Traveled to Kuala Lumpur last month on ANA. ANA had just resumed flights between Tokyo and Kuala Lumpur a few days before. Although I was hesitant to travel to Malaysia in September given the weather during this time of the year, I decided to book this trip given the introductory fares they were offering.
This route flies daily using a Boeing 787 (Dreamliner). Flight times are timed for easy connections to US flights. So the flight to KL leaves in the late afternoon arriving in KL just before midnight. The return flight to Narita leaves in the early morning and arrives in the early afternoon in time to connect with the late afternoon flights to North America.
The gate for the flight at Narita Airport to KL was in an interesting location. It was located in a basement like gate area that I had no idea even existed. I think this is where they assign the flights to SE Asia to depart from. The plane for the flight was not at the gate. Instead, a shuttle bus takes passengers to the plane parked elsewhere at the airport. I think this is because they quarantined the plane to prevent the spread of diseases like dengue fever.
The flight to KL is over 7 hours long. I am not a fan of the Dreamliner since the legroom and seat comfort in economy isn’t great. Fortunately the plane was not very full so the middle seat in my row was empty so I could stretch a little in my seat.
The in-​flight service to KL was as good as any other flight that I have taken on ANA. There were some differences on the flight for this route that I noticed. For the snack service for this flight, ANA offers halal rice crackers. I think the meal service is halal too. I had a delicious Japanese yellowtail tuna meal on this flight. During my trip to KL, I found halal food to be widely offered, so I think this is a good move by ANA in considering the dining needs of their customers.
The other thing that I noticed on this route is that the flight crew sprays the cabins with an insect repellent aerosol during the flight. So if you see the flight attendants coming through, make sure to cover your mouth and face to avoid inhaling the spray.
I enjoyed the flight to KL overall. Though by the time I arrived in KL, I was exhausted having traveled 20 hours and over 8000 miles from Seattle. The flight also arrives late at night at KLIA limiting your transportation options. The KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit trains from KLIA to KL Sentral stop running at 1 am so you might have time to catch one of the last trains. Otherwise taking a taxi is your only option. Know that there is a 50% surcharge tacked on taxi rides after midnight in KL.
I didn’t take the return trip back to Narita from KLIA, but I think the flight time is a bit early. You need to get up early in the morning to get to the airport. Since it leaves early in the morning, a taxi ride may be your only option. Still, I am glad that ANA has resumed flights to KL as it will make it easier for travelers from the US to get to Malaysia.
