It’s made from fresh, local honey and that taste is amazing. Not everything is bottled for sale. Like I said, they’re constantly trying new recipes and ingredients and you’re sometimes the guinea pig. Evil geniuses, they are. A 750 ml bottle of that naturally-flavored Apple Pie Moonshine rum for $ 20 is definitely something to leave with. After you’re done you can head directly over to the seconds-away Yellow Springs Brewery and try their own locally made brews. If you need a little sustenance there’s usually always a local food truck outside. Overall, it’s a great pocket of local businesses who pride in their community and the quality of their craft. Nothing better.

I stopped at this distillery a few weeks ago. I have looked high and low for a place that sells traditional German style Schnapps. Not the sweet stuff we get here in the US but the somewhat flavorful, generally clear, not sweet drink. It is almost like a flavored vodka(but no vodka taste). There is definitely a wonderful fruit flavor but still dry and smooth(if good quality). S & G has a wonderful himbeer(raspberry). Their Sneaky Monk is really nice. Great after dinner drink to help the digestion. I can’t wait for them to release their Pear schnapps.
