I came here because I wanted to have 川床料理 (kawadoko cuisine) in Kyoto, which is eating traditional kaiseki by the river. To be honest this wasn’t our first choice — we tried making reservations at other places and walked along the street before we were able to find this place that had open tables on a Monday evening. But we were happy with this place.
We ordered the most expensive set course meal, which was about ¥10,000 per person. Every dish was intricately designed and artistic. I loved the tamago tofu in the kimo sui and the beef that you cook on the stone was fun and interactive. Sashimi was also excellent. My husband’s favorite was the dessert.
We were able to sit outside by the river and enjoy the view, but it was still a bit too hot for us. Kyoto is very hot in the summer and eating by the river is supposed to be cooler, but I guess if it’s over 95 degrees, being a few degrees cooler by the river is still hot. Also, we were in actual seats — some foreigners might not like sitting on a zabuton or the floor, so this was nice.
I’m not a fan of huge portions and can’t eat a ton, so this was perfect for me. If you are a voracious eater, this meal might be slightly under your normal portion size.
The service was good. The servers all had microphones that they used to communicate with each other. They were polite and explained every dish. I had to translate everything for my husband and couldn’t find all of the exact words, but most of it was straightforward.
I might try other kawadoko places next time, but this one isn’t bad if you’re looking for a course meal to sit by the river!
