An absolute must in Venice! Great collection put together by a remarkable woman, collector, supporter of the arts and philanthropist! Beautiful open location just by the Canal Grande! Highly recommended!

Extremely impressive collection of Jackson Pollack’s work. You will walk through Peggy’s home and find works in her collection in the same place as they were when she occupied the home along the Grand Canal. Worth the stop for sure, and is a great excuse to leave the hustle and bustle of st Mark’s square. Totally glad we spent our time in Venice there.

I was extremely impressed with the collections. Not only that I’ve encountered some of the greatest works in history, but also I have seen (in disbelief) my one favorite piece by Georges Braque, «The Poet». After doing a lot of research out of passion and the vast amount of analysis I have executed on the Cubist pioneers and their oeuvres since my school years, I have finally witnessed, right in front of me — the work that I’ve admired for a long time. Along with the other cubist works, there was another one of Braque’s exquisite work, Picasso’s, as well as Leger’s work. Some collections were showcased in an idyllic house/​dining room setting.
The collections are somewhat chronological in their eras; from cubism (analytical and synthetic), Giacomo Balla’s Futurism, abstract works by Kandinsky and Lissitzky, to modern movement of Suprematism (De stijl’s Piet Mondrian and Theo Van Doesberg) the famous Charles Pollock and Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings, as well as surrealism. I have also witnessed several Pollock’s drip paintings and the mural. Seeing a lot of Biennale’s contemporary work, the Guggenheim museum was definitely a way to take a break from the aesthetically conceptual and challenging contemporary practice. It was very uplifting!

This was one of the highlights of my single day in Venice. After a long, warm afternoon of seeing the must-​see Venice stuff like the Piazza San Marco, my brother and I walked through the city to find this museum and were not disappointed.
It’s a lovely space to wander around because it’s a home, not a serpentine museum. Every room felt open and fresh and you could really get up close to some magnificent works of art by Mondrian, Picasso, Dali, and many more. There’s a small courtyard that opens right onto the Grand Canal, which was great for people-​watching, and many auxiliary galleries with temporary collections and exhibits. One had a show on Jackson Pollack and his brother, with lots of interactive bits on how the art was transported and maintained. The shop was cute and we bought a few postcards with our favorite works of art.
There was no walking guide, but for 5 € we got a more general pamphlet which explained the different art movements and the artists’ role in history. It was an enjoyable read for people like my brother and me who aren’t art buffs. There was an audio guide that we didn’t try. Restrooms throughout the complex.
I’ll definitely come back!

One of the most refreshing art galleries I’ve ever visited. An unmissable attraction while in Venice. Beautiful canal side location, and the sculpture garden is quite unlike any I’ve previously seen. I love the history of the place, it having been Peggy’s Venice palazzo, looks out for the info panels in the galleries. I particularly loved the presentation of the Calder’s in the collection. Wonderful!

Wunderschönes Museum, absolut traumhaft gelegen, grenzgeniale Exponate … man kommt aus den Superlativen gar nicht heraus!

A nice way to enjoy art in a beautiful environment. Peggy’s collection has a good combination of both classics and more modern art. It also includes a beautiful view of the grand Canal and a superb garden with a whole variety of sculptures. Including a saucy one on a horse.

After our tour of the Palazzo Ducale and Lunch, Erin & Jim wanted to go inside the Basilica Cattedrale Patriarcale di San Marco for a closer look, while Gayle and I were itching to see the Peggy Guggenheim collection. I love historical churches too and after all, we do have plans to walk the Camino de Santiago next year (Portuguese Way). Yet, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and lots of «you must see» advice was calling our name.
Gayle and I enjoyed a leisurely walk over, which included traversing the Ponte dell’Accademia and enjoying the view of Canal Grande. You can see the Museum from the Bridge. The collection is housed in the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, an 18^th-​century palace, which was Guggenheim’s home. The Museum was originally the private collection of the American heiress Peggy Guggenheim, who began displaying the artworks to the public seasonally in 1951. After her death in 1979. it passed to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, which eventually opened the collection year-​round.
Gayle and I thoroughly enjoyed our too short visit. I particularly liked the outdoor areas including water-​side and the sculpture garden. The inside galleries were well appointed and interesting, especially when I tried to overlay what the House looked like before it became a Museum. The collection is varied, which is what you might expect from these series of private collaborations. There are big names and small represented and always an interesting angle as approached them in our own unique ways.
Our visit to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection was time and money well spent. In a City full of centuries old history and culture, this place should fit right in to any Venice-​based travel plan. And in the case of companions who want to see something else in Venezia, it was just a simple matter of easily meeting up later at the nearby Zattere.

Peggy Guggenheim was a very well connected (and very wealthy) woman with superior taste in art. She married the artist Max Ernst and used her connections and her fortune to build one of the best personal collections of early 20^th century Art you’ll find anywhere. All the big names here: Dali, Magritte, Tanguy, Giorgio de Chirico, Duchamp, Picasso, Miro, Klee, Pollock, Max Ernst (of course) and more!
And these aren’t secondary works either, these are Major Works by Major Artists, many that you have undoubtedly seen in books. This is your chance to see them in person!
Her home /​museum is gorgeous. It was nice wandering through the rooms, trying to imagine what it was like when she lived there and it was furnished. It’s a bit smaller than you may expect but that just means you’ll have a more intimate experience with the art than you’d normally have.
This is a Must See for any art lover.

At first I didn’t want to «waste» my vacation time in Venice by going to this museum. I figured, why the heck should I pay to see some great American artworks after I flew all this way to Italy? Well, if you are a fan of abstract expressionism (in particular Calder or Jackson Pollock), then this museum is a MUST SEE.
Ms. Guggenheim and I share a similar taste in art so I was in heaven at this museum! The Jackson Pollock room brought me to my knees — thankfully there’s a couch in there so you can sit down and contemplate the works.
Even if this type of artwork isn’t your cup of tea, you will surely love the view from the «front yard» overlooking the Grand Canal. The museum usually hosts a couple of special exhibits that are included with your admission ticket; and don’t miss the lovely sculpture garden!

This is an awesome collection of modern art. It’s a must see if you have the time even if the only name you know is Picasso.

Idéalement situé dans Venise, vue superbe sur le canal. vous passerez dans de minuscules ruelles piétonnes pour y accéder.

An exceptional collection of modern art, housed within a splendid palazzo and garden, right on the canal. At various times during the day, free talks are given on the artwork.
I returned this January, when sadly, the art had been moved to a nearby building, as they were renovating the old one.
When my friend tried to buy a student ticket, which she is, she was asked her age, and informed that students could not be over 26. Felt this was an odd policy, as student discounts are for people who cannot work full time as they are studying, surely age is regardless. My friend was quite annoyed of being asked her age in such a manner. This coupled with the fact we were not informed of the renovation, and lesser amount of art on show, did detract from the experience.
However, I would say this is an absolute must when in Venice, renovations or not.

Diese Sammlung ist auch und gerade für Kunstneulinge ein Muss!

Wirklich eine schöné kleine, aber erlesene Sammlung der Millionärin (und Gattin Max Ernsts) Peggy Guggenheim. Süsser kleiner Garten mit schmucken Bronzefiguren. Im Inneren tolle Gemälde von Magritte, Ernst, Picasso, Kandinsky, de Chirico und vielen anderen modernen Klassikern. Ein ganzer Raum mit Bildern von Pollock, den die gute Peggy gross rausgebracht hat.
Die Cafeteria sollte man sich auch antun, schon deshalb, weil tolle Fotos der exzentrischen Sammlerin, sowie einiger Künstler dort hängen.
Der minimalistische unfertige Pallazzo sticht im Stadtbild echt ins Auge, gefällt aber dann irgendwie doch.

Für Liebhaber der Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts ist die Peggy Guggenheim Collection ein absolutes Mekka! Werke von Picasso bis Dalí, von Klee bis Kandinsky, van Ernst bis Chagall, alle sind mit tollen Kunstwerken vertreten.
Neben diesen privaten Sammlungsstücken, zu denen auch einige Bildhauerstücke zählen, erhält man va. einen sehr schönen Einblick in die ehemaligen Wohnräumlichkeiten von Peggy Guggenheim!
Sie lebte mit ihren Hunden im unvollendeten Palazzo Veneir dei Leoni. Sehr schön finde ich auch, dass die ehemalige Raumaufteilung bis heute noch sichtbar ist. So steht beispielsweise der Esstisch noch an seinem Platz!
Unvergleichlich ist auch die Lage des Museums direkt am Canale Grande. Die begehbare Terasse und ihr Blick auf die Paläste am Kanal ist ein Traum!

La fondation Peggy Guggenheim est une vraie merveille ! C’est une très belle collection d’oeuvres contemporaines. C’est une visite incontournable ! On peut entre autres voir des oeuvres de Picasso, René Magritte, Chagall, Kandinsky… Superbe tout simplement.

Schöné Sammlung, interessanter Ausblick, super Wohnung!

Je né suis pas du tout amateur d’art contemporain mais j’ai été plutôt dans l’ensemble séduit par cette collection. Mention spéciale à l’oeuvre de Magritte.

Ein wunderschönes Plätzchen in dieser überfüllten Stadt!
Auch hier ist es oft voll und es ist viel los, jedoch fühlt man sich hier angenehm ‘entschleunigt’!
Der schattige Innenhof mit seinen Skulpturen und dem Grab von Peggy und ihren geliebten ‘Babies’,
der Rundgang durchs Haus mit vielen Bildern, wie sie selbst hier damals inmitten der ganzen Kunstgegenstände lebte,
die sonnige Terrasse zum Canale Grande mit überwältigender Aussicht…
Ein Besuch lohnt sich auf jeden Fall!

Haut lieux culturel de Venise, la fondation Guggenheim abrite une magnifique collection d’art moderne.
Ici cubisme, surréalisme… se côtoient dans ce Palazzo pour notre plus grand plaisir !

Un musée pour tous !
Histoire de faire contraste après la visite d’une dizaine d’églises vénitiennes, nous avons pris la direction de ce musée qui est vraiment charmant. D’une dimension humaine et dans un cadre reposant et charmant (né pas rater la terrasse donnant sur le canal !) nous avons là une collection superbe et variée où même les néophytes comme moi y trouveront leur compte. Vraiment un bel endroit à part dans Venise !

Can be visited in one hour. All artworks within are modern (20^th century permanent collection and contemporary exhibits).
Small layout on human scale. Nice relief from the grandiose classic art museums that can overwhelm. (I love the Louvre, but it is exhausting to visit even when you pace yourself).
If you are into Jackson Pollack, Calder mobiles, Salvador Dali, Picasso, etc… This collection is a must-​see.

A highlight of our trip to Venice!
The muesum is small and intimate enough to keen those with shorter attention spans amused (I know, I’m one of them!).
The sculptures in the grounds were my favourite part, but there is also displayes of works by Pollock, Picasso and Dali to name but a few.

N’étant pas fan de musée ni amateur d’art je me suis laissé entrainer dans ce musée suite à l’insistance de mon amie.
Et bien je n’ai pas regretté de l’avoir suivie!
Vous trouverez dans cette collection de très grands noms comme Kandinsky, Picasso, Magritte ou encore Dali avec des tableaux trés trés beaux.
A l’extérieur se trouve un petit jardin avec quelques sculptures modernes ici et là.
Un endroit calme dans cette fourmilière qu’est Venise.

schönes museum– auch bei hochwasser und vielen umwegen endlich erreicht– wir waren begeistert.

I am not much of a museum fan, mostly because I have a short attention span and there is usually too much to see in one visit.
This museum differed in that it was once a private abode, so it had a lot of personal history alongside some beautiful works of art. Really made you think about Peggy and her life and her dogs (some of which are buried in the grounds).
A must see in Venice.

Although the museum is small by some standards one can only marvel at Peggy G’s private collection. Not only a collector with excellent taste she was also a generous patron to many up and coming artists.
From the couple of Picassos she kept hanging in the entrance hallway (as you do) to works by Dali, Klee, Pollock, Kandinsky and others each room reveals more and more works by artists that are now household names.
The surrounding area is also worth a visit in its own right as it is home to many small art shops. This part of Venice is a must see on even the shortest visit.

Schönes Museum. Als Studentin zahlt man nur 5 Euro Eintritt und die 7 Euro für die Audio-​Führung lohnen sich auch. Es gibt zuerst eine spannende Einführung zur Person Peggy Guggenheim und danach kann man bei vielen Bildern eine nähere Erklärung anhören. Man steht dann versunken vor den Bildern, lauscht der Stimme im Kopf und man merkt gar nicht wie schnell die Zeit vergeht.
PS: Nach dem Museumsbesuch hatten wir Hunger und leisteten uns eine Lasagne und einen Salat im Museumsrestaurant. Davon rate ich wirklich ab! Für die Lasagne, die man auf dem Teller kaum sah und wirklich widerlich schmeckte, zahlten wir 14 Euro. Also lieber eine kleine Kneipe um die Ecke besuchen. Ist viel billiger und erst noch gemütlicher.

Definitely worth a visit. Whether you are an art lover or not it is one of the highlights of Venice.

Entrance to the Guggenheim Museum was not included with the VeniceCard, but as we are intolerably cultured people we decided we simply had to go and have a look. Fortunately we convinced them we were students so paid only 5 euro each instead of 10.
It’s a lovely place really. Peggy Guggenheim lived here with her beloved dogs and beloved collection of modern art. It’s a great collection and has a wonderfully personal feel to it. The photographs of Peggy in the house with the art around her really made me wish they’d left the whole place as it had been when she lived there.
The finest bit by far is the sculpture out the front of the museum, the patio that looks out onto the Grand Canal. As you come out of the doors and down the steps you see a sculpture of a figure on a horse with his arms raised in a triumphant v and his head tilting back. Then as you come around to see the front of the piece you see he has a prominent erection sticking out. It’s a very funny thing, it made us laugh and it’s a perfect example of how art can be witty, humorous and life affirming. I loved it.

I loved it here. The gallery is actually Peggy Guggenheim’s former home, situated right on the Grand Canal, and houses PG’s own personal collection. There are pieces by Picasso, Pollock, Dali, Klee and Kadinsky (among many others — these were the ones I recognised most though), along with an outdoor sculpture garden. The building itself is worth a visit if you’re into your architecture — it’s called the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni and is an 18^th century palace.
Well worth a visit if you’re in Venice.

Mich beeindrucken in solchen Museen die ausgestellten Exponate eher weniger.
Picassos, Miros und Kandinskys hängen in Hundert anderen Ausstellungen ebenfalls rum.
Nein, nicht diese. Diese hängen nur hier.
Aber andere.
Was mich beeindruckt sind immer die Gebäude selbst.
Nie wollte ich bisher in einem Museum wohnen. Hier ist es anders.
Ich würde mein Haus, mein Auto und meine Rennpferde (oder wie heißt es in der Werbung ?) sofort für dieses Haus, und vor allen Dingen für diesen Garten tauschen.
Er ist nicht übermäßig groß, aber die Lage am glitzernden Canale Grande ist märchenhaft.
Schon beim letzten Besuch konnte ich mich vom Funkeln, und von Geplätscher der vorbeiziehenden Boote besoffen sehen und hören.

Eigentlich ist es ja eine Bauruine. Jemanden ist nämlich das Geld ausgegangen. Der Plan sah einen wunderschönen Palast vor, mit mehreren Stockwerken und Prunkfassade zum Canal Grande. Aber wie so häufig beim Bauen, man hatte sich verschätzt. Und so war nach dem ersten Stockwerk Schluss.
Der Witz ist, dass viel später, im 20. Jahrhundert plötzlich ein paar Designer und Architekten unsere Wahrnehmung von schöner Architektur verändert haben. Bauhaus nannte sich ihre Bewegung. Eine ihrer genialen Ideen war der Bungalow, ein Haus mit flachen Dach und meistens nur einer Etage. Und schon war die Bauruine in prominenter Lage gerettet. Denn sie sah plötzlich unglaublich modern aus. Und vielleicht quartierte sich deshalb Peggy ein, ein Mitglied der Familie Guggenheim, eine privat wohl recht schwierige Frau, die aber immer einen Hang zu modernen Künstlern hatte. Dort, in ihrem Palazzo in Venedig hat sie dann über dreißig Jahre verbracht, mit ihrer Kunst und ihren Künstlern.
Nein, es ist keinesfalls ein typisches Museum, was wir hier besichtigen können. In einem der Räume hängen sogar noch Photos aus der Zeit, in der der Palazzo als Wohnung genutzt wurde. Und mit nur ein bisschen Phantasie kann man das auch heute noch gut nachempfinden.
Als Museum ist das ganze eigentlich recht klein geraten. Eine Stunde dort zu verbringen, setzt schon viel Aufmerksamkeit für die Bilder voraus. Was dort hängt, sind allerdings für ihre Epoche wirklich wichtige Werke. Ein Best-​Off, wenn man etwas über die Surrealisten lernen will. Insbesondere über Max Ernst, der mit Peggy Guggenheim auch liiert gewesen ist. Ein Mann, dem Frauen aber wohl generell nicht widerstehen konnten.
Schön ist übrigens auch der Garten hinter dem Museum, auch er ist recht klein, auch er ist mit spannender Kunst gesegnet. Ein wunderbarer Ruheplatz wenn die Füße nicht mehr können. Ein besonderes Erlebnis hat auch, wenn zu einer Gala im Museum eingeladen ist. Dann wird nämlich oft das Dach des Palazzos verwendet, dort werden Tische aufgebaut, so dass man unter freiem Himmel mit Blick auf den Kanal speisen kann. Ein wunderbarer Anblick, gelegentlich auch mit den wunderbaren Farben eines venezianischen Sonnenuntergangs verbunden. Einfach traumhaft.

Der Palazzo Venier dei Leoni ist wohl eines der schönsten Museumsgebäude in Europa und in der Welt, zumindest ist die Lage des Prunkgebäudes direkt am türkis leuchtenden Canale Grande nicht zu überbieten — und man kann sich sehr gut vorstellen, wie die reichen Kunstmäzenin Peggy Guggenheim hier die letzten 30 Jahre ihres Lebens (1949 – 1979) verbrachte und abwechselnd den Blick, das Licht, die Architektur und den lieblichen Garten an der Rückseite genoß. Und das mitten im Labyrinth von Venedig, am Dorsoduro.
Die Dame hatte ein wunderbares Leben, das anscheinend vollständig dem Kunstgenuß gewidmet war. Sie war eine Zeit mit Max Ernst verheiratet und mit Pollock befreundet, den sie erheblich förderte.
Nur ein Teil ihrer beträchtlichen Kollektion wurde mit dem Palast der Stadt Venedig vermacht — dennoch ist es wohl die bedeutendste Sammlung moderner Kunst des beginnenden 20. Jahrhunderts in Italien.
In den vom flirrenden im Kanal reflektierten Licht durchströmten Räumen hängen dann auch strahlende Meisterwerke von Picasso, Kandinsky, De Chirico, Miro, Pollock und vielen anderen Großen — wobei mindere Qualitäten nicht vorkommt, man begnügte sich nur mit der ersten Wahl…
Ein wunderbarer Ort, den man als Kunstliebhaber in keinem Fall versäumen sollte — und eines der wenigen Museen, die man besonders gut bei Sonnenschein besuchen kann — dieses Kanal-​Licht ist einfach überirdisch schön!
P. S.: Weil Venedig als Gesamtes zum UNESCO-​Weltkulturerbe erklärt wurde, wird dieser Beitrag vorerst stellvertretend für die Stadt in die entsprechende QYPE-​Liste übernommen.

Très bel écrin à l’art moderne
Le palais abritant la collection Guggenheim est un pavillon discret et plein de charme au détour de quelques ruelles qui donnent sur le grand canal. On y trouve une sélection exhaustive d’oeuvres de maîtres tels: Dali, Tanguy, Kandinsky, Miro, Calder, Leger, entres autres et Max Ernst compagnon de Peggy à une certaine époque. Les pièces sont meublés avec le mobilier de cette dernière et retranscrivent une ambiance personnelle et comparative dans l’évolution des artistes contemporains internationnaux. A né pas rater.

Inoubliable
Je l’ai visité, il y a 23 ans avec elle, je l’ai revu récemment avec elle et nos enfants. Quel bonheur, quelles merveilles. Bacon, Calder, Picasso, Dali, Miro, Giacometti, Brancusi, Braque, Magritte, Ernst, Chagall et les autres et Peggy. Merci, merci, merci et mille fois merci !

Sacrée Peggy
C’est le premier musée d’art moderne que je visite. J’ai orienté ma visite vers les toiles des maîtres les plus célèbres (Kandinski, Dali, Léger,…). A chacun d’apprécier. En plus des oeuvres, il y a le cadre, avec ce palais qui donne sur le grand canal et aussi l’histoire de Peggy Gugenheim. L’audio guide est bien fait. D’un point de vue pratique, ce musée est à deux pas de celui de l’académie et il est bien indiqué.

Autre siècle
La collection Guggenheim vous emmèné dans un autre siècle avec Picasson, Magritte, Braque… Une collection impressionnante. C’est intéressant de comprer l’art du XX°s à celui de la Renaissance non?

Drôle de surprise
Je n’aimais pas spécialement l’art contemporain, moderne et tout et tout. J’ai agit en curieuse quand j’ai décidé que cette année j’allais enfin me décider à aller voir ce musée. (c’était la 4ème fois concécutive que je venais en vacances à Venise). J’arrive donc et commence la visite. On rentre dans le jardin où est exposé les statues, certaines avaient leur charme. J’accrochais pour certaines d’autres me laissant indifférentes. Mais quand je suis arrivée dans le pavillon qui contient les peintures, je suis restée «baba» d’admiration, et là par contre j’ai sacrément accrochée, je dirais même qu’on a mis plusieurs heures avant de m’extirper de ce musée. La terrasse également est superbe on a une vue du grand canal superbe. Vraiment même si vous n’êtes pas accros du tout à l’art contemporain allez-​y c’est vraiment féerique, ça vaut le détour.

Une superbe collection
