Saint Patrick’s Cathedral

An amazing building. Beautiful craftsmanship to be seen inside. Rich in history to explore inside as well. Definitely would recommend one check it out when in Dublin.
I don’t mind paying the entrance fee, but right after the paying booth at the entrance is a dropbox that is saying all donations are welcome, which is cheeky at best. Cheeky is not an adjective a church should take pride in.

Saint Patrick’s is the other Cathedral in Dublin, along with Christ Church and is designated the National Cathedral.
We found St Pat’s to be equally beautiful to Christ Church and had an opportunity to enjoy Evensong service at 5 pm. As previously noted in my review of Christ Church, Evensong is the singing of evening service by the Choir including the Song of Simeon.
We found it very spiritual, with the Choir voices continuing to echo off the church walls throughout.

One historical note. During the English Civil War and the Nine Year War, Saint Patrick was desecrated by Oliver Crowell. He considered Anglicans no better than Roman Catholics, so he decided to keep his horses in the Naïve.
Come for the Evensong, but stay for the history. You’ll be glad you did.

Visited April 2015: «Engulfed in History the moment you walk in.»
St Patrick’s Cathedral (Ard Eaglais Naomh Pádraig) is a short walk from Dublin Castle, roughly 5 minutes. We also passed the Dublin City Hall, and Christ Church Cathedral — which I of course took pictures of. We paid our admission fee online, and when we presented our eticket, we were given a leaflet. In there they talk about the different tombs and monuments to see, separated by location. There’s even a map, showing you each tomb/​monument discussed by corresponding number. I took pictures of the Celtic grave slab, the tile flooring that reminded me of Spanish tiles (different color variation), status of great figures, and showing the colossal size of the cathedral. It still astonishes me how these buildings were erected in 1100 or 1300 AD.

Even though I’ve lived in Dublin all my life I’ve never been here until we made it part of Culture Night 2015.
The building is in the shape of a cross. There really is so much to see here and there is such a feeling of history as you wander through. Highlight for me here was the model of the building and the bust of Jonathan Swift. This should definitely be a must do for any tourists or even native Dubliners who have never been.

I really enjoyed visiting this cathedral on my trip to Ireland. It was beautiful and full of information and historical items. The staff were nice and helpful. The cathedral also has a nice little gift shop. The admission cost was fair due to the amount of items curated.

This place is well worth the money. They have a huge amount of really interesting artifacts and historical stories from what is usually an unrepresented perspective on irelands past.
All the world war one stuff was really well put together. The old war monuments were really fascinating to see. As my tour was at the end of the day there was a childrens choir practicing as i left. They were brilliant.

Note: This is a review of the bathroom facilities at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, alone. I dare not review the cathedral, itself, for fear of justifiable retaliation by God.
So, sometimes people drink when they’re in Ireland, and sometimes, when you drink a lot the night before, you find you might feel a need to stay close to bathrooms the next day. While out and about in Dublin, sight-​seeing, I found myself with an urgent need to find a bathroom facility, and the closest one around that appeared to be open was the public restroom at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, so reluctantly, I used it.
I was pleasantly surprised that such an historic location had perfectly functional bathroom facilities! They were clean, and cozy, where by cozy, I mean they were obviously originally built for Leprechauns. Now, I’m not a leprechaun, so the toilet seat was a little low for me, and the stall door touched my knees while I did my business, but, really, that’s my fault. I could easily have shortened myself years prior by eating less protein, so I have only myself to blame for my unnatural height. If one is above 5′ in height, and claustrophobic, one might want to find another men’s room, but if you’re flexible or short, you should find these perfectly serviceable.

Of the cathedrals in Dublin St. Patrick’s is the worth it one. Especially since you have to pay to enter the cathedrals around here (I’m so against admission charges for churches — donations please). This cathedral offers a lot of interesting Irish history — flags from old battles, statues, and of course the story of St. Patrick himself being linked to the church.
What I’m really saying here: if you’re going to pay admission to view a cathedral in town, pay for this one. It’s gorgeous, it’s functional (you can pray and meditate), and there’s a beautiful park, St. Patrick’s Park, right beside it.

Beautiful and huge. The ending location of the st Patrick’s day parade. Beautiful bells ringing. Part of the greening of the city. I didn’t get to make it inside this trip but next time I am there (cuz I will for sure be back) I’m going in!

Ah les visites de cathédrales… Y en a que ça botte et d’autres pas mais il faut bien avouer une chose, c’est que c’est une activité qu’on peut faire par n’importe quel temps… En été, il y fait bien frais et c’est le moment propice pour un petit «cool-​down», en hiver, en cas de pluie, de neige ou de vent, c’est le bon plan pour s’abriter!
Je n’ai pas vraiment de préférence pour l’une ou l’autre cathédrale/​église que j’ai eu l’occasion de voir. Je trouve, personnellement, que tous les batiments du genre ont un charme, un quelque chose de grand et de somptueux. Lors de notre trip à Dublin, par une journée pluvieuse et venteuse, nous avons donc décidé que c’était le moment propice pour faire la Cathedrale Saint Patrick qui n’a selon moi, rien à envier à Notre Dame de Paris par exemple! De beaux vitraux, une crypte prestigieuse et de petites chapelles viennent former ici un joli ensemble.
Point de vue pratique, le prix d’entrée s’élève à 6 € par adulte et est, en partie, compréhensible: il faut entretenir l’édifice, développer des brochures, promouvoir les moyens d’attirer les touristes,… Je n’ai découvert qu’après ma visite qu’une app avait été créée pour offrir aux visiteurs un tour guidé… Dommage!

I liked the movie– it was nice to watch before checking out the entire Church– gave a really nice background and history. It is nice to visit both Cathedrals and see the difference in architecture.

Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is the largest church in Ireland. The church dates back to the 5^th Century, but the building that stands today was built between 1191 and 1270. Major restoration occurred in the 1870’s to prevent the church from collapsing so most of the building and décor dates back from the Victorian era.
Every nook and cranny of St. Patrick’s Cathedral is crammed with historical relics, art and statues. The most noteworthy sights at the church include Jonathan Swift’s and Esther Johnson’s graves in the Cathedral and the remains of a well that was believed to be the same well used by St. Patrick in the 5^th century to baptize Christian converts.
St. Patrick’s Cathedral receives no state funding so there is a $ 5.50 euro fee to tourists who wish to visit the Cathedral outside of service times. Ticket sales and donations are used to help preserve this historical landmark. There is no fee to worship and pray during service times. If you have purchased a Dublin Pass
then entry to the church is free.
TIP: Stop by on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 — 7:30pm to hear the bell ringers practice.

For my next car, do I buy a Aston Martin or a Ferrari? Similar class, performance and luxury? What if I told you the Ferrari was free, but the Aston Martin you had to pay for? Most logical humans would chose the Ferrari…
Cool, groovy, gothic exterior and for 5.50 euro ($ 7.50) you get to see the equally cool, groovy, gothic interior. No access to the tower. However, I also spent 2 weeks in Italy six months ago. The Italian churches were all free to get into (I usually donated a euro or 2) and have much cooler artwork and sculptures.
So if you’ve been to Italy, Saint Patricks isn’t that big of a deal; skippable if you’re pressed for time in Dublin. But if you’ve never been to Italy, its worth a look. Or if you’re a cheap chump like the guy who bailed out in front of me in line, just check out the exterior and gardens.

I am only giving this a low rating because they charge you money to come into the church to say a prayer. There’s something really wrong with that in my book. The touristy gift shop right in the church reminded me of something Christ might throw out of His house if He were amongst us. Other than that, it’s a beautiful cathedral.

It has to be one of the spots you visit if you are in Dublin. There is a fee to visit, which is a little sad because if you did want to come and worship it should be free to do so. Personally, it should be ore like donation type of thing, just like when you pass the offering plate. It’s really quite beautiful inside. There’s just so much history here, and all the details can be quite overwhelming. It was humbling to see one of the priests/​cardinals in the area by the pulpit cleaning items and such. It’s crazy to think that people still go to this church now for all the time that it has existed.

I’m not sure if there’s any other place on earth with so much history condensed into one area. Being the history buff I am I loved every second I spent here. Every window, floor tile, piece of art, and statue has a story to tell, and they are all done with exquisite detail.
Jonathan Swift is buried here… how cool is that? There are helmets on display from the Knights of Saint Patrick, which was quite a sight to behold. Saint Patrick’s baptismal font is on display as well. The artifacts on this building, which is stunningly beautiful in its own right, is a must see for any tourist in Ireland.
I’m docking one star for having a gift shop in the middle of a cathedral. Call me old fashioned, but I shouldn’t be able to buy a box of chocolate that says «thanks for watching the dog» in such a sacred place.

Its good to know that I am not religious whatsoever. Its just not me. But going to Saint Patricks Cathedral was moving. Its huge in there. It was just beautiful. Truly a must see.
I dont know how much it costs since I was in a tour group, but whatever it is, it is worth it.
Its not like the churches we are used to. here in the US. Its so different and amazing.

After downing all those pints of Guinness at the Storehouse’s Gravity Bar, you probably have a need to perform a penance for your sins, even if you’re not Catholic, so why not take a walk to Ireland’s largest church and do just that? The connection with Guinness is not accidental since Benjamin Guinness, the brewery’s founder, funded the cathedral’s major reconstruction in the middle of the 19^th century. His legacy is a controversial stained glass emblazoned with the slogan: «I was thirsty and ye gave me drink.» Regardless the church needed repair desperately since it was originally built in 1191.
Unfortunately much of its earlier history was consequently lost in the renovation as little is known as to how much of the current building is genuinely medieval and how much is Victorian pastiche. Today, although not located in the most desirable part of town and a bit of trek from the city center, the cathedral is still worthy of a stop as it’s full of interesting tombs and memorials including the remnants of a «Holy Well» where St. Patrick supposedly baptized the first local converts. There is an admission fee for tourists like myself (€ 5.50) but not for regular worshipers. However, the park is free to anyone and offers a welcome respite amid the colorful flower beds before you have to get back on the Dublin Bus again.

Lovely grounds — great place to wander around on a sunny break in the rain — so many parents bring their toddlers to play that I felt like a fairy-​tale giant.
I have to admit I balked at paying the entrance fee and so I was satisfied for the time being by walking the grounds and around the block, just to appreciate the exterior. When I got home to write my Unilocal review, I read some of the other reviews and now regret not paying the 5.50 Euros to get a look around inside… Just an FYI for folks who might actually be researching in advance!

Where else can you go for € 5.50 to see a 13^th century cathedral?
It is a massive structure, both inside and out. You may download walking guides of St. Patrick’s before you arrive (from their website), or you can wait till you get there; they have some available when you enter the building.
I enjoy visiting different cathedrals in my travels, mainly for the history behind it. This one met my expectations and it was interesting to learn about the different knights of St. Patrick
and the park outside is beautiful.
You won’t be disappointed.
