Looking for somewhere to eat in Helsinki on a Sunday in the midst of the local holiday season is not super easy but we found this little Japanese place. It is perhaps not beautiful but it does have some rugged charm despite the hockey memorabilia put up here and there on the wall. I like the small booths as well as the seating on the tatami mats. The service is to put it nicely typically Finnish. I would not per se say that they are rude but you could almost believe that they would die if they smiled or looked as if they were enjoying their jobs. That said they served the food, made sure to answer any questions and made sure beverages were refilled and all that at a good pace. The menu has all the Japanese dishes one can expect so not only the boring sushi and yakiniku options but also some good stuff like Katsudon(fried pork with egg and onions on top of rice) as well as Tonkatsu. These are the real highlights on the menu, some of the other dishes are disappointing so stick to those as well as some of the sushi and the delicious Tamagoyaki(a sort of egg roll) and you will be happy. The food is by no means superb Japanese food but good enough for me to perhaps return. Prices level is fair to be Finland.

Authentic sushi with good quality fish at fair prices. The set dinners never disappoint, with good variety and interesting options. It’s not the most romantic restaurant, as the decoration tends toward hockey posters and HIM memorabilia but honestly, you’re here for the food. I lived in NYC for 5 years and this is the only place in Helsinki that comes close to the perfectly seasoned rice and fresh fish I expect when paying 25 euros plus for a meal. Just don’t expect to get fawned over by the waitstaff, and concentrate on your plate and you’ll be fine. If you want cheesy nouveau sushi or fusion or fabulous décor this place is not for you!

One of the oldest Japanese restaurant in Helsinki. The palce is small and cosy, and its ambience homely. The service is good and there are a wide range of selection though it might take you some time to read through the menu. They serve authentic Japanese food, so don’t be dissappointed if you can’t find those colorful rolls with many types of filling here. There is even open top stove for Sukiyaki which is cook right in front of you. This might be the only Japanese restaurant in Helsinki with an open top stove. However, be prepare to smell like Japanese food after that. I had been here for lunch and there is also good selection for the lunch package. Definitely worth a visit for both lunch and dinner. Please book for dinner in advance as this place is usually full for dinner. especially on Friday and Sunday night.(close on Sat).

Since I just came back from Japan perhaps I expected that a Japanese restaurant has a Japanese service: polite and customer oriented. THISISNOTTHECASE! The rudest service I have ever had in Finland, and that it is really a high level. Finland is not known by friendly customer service. Food was good, although nothing excellent. Overpriced, though. Place is not kept in the best conditions, and I really felt like saying to the waitress that she should look for another job, waiting tables is not her strength.

maybe its because wife and I went shortly after returning from living in NYC, or because we had the smallest, horriblest table(constantly banged by wait staff as they went by) by the kitchen, but Kabuki didn’t match the recommendations we’d had. Widely reputed to be the best sushi place in Helsinki(I know, maybe the bar not so high for that one), it was a pretty expensive for what we had. yes, the sushi was decent(quality, not value), and certainly worth a visit if you are in Helsinki and craving sushi, but ensure you get a good table, and manage your expectations.
