So, my boyfriend and I stayed at the Gibson Hotel which is right next door to this wheel — we could look out our window and see it that’s how close we were. Well, it was a beautiful site at night, all lite up and slowly moving around, it made the atmosphere of the room very romantic. Well, then we went on the wheel the next day and it was sort of a disappointment. You go around a few times, we couldn’t get the audio to work until the very end(so we missed all of the commentary about what we were seeing) and the views were okay…(they were similar to what we had at our hotel). Personally, I would skip the wheel and go spend that money on a drink.

So is the Dublin Wheel(it’s originally the Belfast Wheel but we stole it) wheely good? Ba-dum tish. sorry bad pun :( On their website they describe the Wheel as «is set to become one of the city’s leading tourist attractions and will offer unparalleled views across the city» well I can tell you now the views are far from unparalleled, unless you like looking at the roof of the O2 and the docklands. It’s not all bad don’t get me wrong. Myself and my girlfriend arrived on a quiet sat evening just before dusk. There was a trickle of people getting on the wheel. We had talked about going on the wheel for a while even though we heard mixed reviews of the view. Tickets are € 9 for a normal booth and you get to go 3 times around. You can also book private booths at about € 55 and VIP booths for € 75 though I don’t know the difference or what the VIP one entails. We had the booth to ourselves anyway. The booths are very comfortable and there is a voiceover describing the different views and what you are looking at from one of the radio DJ’s which we didn’t bother with. The views aren’t spectacular. The wall and the roof of the O2(I hate calling it this, will they just revert to The Point when O2 decide they can’t afford the naming rights anymore!?) are right to your left and the docklands to your immediate left. There is a beautiful view of Landsdowne/Aviva Stadium straight ahead and a lovely view of Dublin Bay and the Poolbeg chimneys. You can see the Beckett Bridge clearly. Otherwise everything else is a little far out. Maybe they provide binoculars in each booth? But I didn’t not enjoy it. It was a nice little romantic thing to do, and I loved the fact it was so quiet around the area. My girl enjoyed too but questioned the value of it for € 9.

Out one window all you see is loading docks BUT out another you can almost see into Aviva stadium! Due to it being a cool looking stadium this was really nice in and of itself. Out another window you just see North Dublin. which does not have skyscrapers so it was pretty boring. Finally, out the side facing the rest of Dublin you can see down the Liffey which is really nice, especially with the newer Dockland buildings. Maybe if they ever finish the rest of the buildings it will be really nice. There is an audio guide, but it runs out of things to say and starts over about halfway though the turns you get to go around.

When I heard the Dublin Wheel was open for business, a fellow Unilocaler and I grabbed our pocket money and ran to the heart of the Docklands where it is located and with too much enthusiasm ran to the top of the queue, jumping in to the capsule and over screams of excitement challenging each other over who would be the first to review this spectacular new tourist attraction. So in your face Susan I win!!! Okay so it didn’t happen like that and if it did I can understand the feeling of pity ye must have for us right now. It was more like taking a lazy Sunday afternoon wander around the Point Village market. After exhausting all that can be done there we ended up around the Dublin Wheel. Like two curious cats we circled it, checked out the queue, circled it again, until we taught why not. It costs 9euro per person. You can get a V.I.P capsule for 75euro or with champagne for 95euro. Due to it’s location you cannot get a great view of the Dublin Skyline just the area around the Docklands. Each capsule has an audio commentary on landmarks of the city and you get to go around three whole times!!! It is worth a check out though especially if you have visitors in town, just for the novelty factor, and you get to enjoy the Point Village market after your whole dizzy height experience.
