Will not stop text spamming me through UCD Ents. Don’t ever recall giving them my number, or making it available to marketing agencies. FYI, TramCo: Text spamming is scummy. Leave me alone(!)

I was very confused with this spot. It’s huge. Selection of home brews, a lot of which were not available. A bartender with a superb mohawk. The Bangles and best of ’80’s playing whilst projections of Tiananmen Square protests showed. It was rather early when we went here to kill time with a pint before the cinema. The big bouncer that appeared to say goodbye as we left gave me a clue as to the crowd that they expected later. After the cinema we saw the crowd. It was cold as in see your breath type of cold yet the fearless cheap alcohol warriors marched on to Tramco. The lads aka man boys puffed out their chests and I marveled at their copious use of hair gel. The girls aka barely legal stumbled like new born foals learning to walk except in their case a bottle of cheap vodka, porn heels, tight dress and no coat will cause ones body to buck up in protest. I felt rather maternal and mad at the sight and wanted to scream at them all, «Get the feck up those stairs and stop dressing like a whore. And you better be on the pill, I don’t want to be a granny.»

When I first moved to Rathmines in 2006 Tramco was a notorious hot spot for the secondary school set and freshers and if you were over the age of 18 you’d be a bit embarrassed to go inside. Over the years it calmed down and a bit and then completely closed to come back as the new Tramco Brewery. Admittedly the décor is some weird combination of southwest tex mex and traditional Irish pub, but it’s a good spot for a few cheap drinks before heading on into town. True to its new title of ‘brewery’, Tramco now has on its taps it’s own assortment of microbrews from your classic pilsner to a stout. Since the brews don’t have the same commercial presence of some better known beers and stouts they’re quite a bit cheaper and for a poor student that makes them all the more tasty. An added bonus for the student on a budget, or really anybody on a budget as we all are now, I was in Tramco a few fridays ago and they were giving away free burgers and hot dogs in the smoking area in the back. They’ve also added some live music and the guys were actually quite good. Now unfortunately as Ronan C. pointed out in his review it has been a bit quiet, so I wouldn’t suggest it for a mad night out, but like I said definitely for a bit of a pre-night out drinking session.

I think Tramco is where you end up if you live in or near Rathmines and you’re drunk! The last time I was there I was out for dinner with a work crowd and popped in late in the night — and yes, you’ve guessed it, we were drunk! It was almost empty, which was a tad depressing, but we were having our own fun. The smoking area was in a garage but as far as I know it’s changed since then. It would want to! A friend of mine was there more recently and she had a hoot so that’s good to know for the next time I’m in the neighbourhood!

Nearly hidden all the way down in Rathmines, Tramco is an absolute monster of a club. It caters to the spill over from locals in Rathmines and at the end of Camden, as well as regular student nights. Because it’s a bit out of the way you can expect some decent prices and deals. I had one really bad experience here though. We had a work night out and turned out to be the only ones there-poxy. Apparently it’s a micro brewery too, haven’t tried any of their brews yet though.

Pub type place by day, club type place by night. I used to enjoy coming here but I guess I outgrew the people who come here. I would say that it’s a very disco type place, with a very small dancefloor for the kids to show off their moves. The place itself looks really nice, very modern and is usually really clean. The staff too are sound enough and there are often some decent promotions of drinks(the lower end of the beer spectrum ale’s are often on discount). I will say if you’re older than 25 you are most likely to stick out like a sore thumb. The good things are that there will always be taxis outside here and there are loads of places to grab food once the place closes.

I’m going to be brutally honest — clubs in Dublin are for the most part rubbish. They are over priced, small, sweaty and the clientele verge between knacker chic or bogger chic. As a small city, the music policy has to be varied enough to attract large numbers, so niche clubbing is out. In the spirit of this, one must choose wisely when picking a disco bar to spend the evening in. Tram Co. in Rathmines is somehow the same, but different. During the day, it’s almost pub like, serves food and offers plenty of opportunity for relaxing in the heated beer garden. At night it comes alive. There are roughly three floors, all arranged in circles looking down on an elevated, mirrored dance floor and a snazzy silver bar. Whereas it used to be an ode to the colour brown, it is now sleek, shiny and welcoming all at once. It manages to be airy without being cavernous. Even when the dance floor is packed out, there’s still usually a chance of grabbing a table on one of the upper floors. The music is charty and fun, without veering too much towards the nostalgic or the dreaded r’ n’ b. Leaping around the empty dance floor at the start of the night in front of the full length mirrors is pure bliss in itself and one can almost forgive the DJ for the final half an hour lapse into Abba medleys and«Build me up Buttercup». If you want to dance to chart music, amongst a young crowd and pretend you’re at a school disco — this is the place to be. There’s not even a sniff of pretension or irony in the air — it’s just plain fun!
