Soon Hock

Away from the main road and highway, this old school tze char place is really for those who either grew up in the area or are told about it. You will never find it as a tourist as it is outside of KL city center.
It is well known for its steam fish which is pretty good. I love this crunchy crispy fried kailan and the tofu. The wild boar curry is also not bad as it does not have a gamey taste or smell to it.
Parking is limited, just outside the restaurant or across it (only has space for 4 – 5 vehicles).

I have been having meals here often, and the owner is always constantly experimenting and creating new dishes. Generally, most of the food are delicious, but it is good to always ask him if there’s anything new and special.
Parking can be a challenge as the restaurant is in a sense, in the corner of a small town. Always crowded on the weekends, so come early.

I was visiting my grandmother recently and she said she was craving for some chinese, and being not so familiar with the place, I started asking around. I was recommended Soon Hock, which was just down the road (behind Sierramas). Let me start off with the accesibility problem here, sure, you don’t often get disabled customers, but isn’t it much more considerate to have an access for them? I struggled getting my car into position for my grandmother to get up the super steep entrance.
Anyways, enough with that, lets get down with the food here. I ordered quite a few dishes and only one truly stood out. The rest were only mediocre and did not get me going for more. The best dish was their Signature Steamed Fish (type of fish is your choice). I really loved places that have their own style of making a dish, something you can’t get in other places. The fish was steamed in a home made broth, which contains other ingredients like beancurd and mushrooms. The taste stood out really well, with a sweet & spicy hint.
Other dishes like the Lemon Chicken and Sweet & Sour Pork weren’t really up to the standard. The Special Tofu on the other hand, was not bad. I don’t know the exact name for this dish, but I just pointed out to the english wording on the menu «Special Tofu». The dish that was most disappointing was the Salted Egg Prawns. The portion was small, the prawns itself wasn’t fresh, and I could barely taste any salted egg, it was just plain ol fried prawns to me.
