Catania’s Pizza

Always judge a pizza place by the slice and this is one of the best around. Right amount of cheese and sauce and perfect size to fold. Split a chicken Marsala roll and cheese calzone with slice with my date and both were cheesy hot and delicious. Nothing fancy, just a good old school pizzeria.

The last few times I was here the food has really changed.
It looks like some of the same people are working there but the quality and flavor of the pizza, rolls, and calzones have really changed.
Haven’t seen the owner in a long time, maybe he has moved on.

I learned about this place a few years back when I moved to Westchester. The first time I had the veal & pepper calzone I was hooked. Because it is in the other direction from my commute, I don’t often go until I get that «woolie» for the v&p. I will usually get a box of 6 to take home for the family.
Did this place change hands recently? I mean what a disappointment. While the crust was still good (light and airy but not crumbly or doughy), the filling has been radically changed. And it wasn’t just me, the family also was like WTF???
Oh, and I took a slice home as well. Puddle of grease on top (I am not exaggerating — a puddle about 2″ in diameter). Doughy crust, totally lacked flavor after wiping off the grease with Bounty Towels. I am thinking the box might have been tastier.
I will not be driving by 50+ better pizza joints any longer to come here. Too bad because I really thought this was a gem of a place.

I’ve been getting Pizza for years from them. Always the best quality in foods. I don’t know if they are under new management their pizza is better than ever.

People here is nice. Always with a good face for the customer. Prices are reasonable to stop and have lunch is one of the best places in the area.

So many great memories here with my grandfather growing up. Doesn’t get more NY than this.

It seems like nowadays it’s too much to ask for someone to wash their hands after they’ve been sweeping but in this place it is. And top it off with 2 rude workers who act like they are doing you a favor. Plenty of other places to go to that will appreciate customers and are not disgusting. Go across the street! Do not go here! No stars.

Just went there with four friends (Sunday night), because of the good reviews on Unilocal.
so we punch it into the gps and try to find the little pizza place. we find it with little effort, park, and go in, and it’s tiny. there is not a table big enough for five people to sit at, so we split into two awkward groups. I go up to order a small pie, because we all just wanted a quick snack while waiting for our movie at the Alamo drafthouse (which is somewhere to totally go). I wait, wait, wait in line behind two older guys who are ordering together. When I finally get to order by the one guy helping people in front, I order the small pie to stay blah blah blah. I ask how long it’ll be– fifteen minutes. They also have a tiny fridge up front if you want to purchase a gatoraid or water… :/​
I go sit down and we wait, wait, wait. People come and go. It’s been like thirty minutes, we are wondering where our food is. We don’t want to be rude and ask so we just assume it’s taking a little long and wait. Then these two black kids come in, eat, and as they leave say to us, «are you guys going to have a fivesome or something?» Then laugh about it and walk away. We are not from the area so idfk if this is a normal thing here? Kind of ghetto. But anyways! We finally ask where our food was like forty minutes in, and then they tell us it’s almost done and they ‘messed up’? The first pie they cooked us? And that they were going to give us a large pie for the trouble. Would have been nice to be informed, though…
So finally we get our effin pizza! And just saying, it’s not that great. It’s bland. Infact, probably the least spectacular pizza I’ve ever had in New York. And no, I’m not just saying this because our hour wait in there was terrible as well. I am something of a regular pizza eater. Definately not worth the wait or all the awesome Unilocal reviews.

Probably the best calzones I’ve ever had. They are different than most places, as they are small and square. They only make three varieties, meatball, cheese, and veal and peppers. The cheese is easily my favorite and I remember bringing home sheets of them to heat up during the week for lunch and dinner.
Catania’s also has really good Sicilian slices and serves up some great Italian ices during the Summer.

I grew up in Yonkers and went to this place a few times a week. Every Friday was pizza night in my house. Having moved to CA 7 years ago, I make it a point to come here every trip I make back to NY. The plain slice is delicious, as well as their calzones. It’s always a toss up between the meat calzone or the veal & peppers. I usually opt for both. When it is available, make sure you get the eggplant rollatini. It is to die for and you will need a cigarette when you are done. The Italian Ices are also great in the summer months.
The quality of the food is consistently good. The pizzeria isnt fancy, but serves its purpose and the atmosphere is relaxed. The lines at lunch time look long, but these guys move quick and you wont wait long at all.

I have been going to Catanias my whole life. They are the neighborhood pizza joint you go to for a slice.
The slice I go to Catanias for is the Sicilian marinara slice.
Now typically, I judge a pizza place by their plain slice. I don’t think Catanias has the best plain slice. Their «special» slices are pretty traditional; sausage (excellent) salad (Very good), tomato and garlic (also very good) and the new tradition, Buffalo Chicken (pretty good). They don’t have crazy slices like some other places, such as chicken marsala, chicken francese, etc.
What catanias does right, I think, is their ingredients and their sauce. Their sausage slice is probably one of the better sausage slices I have had. Crumbled Italian sausage, with a little bit of fennel. Its a nice touch.
But my favorite, is the Sicilian Marinara slice. If you have been to spumoni gardens in Brooklyn, you know the style of pizza i am talking about. It is a square slice, with very garlicky marinara sauce and grated cheese on top. No mozzarella. I get this pizza at least once a week. It is so good, I really do not get tired of it, even after eating it for about 10 years. It is a basic slice with good ingredients. Great sauce, great dough and crust, and thats really it. Thats all it needs though.
I would highly suggest going to catania’s and trying their marinara slice. It is also good reheated on the stove top in a skillet (the best way to reheat pizza).

CATANIA’S JUST CAN’T SEEM TO CAPTURE THAT OLD SPARK!
Welcome to the Tanglewood Shopping Center in North East Yonkers. Former home of the Tanglewood Boys, present home of wannabe gangsters who have watched Goodfellas one too many times. The scene is your typical Italian pizzeria in another Westchester County strip mall on Central [Park] Avenue. Depending on the day, you’re likely to see a different member of the crew posing as the front thug for this suburban outpost. Over the past 35 years the neighborhood has changed, and unfortunately so has this pizzeria.
From the earliest days of my childhood, this was always my neighborhood pizzeria. How much of a better location could this place be? Across Crisfield Street, Nathan’s Hot Dogs and it’s arcade sit in the next lot. This was where it was at when you just wanted to grab a slice and hang out. Whether just for a family of four or for your entire kindergarten class, this was the place where you got your pizza. I would brag to my friends and family that bar none this was where you’d find old style New York City pizza. That was until my cousin, Derek M. (Midlothian, VA), opened my eyes and told me that he wasn’t really all that impressed. I took a hard look at my slice and realized that indeed it did lack that flavor which I had always known and loved.
When ordering my pizza and getting an extra dose of attitude, you better be on top of your game. But lately it seems like their pizza has gotten too greasy while their dough has gotten too gummy. Anyone who has something good to say about this place brags about the calzones, but I’ll always think of pizza as the heart and soul of this place. I think Pete (the owner) has to get back in there more often and let the crew know who is boss because they’ve long since forgotten who they are cooking for.
This goes out to every kid who has peddled their bike around Beaumont Circle. Or anyone who has raced their car on Central [Park] Avenue on a Thursday night or maybe just parked their car at Nathan’s and came to watch the show. Maybe you used to hang out on Bradlees before the cops closed it all down. If any of this sounds familiar or takes you back 15 – 20 years ore more, then you remember the days when Catania’s was at its best. Tell Pete to get back there and show these guys how it’s meant to be done. Tell the wannabe wiseguys to leave the gun and take the cannoli.

Nothing but love for this place. It might be because of their delicious mini calzones. Or their meat slice. Or their fruit punch. Or the fact that I grew up going here and they were the sponsors of my 1989 girl’s softball team. (What a great season that was — celebrating our wins with pizza! Dang, I miss being eleven years-​old!)
Tip: If you order a whole pie, you can ask them to make it with sesame seeds on the bottom of the crust. This makes for a really uniquely good (think nutty & crunchy) pizza.

Best veggie pizza ever! Made with whole wheat crust, spinach leaves, mushrooms/​onions and tomatoes slices on top. Served with dressing on the side. Yum! a meal in itself.
The regular cheese pizza is good as well. I hear the calzones and specialty slices are good, but have never tried them.

Not bad, not great either.
Place is decent, not filthy. The only thing that saved them was that the cheese was good. Pizzas looked alright but not mouth watering. Better than your average hole in the wall NY pizzeria but not worth a return when there is so much better variety around.

Tasty but getting expensive. Been coming here for the last 15 years so they do make good pizza. However the price per slice is now around 3 bucks. You might as well get a specialty slice at that price point. My favorites are the lasagna slice, the veggie, and the buffalo chicken.
They alao make tasty calzones nearly the size of baseballs. You gotta try the veal and pepper and meatball ones. However, I recently bought 6 and it came out to 16.50. According to one review from 07, you could get 20 for $ 20. Now those 20 will apparently cost you $ 55. The price for calzones aren’t listed so I’m not sure if they give discounts for Joey Bag of Donuts types. Regardless, they’re still too good to pass up.

why didn’t I give this 5 stars. Here is why. its not really cheap. There slices are pretty damn big but if you buy a small pie you are absolutely wasting your money because you could buy 3 or 4 single slices for less money obviously and if you lay them next to each other its 10x the size of an entire size of a small pie. Picture this a small pie is like a dominos pie… and if you love pizza then your a person who has killed an entire pie of dominos by yourself. Save your money if you are going there for a slice or two its worth it because its actually very well made the pizza and taste great. Just don’t order pies that’s my only advice.

I didn’t think this pizza was «out of this world» but it was good however, the calzone which I did not taste smelled and looked amazing.
