The Westin Excelsior

When I was in the taxi right in form of the hotel, before I could open the door a doorman opened it for me. When I first walked in the hotel had an amazing vibe and beautiful setting. The receptionist was great. She checked me in very fast and gave me a great room. When I asked them to bring water to my room it came in 2 minutes. Amazing. This hotel is the best in Rome. It has great service, great food and a great vibe.

Old falling apart hotel that needs a major refresh. Door plate feel of during the night and the furniture was stained and icky. Beautiful lobby area… but you don’t sleep there.

Undecided between giving this place a three or four star rating. When we stayed, our room was showing its age, although front desk service was pretty good and check-​in was very quick (a pretty big deal, as we were part of a large cruise group). The hotel’s location is also pretty good, located near the American embassy, Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain.
As part of our cruise, we were provided a free hot breakfast, but that was served in a ballroom and so we never had a chance to actually check out the restaurant on premises.

Got upgraded for my 4 nights stay at this hotel and had this huge suite! While the suite itself is classic, I fell in love with the spacious bathroom and the breakfast buffet. Would definitely recommend this hotel in the middle of town.

Well, I’m back again, and the hotel is still lovely, and the soup is still 20 – 22 euros. So, you know. Don’t crave room service soup unless you have deep pockets.
And I hate to be nitpicky Marc, but the showers aren’t fixed either — they still go hot and cold.

Stayed at this Westin for 4 days at the end of a trip to Europe (which included Westins in Paris, Venice & Florence) and this was by far our favorite one.
Our room had lofty ceilings and a balcony facing the American Embassy. The temperature settings were easy for us to understand and there were always plenty of towels.
The breakfast buffet was expansive and a solid deal. It was also lovely to have happy hour drinks outside at the Downey café (they give some complimentary appetizers) or after dinner drinks in the hotel lobby (complete with live music). The restaurants in the surrounding area were delicious and the concierge had great suggestions.

Beautiful old world charm, italian marble and chandeliers everwhere. A few steps from the walls of Rome and Villa Borghese park. Service is very good and accomodated us perfectly. Our room had a balcony. Bathrooms are very big. Beds are comfortable. Walking distance to great shopping.

We were in Rome for Easter week and decided to stay at the Westin for three nights, and we’re happy we did! Upon check-​in, our room was not ready yet, which was somewhat frustrating. However, after a relatively short wait, we were escorted up to our room and pleasantly surprised by our room upgrade! We had a street view room, with a beautiful balcony that we could’ve sat on all day and just watched life pass us by!
The hotel is in a great location, walking distance to the Spanish steps and shops, as well as the Trevi Fountain, if you have energy to do so!
The lobby bar is beautifully done, with a great selection of drinks!!! In addition, we used the gym which was a bit hot, but had all the amenities needed, and was just perfect.
Great hotel, great staff, and great location!

I’m thoroughly enjoying my stay here so far. The staff is very nice and the room is beautifully decorated. Great location for a quick walk or short taxi to some of the major landmarks.

A luxury experience with an old school design. I prefer functionality to the golden finishing and smoked glasses but I have to admit that the hotel makes for a pleasurable stay. First off, it’s massive, which is nothing short of impressive given the fancy location. Secondly, you have all the perks your wallet is willing to pay for, including a legit fitness center with pool. A tiny pool, granted, but better than nothing.
It really doesn’t strike me as a business-​friendly hotel, for work I’d go somewhere else. For a vacation with all the comforts, smack in the center of Via Veneto, then you’re in the right place. Grandiose architecture, steps away from Piazza di Spagna or Villa Borghese.
It’s a Westin, so all SPG point-​horses will feel at home. What really struck me was the breakfast buffet, a feast for those with no dietary restrictions. Name a food, it’s there, although with a clear Italian-​ness to it: local cold cuts, local sweets, even local yogurts. Nothing wrong with that.
Not cheap, not bad at all.

Staff is friendly just inept.
Price is not an issue for me, my wife is a Starwood hotel member and we stayed here for free. We have stayed in starwoods all over the world from Los Angeles to Athens.
This one sucks.
Here is what makes it different from other Starwood properties that run circles around this one.
You call the front desk, concierge, or room service, it rings about 30 times before someone answers.
They forget basic but necessary things, forgot to bring sugar for the coffee with room service about half of the ten times we ordered it.
They don’t change currency like other starwoods and Westins in Europe.
Their concierge was relatively unhelpful and expressed some unconfidence in being able to get a dinner reservation for me on a weeknight a day in advance, at an average restaurant nearby.
The water in the shower is a constant yo yo from freezing cold to scalding.
The hotel’s location is less than ideal.
The staff would ring the doorbell of the room repeatedly in the space of 20 seconds when delivering anything to the room, as if annoyed by how long it took to answer the door.
Twice in the evening the staff rung the doorbell, and it was the wrong room.
I would rather pay 300 $ a night and stay in a 3 – 4 star hotel than stay in this 5 star hotel for free

I did not stay as a guest of the Westin Excelsior. However, I did visit the bar one afternoon. I was very impressed with our bartender. He was friendly and made excellent drinks. I’m not sure who drinks margaritas in Rome but he definitely made one that knocked my socks off. Between that and some Proseccos, my husband and I had a great time resting our tired feet at the bar. Everyone was friendly and I do believe we had one of the «top three bartenders in Rome» — or at least that is what we were told! Great time and beautiful lobby/​common areas.

I see where Trip Advisor ranks the Westin Excelsior the 295^th best hotel in Rome. That ludicrous rating is kind of like saying that Lionel Messi is the 295^th best footballer in Argentina! Of course, virtually all the negatives have to do with price so let me address that first: 5 star hotels in major cities are EXPENSIVE! If you’re not prepared to pay $ 500+ per night you should check out 3 and 4 star alternatives folks! For me, the Westin Excelsior is one of the top ten hotels in the world, a great value for the money. I’m here now for my second visit and everything is perfect! Wonderful oversized room, great service, excellent location — my wife and I couldn’t ask for a more luxurious enjoyable honeymoon holiday. From the moment we arrived the entire staff couldn’t be more accommodating, even gifting us with a lovely bottle of champagne for our special occasion! So if you’re looking for a true five star hotel in a great location for touring the sites or just kicking back forget those nonsensical Trip Advisor ratings and book a room at the Westin Excelsior — you won’t be disappointed!

Overpriced. Lack of enthusiasm on part of staff. Location and dipping pool were the only good features of the hotel. Concierge staff as adequate. Need to retrain staff on culture?

Hotel was beautiful. Very old world charm. Great location — 5 mins from Spanish steps and the best shopping in Rome. Dined at hotel restaurant — H. Pizza and artichoke salad was amazing.

a beautiful hotel in a lovely part of Rome, Via Veneto. i stayed here with my family who were visiting from the states. We got two suites that connected. The décor of the whole hotel and rooms is beautiful. Rooms are HUGE and the beds super comfortable with luxurious bathrooms and helpful service. The staff is also kid friendly. we had one running around all over the hotel & the staff didn’t seem to mind at all (ha). i never got a chance to check out the amentities such as the jacuzzi, bar or any of the restaurants. the lobby lounge is grand and unfortunately this is the only place where you can get free wifi. i would think for the price you pay to stay at this hotel it would include free wifi in the rooms?
location is great. your close (walking distance) to a handful of the highlights to be seen in Rome. Also a market about 3 blocks away.

An old but lovely hotel in an ideal location on Via Veneto. The staff was friendly and helpful, with the strange exception of the concierge who was imperious and acted as if being asked for simple directions was a chore for him. The rooms are very large for a hotel in Rome and comfortable. There are only a couple elevators so it can be a long wait for one. It’s expensive but I highly recommend it.

Headed over here after our stay at the Westin in Paris. The hotel rooms are A LOT bigger here nad just gorgeous!!! There are a lot of places to walk to around this hotel for dinner, drinks, etc! It’s a beautful hotel. The staff was friendly. Now the food isn’t as good here as it was in Paris Westin. But the bar was absolutely gorgeous! And everyone working in the bar was soooo sweet and helpful! The bathrooms are big with a baday’s! They have A LOT more closet space then the Westin in Paris also! This hotel was great!

Ive stayed here several times over the last 10 years and have always been satisfied. The rooms are quite large for Rome and the Heavenly beds by Westin are a god-​send after a long day of work or site seeing.
The location is good for seeing the sites of Rome, the Spanish steps are quite close and serve as a good jumping off for spending a few days as a tourist in Rome. A stroll down Via Veneto take you to piazza barberini which is another great spot to start a day of site seeing.
I was not impressed with the hotel restaurant or bar but there are many places within a 15 minute walk of the hotel.
I do agree that the Excelsior is becoming a bit shabby but I still prefer the Excelsior to the other hotels in Rome that I have stayed in.

When in Rome… you should stay at the Excelsior. This hotel is one of my absolute favorites. I stayed in a sweet junior suite last time I went to visit family and the hotel is spectacular. It is historic but has a lot of classic details: fine antique furniture, thick silk drapes, white crown molding, chandeliers, Empire style furniture and much more. You feel like royalty when you walk through the lobby.
The service is 5 star. White glove doormen and extremely knowledgeable staff. It may be located in a tourist neighborhood but it was a good location to get to most sights and other neighborhoods. The dining areas were also exquisite and we had meals both in the hotel and the surrounding area. The prices start at around $ 360 USD per night (not during busy season) so be prepared to pay big bucks but I truly enjoyed my stay there!

Que de dorures, de cristal, de faux luxe… il y en a vraiment trop. Cet hotel n’est plus à la hauteur et le fait que Stallone y descende quand il vient à Rome est loin d’être une bonne référence.
