There are many lackluster pizza joints in Mexico but this one is very special. There was literally a queue outside the door. It’s run by an Italian couple who clearly have a passion for what they do. The wife, I presume, being the gracious and boisterous waitress and the husband cooking up a storm in the kitchen and popping his head around the corner every now and again to see of the patrons are enjoying his food. They do the best they can with the limited ingredients available in Mexico. No fresh basil on the Caprese Salad but dried basil. But it’s still great. Didn’t have the pasta but it looked fantastic and certainly freshly«home made». Pizzas were thin based and really tasty. If you have to eat Italian in Mexico then this is the place to do it. I did notice that the place was closed on the first night we went looking… not sure what their opening times really are but persevere. It’s worth it.

Solid offerings in the pizza department. Family of five ate here twice while in town. I enjoyed the pasta selections as well. A nice break from the standard Yucatan fare.

We had been travelling though Yucatan and Campeche were desperate for something other than Yucatecan food. We found this Italian restaurant and had to give it a try. We came by on a Sunday night and the place was packed with a line out the door(a good sign). It was still early so we went around the corner to a bar and hoped that it would clear out after we had a few drinks. An hour or so later, we went back and it was still crowded but we were able to get the last available table. The owner /hostess quickly brought us menus and took our orders. We shared a yummy caprese salad, had some decent red wine, and a thin crust pepperoni pizza The bathrooms are accessed by walking though their spotless, squeaky clean kitchen. Definitely a good place for authentic pizza or Italian food in Bacalar

Honestly, I wasn’t hoping for pizza when we stopped in for dinner at Pizza Bertilla. However, the city of Chetumal seems to have surprisingly few dining options available, particularly in town and away from the water. So, if you find yourself in Chetumal, and you are hungry, prepare yourself; you might be eating pizza pretty soon. With that said I really enjoyed the atmosphere at Bertilla. The place felt authentic, and the seating was all arranged in a patio setup just off the main square. It was a little loud, because the arcade next door produced all sorts of gaming noises, constantly. Plus, a matronly server(perhaps the owner?) was often singing over the arcade noise. Yet, in the end all of this felt quaint and again added to the place’s authenticity. I can’t say that I found the best pizza ever, in a tiny city, almost off the map, but it was pretty good. I personally, would have like for the cheese to be saltier, but that is my only complaint. The ingredients were fresh, and they made the pizza to order. They also made available fresh ground red pepper, oregano, seasoned olive oil, and a habanero hot sauce to top the pizza with. In the end, I didn’t want pizza, and yet if I had to go back, I wouldn’t be unhappy.
