Calzone Café

When we visited we ordered calzone pizza, a must try if you go here. Both the vegetarian and the meat version where lovely. They really know how to prepare good pizza. Staff was polite and seem to have no problem working in such a small, cozy place.

Great, authentic Italian food and very, very reasonably priced. I had a fantastic calzone. This review would be five stars if this tiny little hole-​in-​the-​wall weren’t so cramped. They’re obviously trying to seat as many as possible in a very small space but my eight year old son and I literally had to climb over furniture to sit down. Nonetheless. the next time my little guy wants a calzone we’ll be back.

Was walking through town and saw this little café hidden amongst the rifts and rafts of South William street.
I had never had a calzone before so I decided to try one and am I glad! Waiting staff are lovely and the menu choices are full of variety.
I ordered the veggie calzone which was delightful. The calzones were all premade and therefore couldn’t really be altered.
The staff were suoer friendly and its a great place to catch a bite to eat! Will definatly be back!

I like the outdoor of the place where it has heaters. But i would say not very special for food and coffee and its quit small and packed in the inside.

I stopped by here with my family while they were visiting after a long morning of shopping. It was nice outside, and most places were packed. We came in here because we were hungry, and needed to eat NOW. ha ha. I got their noodle salad, while everyone else at the table got a calzone. Each person at the table said they enjoyed their calzone, but I’ve never had them so can’t comment there. My salad was good, for the first half… But by the time I got towards the bottom half of my salad, it was so drenched in salad dressing that I honestly couldn’t finish it. The flavours were good, but the salad dressing was way too much. Had they cut back on that, I probably would have liked it better.
They do have good outdoor seating, and their coffee was pretty good. So I’d say this would be an okay enough place to stop into if you need to quickly get in and out. But if you’re looking for a great lunch… try somewhere else.

Great price. Not many options. Good for veggies. Coeliac may want to avoid as the mix utensils.

Calzones were yummy! and reasonably priced alongside the drinks… all in all 14 euro for shared prosecco and the calzone… really you can’t ask for more: D

Its afternoon you wander around town and then you start like feeling something mhmm a coffee or a glass of wine… so you check your time just 2pm… mhmm oh well as a friend used to say everything after noon is ok ;)
So once again we end up at Calzone as they do both nice coffee and a glass of pino for about 5 euro. I never tried the food there, as their menu is not that coeliac friendly but my friends love the wraps and vegetarian calzone.
I love their outdoor seating it always makes me smile-​its just so refreshing and even if it is raining as this happens quite often lately, the seats are covered and you are able to sit outside and watch the people getting soaked while you are enjoying your Pino and a good time with your friends

Sigh. Really did not enjoy my lunch here today. First of all when I asked if the wedges were gluten free the waitress said she didn’t know as they come pre packed. First black mark. I ordered chips instead & they were decent, but not as nice as proper home made chips. They were covered in a paprika topping which I wasn’t sure was gluten free so that was a bit stressful. My companions calzone garnered no complaints, but looked a bit meagre to my eyes, like there wasn’t a decent filling inside. I suppose I’m really rating it low for bad service, mediocre food & few gluten free options.

I went to Calzone Café on one of those beautiful evenings we had last week. As it was lovely outside, we decided to eat out at the front, which was quite nice with the lighting and the great atmosphere of South William Street.
I had already eaten before I went out so just had a beer and my friend had a salad. I joined her with a small side.
They were both ok. I really liked the presentation of the meals, especially the salad plates-​really large coffee cups. Really cool. I also saw people drinking lemonade from small pitchers.
All in all, prices looked reasonable but I was slightly annoyed that we had to pay an extra 2 euro for a few slices of baguette for our salads.
Also, because we were outside, there were smokers and because I’m an ex-​smoker, I get extra annoyed at people blowing smoke in my face because there isn’t enough room for them to blow it anywhere else.
I might go back but now that the weather is getting worse, I might embark on a different food experience.

Ok place to have lunch. The outdoor seating is very endearing. The menu, décor, and picnic-​grass theme is very catchy and charming.
I had a panini, some fries, and coffee. Everything was really good except some fries I bit into at the end. There was an odd taste there… so odd it made me want to puke. But I complacently ignored it and pretended like that never happened. I don’t know if it was too many spices or what, but other than that incident, I really liked the place.
The coffee was really good, as I remember it.

You can’t eat the name.
The name of this place sounded quite appealing. I like Calzones. Some of the best pizzas I’ve had have been folded over. Yum.
In as such, I’m sure you can understand why I would be drawn to a place called «Calzone Café».
Service: Pleasant and Polite.
Atmosphere: Annie says it best, seating is like a game of chess. It’s quite cramped, but there’s not much more they could do.
Food: Meh. I’ll explain more in my experience.
Price: A bit dear. One annoying aspect is most meals were one Euro more if you ate in. I asked what the difference was and it was that they gave you a wee side salad. I’ll take a pass and keep my Euro…
My experience:
First, I’m not impressed that the takeaway charge is different than the dine-​in charge. I think the concept is tacky.
I was a bit disappointed to see there was no pepperoni calzone. In fact, most the calzones were a bit ‘unusual’.
I picked the Mexican calzone. The description sounded lovely. Cheese, mexican beans, mince, jalapeños and more. Unfortunately, what I got was a sloppy pocket of warm dough filled with a runny mixture of mince and a watery substance. It tasted very similar to the chilli-​con-​yuck jars at Aldi. Too similar. There were 3 slices of jalapeños. No cheese nor beans to be had anywhere. I dissected my imitation calzone and if there was cheese or bean inside it, it was hidden better than Waldo.
To be fair, my dear friend and colleague had a chicken calzone and was relatively pleased with her selection.
It is likely the other calzones were better, however I am not sure I care to pay to find out.

This place used to be called ‘Lunch’ which was useful when I was walking around Dublin at midday, hungry and with little enough imagination! Fortunately they didn’t disappoint at first impression and I’ve been back numerous times since.
The marketing gurus behind the place have since re-​branded it as Calzone Café which was a fantastic idea since making calzones are what this place does best! I imagine it is as effective as the International Bar being rebranded ‘Jokes’ or Copper Face Jacks being re-​branded ‘Regret’ — it does exactly what it says on the tin, so pop in, grab a calzone (sweet chilli chicken!) and enjoy!

I’ve only ever had coffee here so I can’t judge the food. I’m sure that the stars will bump up once I eat there as the other Unilocalers love it and I trust their opinions!
The coffee is good. The service was also good.
I am NOT a fan of their tables. There are I think 3 long tables. I understand they are trying to be inventive with the small space.
If you want a tip, don’t sit at the table by the wall. The reason being if you are in the inside like I was and people sit at the other end of it; and you have to go the loo or leave you will have to get them to stand and let you out. It’s a pain in the arse to disturb folks who are eating or are mid-​conversation.
Like a game of chess, evaluate your strategy in advance. Think about how long you think you will be there and ease of escape.

Despite the nauseating green colour on the walls outside, Calzone Café is certainly a noteworthy little place to seek refuge from the frenzied Dublin streets.
The meat and cheese platter looked really rather imperial. With grand slices of cheese and meat, thickly sliced crusty bread and an antique bottle that looked like the type Victorians would store ointments in all presented on a sturdy oak tray alike that any refined Butler would carry meals on, it was a sure fire hit!
The waiters and waitresses were in especially good humour and were always on hand to tender to your needs. Always happy to help, you never seem like you’re being bothersome when you ask them for more water or the bill and suchlike.
We enjoyed a great bottle of red wine rich in fruity flavours that served to round off this pleasant lunch with a bang.

Calzone is the perfect spot for a light bite and a coffee or glass of wine on a Friday evening. There’s little to mark the food out from the competition in the area (though the calzones are very popular) but there’s always a friendly atmosphere, the wine by the glass is really reasonably priced, and the last few times I’ve been there after work they’ve had some live music provided by one man and his guitar which was very pleasant indeed.
South William Street is currently the catwalk for Dublin’s bold and beautiful, and the heated streetside seating area is an opportunistic place to watch them saunter by.

I really like hanging out at Calzone Café — the food is great, the vibe is nice, the outdoor area is cute and indoors is painted a funky green and has wall decos that remind me of an indoor rock-​climbing centre I frequented as a teenager (??)
Once a friend and I spent the best part of a Friday evening soaking up the relaxed weekday-​to-​weekend transition that was occurring in South William Street at the time. It was quite the experience.
There were the beginnings of a party in the first floor apartment opposite Calzone. We watched, dumbstruck, as man after (gorgeous) man made his way into the small apartment. One party I’d kill to be invited to…
The lady at the table next to ours obviously thought so too, because she snatched rose from the vase on her table, walked out into the middle of the street, and attempted to throw it in one of the open windows into the apartment of good-​looking men. I love the way Dubliners can be so uninhibited… it’s a refreshing escape from the practised coolness of self-​conscious people the world over.
Definitely a restaurant I recommend trying — take a girlfriend or two and have girly chats over a bottle of wine and a pizza. Impressive breakfast menu too, and they serve wedges here! Yay!

I’d have to agree with Judith on this one, Calzone café is great spot to get some food on the go at any time of the day. Formerly known as Lunch! They also have a branch near Pearse street DART station.
Calzone is also great for a fry up on a weekend morning. The only thing going against the place is thats its tiny. So expect to be getting to know the person beside you more then you might have wanted.
The outdoor seating is great though and the heaters a great touch on the, frequently cold, Dublin days.

We visited this place on a summers evening and found a table outside to sit at, it was busy and the street was busy too which was great for people watching. The mixed cheese and meat platter was delicious and great starter for two, we followed that with a goats cheese salad and a calzone, both were very nice and reasonably sized. The wine wasnt nice but that was just a bad choice on my part. There was a live artist strumming on a spanish guitar which we could here from inside. The waitress was in good spirits and it wasnt all that pricey.
