We enjoyed the view of this building both at night and in the daytime. The square was also an excellent place to hold the New Year Countdown and fireworks show.

Senate Square is where the famous Helsinki Cathedral is. It just happened to be down the block from where I was staying, which was really nice. The square is big and there was always a lot of people here wanding around, sitting on the steps. Plus the square is just a block from the market and it’s by the Museum for the City of Helsinki so it’s a nice central area. The steps up to the church are a bit steep, and it’s cobblestone on the square so I can’t imagine how slippery this might get in the winter with ice, but I was there in fall and it was nice. This is a very nice area of Helsinki and definitely worth checking out if you are here.

The Senaatintori’s(Senate Square) impressive architecture stands out as a unique allegory of political, religious, scientific and commercial powers in the center of Helsinki. Other than the crazy steps I didn’t have the chance to attempt to climb, a statue of Emperor Alexander II stands in the center of the square, to commemorate several of his reforms that increased Finland’s autonomy from Russia. Great meeting point for tourists.

The Senate square has the lovely church in addition to the Senate and library. The architecture is worth visiting and photographing.
